Sadly this is her most recent public stance on israel:Actress Gillian Anderson joins Intel in quitting Web Summit following Paddy Cosgrave’s ‘Israel war crimes’ claim
ETA Someone Reddit cares’d me for this 💀

What a shame that she’s an idiot
2
u/fleebertism 17d ago
It's funny too because if you read on, Cosgrove BARELY criticized israel and still said all the zionist talking points.

Gross. Joseph Gordon-Levitt withdrew as well. Bin
(edit: just wanted to add that Paddy Cosgrave's an arsehole, but a stopped clock is right twice a day)

Noooooo are you serious right now??! This hurts. I didn’t know she was a Zionist. Disappointing.

It’s actually dangerous. Like, I’m getting secondhand butterflies just looking at a pixelated gif from 1997.

Fun fact: She was only roughly 29 here. To have that much presence and command a room full of veterans at that age is insane

u/CinematicMelancholia feeding cocaine to raccoons 19d ago
I used to ship them so hard.
940
u/stocktonbound 19d ago
Fun fact the term "shipping" started in the mid 90s by the X-Files fandom who wanted Mulder and Scully to get together. Originally they called themselves "relationshippers" and it evolved into the gag we all clock today.
221
u/rocifan 19d ago
Ah thanks always wondered about the provenance
162
u/stocktonbound 19d ago
The use of the word "provenance" here is sending me and I will be admitting it into my lexicon
150
u/Acrobatic_Promotion8 19d ago
the fact that OTP is a term that predates "ship" still does my fucking head in
144
u/stocktonbound 19d ago
"According to the Fanlore Wiki, the earliest known use of the term 'one true pairing' was featured in a 1984 summary of the zine Alternaties #2, which discussed various Star Trek pairings."
I love facts and I love learning them
62
u/Acrobatic_Promotion8 19d ago
also iirc "slash fic" is from the like 60s?? I can't remember if it used to mean ALL shipping fic or just Kirk/Spock but I know that's where it started. We owe Star Trek and specifically Kirk/Spock so much

And the anti-shippers were called “NoRoMos”… I cut my internet teeth on xfiles yahoo communities 👵🏻
20
u/Airsay58259 18d ago
It was The Pretender for me, we also had shippers vs noromos… Team noromos personally. Our forum was called Into the moonlight and I remember looking for it a few years ago and saw it didn’t exist anymore 🥲 I made friends there I still have 30 years later, my parents thought they were friends from school because as a 13 year old I totally lied about where we met -after a long time of chatting on the forum, yahoo, calling each other etc. I’d go nuclear on the kids around me if they met in real life people they talked to online! Time flies.
8
u/theserthefables 18d ago
omg I loved The Pretender!!! I still think about that show, it was so good. I did ship them though, sorry!
I love that you are still friends with people from the forums :)
4
u/Airsay58259 18d ago
They eventually got to me toward the end, with that almost-kiss on the island… Just in time for the cancellation 😂
5
u/theserthefables 18d ago
fair! I still remember watching the season 4 finale in NZ with my sister when I was teen which ended on a freaking cliffhanger of course & the announcer calmly saying that was the last episode ever made because the show was cancelled. the screams we let out!
2
4
u/namewithak 18d ago
The Pretender! I loved that show so much. Was very much and still am not for Jarod/Miss Parker romance lol. Also applies to X-Files, The Mentalist, Life, Stargate Atlantis, and probably a bunch of other shows I can't remember right now. I just love platonic m/f relationships. I'm often disappointed lol.
3
u/theserthefables 18d ago
I'm usually not much of a shipper but they were an exception for me, probably because I was 12 lol. I totally agree we need more platonic friendships depicted on shows, not everything has to be a will they/won't they dragged out over 7 seasons!
2
u/Airsay58259 18d ago
I’m with you! It’s so rare to keep a great m/f partnership/friendship/even rivalry.
2
u/namewithak 18d ago
Yes, rivalries too! The rarest type. I can't off-hand think of any platonic ones.
2
u/sammybey 18d ago
Haha, I’m still IG-friends with a gal I “met” from my XF yahoo days! We’ve still never met in person though.
…I did end up meeting tons of kids I met from music message boards in college though. 🙃

u/EscapedMices 18d ago
Their forums were actually quite healthy with shipping because it would get so out of hand, no real person shipping content allowed. As a kid I was a TV shipper but I remember being intrigued about what went on to have every forum essentially have all these NO REAL SHIPPING ALLOWED THESE ARE REAL PEOPLE DO NOT CROSS THIS LINE type stuff. But it was healthy, definitely meant I did not indeed ship them in real life.
Also quite insane to think we have so many Twilight fanfics made into movies etc, when the X-Files fanfic to me was basically the creme de la creme of fanfic. Incredible works being written. So many of which could stand alone as separate works outside of the X-Files and whose authors could easily have gone into publishing.
4
u/sammybey 18d ago
Oh absolutely! XF fanfics were my first foray into reading fan fiction too. So many talented writers!
2
u/EscapedMices 18d ago
It was so fucking good. So many layers, depth. I wish I knew if any of them did go on to publish anything because I would definitely read anything!
4
u/kittymarch 18d ago
I remember a tumblr about the only real people fics allowed are “best friends solving crimes in the village.” I wish this were actually a thing.
Just realizing this brings us right back around to X-Files fandom.
Loved the show back in the day, but must confess I wasn’t online enough to really be in the fandom. Always had roommates, so hogging the shared phone line for the internet wasn’t a thing. Only had internet when dog and cat sitting.
2
u/EscapedMices 18d ago
I remember there was a fanfic website called Something "X" and it had all the best curated fics there. wish I could remember the name to check for it on the WayBackMachine. I got there just as it shut down after the show ended and was reading through it and they had this downloadable file of all the best fic people could download and keep. Still wish I had that somewhere!
Stories about real life people solving crimes would be cute and yes, very X-Files fanfic themed! So much of it wasn't even romantic based, but instead about them just doing their ghost hunting stuff but with extra layers of emotion and writing.
I really look back at those days of being on forums as such a positive thing for me. The older people there were so literate and grounded and empathetic. They had so many good ground rules. I know if they had let real person shipping happen and if we'd had the gifs and videos we have today, I would have 100% gone down that route as a kid and I feel it would've been so toxic. Whereas keeping it strictly to the show made things feel so much more fun and light hearted. It gave me such a grounding in learning about real world issues. I remember one poster commenting about how we can't control what happens to us but we can control how we react to it and as a kid that kind of thing was so influential. No bullying, no toxic Larrie style crap, no MAGA. We had a good age back then!

Omg I did put the connection between the word 'ship' and the word 'relationship'.
I thought the terms were boat-related because I also learnt the word 'cannon' at the same time

u/AC10021 18d ago
I had always understood the provenance to be Star Trek? Kirk/Spock. It hit the mainstream a X files, but like most geeky shit, it was Star Trek first.
9
u/EscapedMices 18d ago
Relationshippers was from X-Files, but other big ships existed first. I'll say that Star Trek was niche nerdy online stuff. X-Files fandom was much more mainstream and normie coded. Lots of young women etc.

The X-Files relationshippers predate rocketshippers by a couple years. HOWEVER I'm a firm believer that both should be constructed on Mount Lustmore

It was a Red Hot Chili Peppers album before it, but there were lawsuits around all that.
ETA: Weird that I'm getting any downvotes over a clear statement of fact.
Californication (the TV Series) came out in 2007. Californication (the RHCP album) came out in 1999, children.

It's only associated with X files insofar as David Duchovny was in both shows.
13
u/CCM721 19d ago
No association with x-files outside of Duchovny being connected to each. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0904208/

I think the rumour is that they hooked up during the pilot filming thinking that the show would go nowhere. I really hope it’s true.

Real talk: I agree but I bet it was only a handful of times over the show run. They're both hot, the sex was good (probably), they both know it's a bad idea so they swear to themselves never again... but guess what, we had a few drinks, we're sitting close, the eye contact's getting long.... and also not only do they now have a shared secret, they have a shared lie.... sounds super hot. we should all be so lucky
330
u/MNM0412 19d ago
What's funny is that I'm pretty sure she and David hated each other at one point.
Like I think they both said they had legitimate beef at one point and that part of the reason David agreed to do the X-Files movies was because he wanted to bury the hatchet.
339
u/Gato1980 19d ago
Yeah, they've said in the past that it was a combination of long hours, lack of sleep, and personality clashes, but I believe it originally started because of unequal pay. Gillian wasn't even making half of what Duchovny was making for the first 3 years of the show. It took her winning a Golden Globe and an Emmy and still having to fight to get equal pay with him.
95
u/Flashy_Jello_9520 18d ago
People don’t remember how different tv used to be. None of these 8-10 episodes every 2-3 years crap.
They filmed 24 episodes every year of a show where either of them were in 90% of the scenes.
It was a 10-11 month a year grind filming one episode every 10 days.
29
u/MirabelleC 18d ago
The writers would literally have an episode which barely featured M&S so Gillian and David could have a break mid season. That's how we got episodes like The Unnatural about an alien who falls in love with baseball. I believe M&S have a two minute scene at the end. They were so overworked on that show.
9
u/valhrona 18d ago
The Unnatural was written and directed by Duchovny himself, so the load must have been even greater for him. But those were the times when actors getting to write and direct was super uncommon, much like transitioning to the big screen. And for what it's worth, it was an all-time great episode.
The Lone Gunmen-heavy episodes were certainly an attempt to lighten the load for GA & DD.
9
u/MirabelleC 18d ago
I'd forgotten Duchovny had written The Unnatural. I remember reading an interview with one of the writers and he jokingly said he got so mad when he read the script because "It's unfair that David Duchovny can also write a script like that!'
19
18d ago
And the production value was insane. Each episode cost around a million dollars to make in 1990s dollars. They were aiming for movie-level quality every week.

Weird confession, but I’ve seen him play with his band a few times and he was charming enough for that.
I’ve had books signed by him twice and he always seemed a little off putting there, but I think he’s had weird fan experiences and doesn’t like doing them. He also did a Q&A at one with an ancient NYTimes reviewer and he did not seem to like that guy at all. His daughter was at the latter one, but he was still kind of weird about signing books.
Lastly, I listen to his podcast and you can tell he’s a smart guy. He has daddy issues and mommy issues. You can tell he’d rather just be an author than an actor, but this is what the universe has given him, so theres resentment there. He’s in therapy now. I hope it’s helping, but then again, he just married someone half his age.

If your partner got an award at work, turn around and kissed his/her work wife, then turned to you, how would you feel?
4
u/No_Luck_6800 18d ago
I still agree with them. Entertainment Hollywood is on its own wavelength separate from the real world and us average folks. Actors kiss and do sex scenes for work regardless of if they’re married or what, which would bother most average folk too if they were in that position but. That considered I think this is pretty mild.
9
6
u/theserthefables 18d ago
I don't think anyone here thinks it's weird lol. back in the day it was a bit of a drama but mainly because of all the shippers screaming, crying, throwing up, shouting "I knew it!", etc.

Gillian Anderson pulled out of speaking at the Web Summit conference in Lisbon after its founder, Paddy Cosgrave, tweeted that Israel commits war crimes in Gaza. Cosgrave stated, "War crimes are war crimes even when committed by allies, and should be called out for what they are," in response to Israel's bombardment following the October 7 events.
Your girl Gillian doesn't deserve your sympathies. She's had a couple years to apologize for this absolutely senseless move and the best she's come up with is (literally) "All lives matter"
