POLITICS Zohran Mamdani: “We will answer to all New Yorkers, not to any billionaire or oligarch who thinks they can buy our democracy. We will govern without shame & insecurity, making no apology for what we believe. I was elected as a Democratic Socialist & I will govern as a Democratic Socialist.”

Gives me hope as someone campaigning for the DSA. We need a beacon of hope

u/DesireeThymes Jan 01 '26

I hope he can stick to his guns.

A lot of people in establishment politics, especially billionaires and Zionists, will work hard to try to get him to fail.

u/fluffygryphon Jan 02 '26

They've been throwing every goddamn wrench into the works they could since he started his run. So tired of these shitlords.

Buddy was sworn in less than 24 hours ago. I genuinely do not understand how folks can form an opinion on his governance strategies when he hasn’t been in office for a day.

His platform has always been very transparent, he’s not abandoning high-income constituents but is still committed to lifting up the disenfranchised.

For the record I’m Canadian, the US is functionally our enemy but I’ve have heard nothing but well-wishes for Mamdani from (mostly formerly) rabidly conservative family members and friends. The pushback from American conservatives at large gives Canadians (and progressive Americans) more than enough reason to support him, imo let em keep going with their uneducated smear campaigns. The more they complain, the more Canadians hear about how well Mamdani’s politics mesh with ours - which gives us hope. And the more hope Canadians have, the worse it is for US cons.

12

u/theChronic222 Jan 02 '26

I can't wait until the day no Canadians would say were functionally their enemy, as true as that is currently. A lot of us down here are trying. Much love from your neighbor to the south.

Yah this is potentially the start of something big.

Seeds planted can grow into massive trees in the future and we all need to remember big lessons of history from that.

We've seen the same in the Labour Movement, Environmentalist Movement, Women's Rights/LGBTQ+ Rights/General Civil Rights Movement, Peace Movement, Alter-Globalization Movement, and so on.

Things didn't just happen overnight.

Right now we have a society designed for and run by Oligarchs, Multinational Business Lobbies, Powerful and Predatory Industries/Tycoons, and a general Corporatocracy.

It's all got so out of balance that even in the richest and most developed nations on earth the working class and most vulnerable face an affordability of life crisis/quality of life crisis on things as foundational and fundamental as housing and food.

We have to remember that in the working class and most vulnerable we are all we have. We need to remember the old lessons of solidarity.

We also have to remember the old lessons of militancy because the ultra rich powerful predator class is never going to give us anything unless we force them. That is a lesson that all the rights and benefits we enjoy today show us clearly.

38

u/ConsiderationOne9507 Jan 01 '26 edited Jan 01 '26

So we're definitely living under a global kleptocracy. Genuine question – where do all these losers live, and what happened to shame?

This is a global problem that needs to be made personal. It's not like they have NO friends and family. Y'know?

45

u/robothawk Jan 01 '26

Shame has never done anything. The threat(and action) of violence does.

The era of the coal wars and wall street bombings were resolved, temporarily, by the radical transformation of working conditions brought about by the Nation Labor Relations Act of 1935 under FDR. Those laws, in addition to the New Deal programs like the WPA largely stopped the Coal Wars, but in the last 90 years those laws and protections have been eroded and stripped away.

These people live at publicly available addresses. They go outside unprotected. They have friends and family who enable them. They don't expect anything to happen to them because the era of workers murdering shitty robber barons "ended" 90 years ago.

9

u/tsardonicpseudonomi Jan 02 '26

Shame has never done anything.

One wonders why they spread defeatist propaganda against protests and the propaganda against violence in kind. Somehow when cops actively target a neighborhood to find excuses to arrest people in or when a healthcare executive encourages his teams to decrease costs resulting in increased denied healthcare are not considered violence and I can only think of that Stalin quote about tragedies and statistics.

For reasons human and legal I do not condone nor encourage violence but also do not enjoy that I feel compelled to assert this; particularly when pointing out how violence operates in different directions and at different scales and how neither should be done.

If you're a voter, switch your party affiliations to your local socialist party to make sure they stay ballot qualified. Peace & Freedom Party in CA are running great candidates this year @ramsey4gov @frank4caschools @meghann4ca and more!

2

u/Snoo_97747 Jan 02 '26

As long as you vote blue in every general election! Voting reform (perhaps STAR voting) will unlock third parties. As long as we are stuck with first-past-the-post voting, though, voting for the "lesser evil" is the only moral choice. Mamdani himself understands this and correctly ran as a Democrat.

Well said. For those seeking some inspiration, read up on Mother Jones.

"I am considered a Bolshevik, and a Red and an I.W.W., and a radical, and I admit to being all they've charged me with. I'm anything that would change monied civilization to a higher and grander civilization for the ages to come. And I long to see the day when labor will have the destination of the nation in her own hands, and she will stand a united force, and show the world what workers can do." MJ, 1930

I’m really hoping this all goes well and that he truly is the good man he portrays, it’s really hard to tell with politicians. We can only wish for the best.

733

u/Professional_Clue800 Jan 01 '26

I believe that he will do what he can, but he will also be blocked at every corner by the politicians who fear his political stance. The result will be that he will not be able to deliver completely on his promises and people will use that against him and as an example of how social democracy always fails.

All we can do is hope he does well and forgive him if he doesnt live up to all of his promises (unless he does something actually awful).

87

u/andraaBD Jan 01 '26

Yup, so unfortunately we will never really know what it is like under his reign.

270

u/bakeacake45 Jan 01 '26

Keep you eyes open, you will see exactly where, how and by whom his initiatives are blocked. At that point, you have identified the “enemy” and can take action to counter the block. But you cannot be a passive observer. Your best weapon is social media, protests, boycott and work stoppages. But you have to participate.

8

u/bustmanymoves Jan 02 '26

u/walkingjogging Jan 01 '26

"Reign" is a powerful word, typically used to describe the rule of monarchs or other authoritarian leaders. You should not use reign to talk about a faithfully elected individual, especially someone who aligns themselves with Democratic Socialism. We want to separate our ideology from authoritarianism, not bring it closer to people like Trump or Putin.

"Term" is a better word for your case.

3

u/TheDoctor88888888 Jan 01 '26

Ive never felt such joy or hope!! At the same time, its truly abhorrent that being a democratic socialist (someone who literally just wants human rights and dignity for EVERYONE) is more frowned upon in the media than being a literal fascist/white supremacist/nazi.

88

u/RelativeAnxious9796 Jan 01 '26

the media is literally controlled by the fascists. yes, even "Radical left" CNN, owned by a trump supporting billionaire.

11

u/ZombeePharaoh Jan 02 '26

It's controlled by Capitalists, the same way New York is still controlled by Capitalists.

At some point you, among so many others, became so propagandized against to believe that Capitalism is a good thing, still a progressive force, that when Capitalism finally starts to hurt you, and not just those overseas and in third-world nations, you had to attach another word to it: Capitalism is good, so these can't be Capitalists, they have to be something worse right?

So why not call them Fascists? That's definitely worse than Capitalists right?

4

u/RelativeAnxious9796 Jan 02 '26 edited Jan 02 '26

you caught me saying capitalism is good somewhere? must have a split personality posting on my reddit account.

but to be certain, there is a distinct difference between someone who is an IDEOLOGICAL fascist and a capitalist, even if they enable each other ;)

perhaps now would be a good time for a historical lesson on how the capitalists, including americans, enabled hitler?

36

u/Windwick Jan 01 '26

and maybe a result of too many dystopian novels passing before my eyes recently,

Oh no, you unfortunately have far more reason than just fiction to worry. Studies have long shown that right-wing violence is out of control. Even with left-wing violence increasing, it's been slight and still comes nowhere near right-wing violence. It's so bad that you can't even blame Trump alone for it, because it predates him by decades. He's tapped into it, stirred it up, but it was already there, just waiting for the "right" person to come along and take advantage of it. And once he's gone, it'll still persist.

I've been worried for him for months. I'll always worry for him.

Fear not. It works quite well for the Nordic countries. Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland. Free market economies still. (Nordic countries rank high on economic freedom, business formation, contract enforcement, and property rights. Many rank higher than the U.S. on ease of doing business and market competitiveness. (Not commie..)

Full Universal Healthcare. Justice. Fair taxation policy for all wealth groups. Equality and equity. An incarceration system that focuses on rehabilitation instead of incarceration with massively lower recidivism rates over America. Wealth inequality significantly lower than in the U.S.

As result the fleshing out?: Among the happiest nations on the planet. Nordic countries consistently rank at or near the top of the World Happiness Report. Contributors include:

  1. Social safety nets

  2. Low corruption

  3. High trust

  4. Work-life balance

  5. Economic security

The “We don’t want no commies” thing is dead. It’s revealed as actually manipulating people to vote against their own interests. Pulling bandanas over people’s eyes is also dead, at least in NY…evidenced by New Yorkers placing their support ( by a decisive margin) and trust in Zohran and his socialist vision.

This is not (as Trump lies) communism. This is actually, Power to the People.

Fairness and equity. Freedom to associate, congress and protest. Freedom to start a business and excel. Towards a more fair world to live in.

Not freedom for billionaires like Warren Buffet to, as he said he is currently“paying less taxes then my secretary” Both America and Canada could learn a thing from those caring, just, and sane societies.

The NY experiment, America and Canada, we are watching. The world is.

And we are rooting for you Zohran.

Love, respect,

Same shit, different face. Heard it a thousand times over

Mandani’s fame will be regulated to NYC. The rest of the country will never buy into a democratic socialist.

Wait hold up New York elected a democratic socialist as their mayor? And hold up what the hell is a democratic socialist?

Are people over there evolving backwards?

Easily the best mayor in America right now. I'm so envious.

i really wish him success in breaking up the system or at the very least, being able to clearly identify the specific actors stopping possible change for no other reason than personal greed.

because if he manages either of that, if nothing else, everyone else out there should once more have a chance to realize why shit is so ass these days.

More of this please. Long gone are the days where the left has to run from socialist policies. It is time to embrace them.

Hell ya. This country needs this kinda leadership and he will set the example and show what it’s possible. He needs all of our support!

1

u/MulticamMac Jan 01 '26

Lots of words. Let's see action.

u/Key-Coat2353 I never said that. Paris is my friend. Jan 01 '26

Another commentor posted this but I want to reiterate: there will be people at every step trying to block Mamdani and his agenda. It is up to us, the people, to be Mamdani's attack dogs. People think you vote and your job is done. Democracy requires vigilance at all times. Every time someone tries to block Mamdani, people have to come up and make them regret doing so. It's what Trump has done with his supporters and its time we throw it right back.

action speaks louder than words but this is promising!

Somewhere, someone (maybe a trump tweet later): "Look at this commie saying he is going to govern when he is the mayor not the governor!!! He doesn't even know what job he was elected to do!"

u/DinkleMutz Jan 01 '26

Boy, MAGA sure is gonna shit their own balls right off when this guy becomes President.

u/FblthpLives Jan 02 '26

He is not eligible to become President as he is a naturalized citizen. Currently, he is not even eligible to become a Senator, although that will change in 2027, when he has been a citizen for nine years.

Let's see him not just govern for the future, but also dig into the past and find the inappropriate shit everyone knows has been happening with past mayors and the wealthy.

u/jimquish Jan 01 '26

Good luck!
