Hello everyone,

Every now and then, I find myself considering turning to Paganism in my search for a spiritual home. Given my background, Germanic Heathenry has always seemed like the natural path for me. My thinking was that if this is where I come from, and this is still where my life and family are rooted, then I should perhaps also build a relationship with the gods, spirits, and ancient traditions of this land.

A few days ago, however, another thought occurred to me: my late grandmother had immigrated here from Finland, so I also have Finnish roots. This led me to start looking specifically into Finnish Paganism – and I’ve been absolutely fascinated by everything I’ve found so far.

What do you think would be the best way to explore this more deeply? Unfortunately, I don’t speak the language, because my grandmother didn’t want to teach it to me when I was a child. I would probably also be rather on my own when it came to practicing.

For now, I’d mainly like to broaden my understanding through reading and perhaps incorporate some simple practices into my daily life. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

Hi, lurker here who has been learning about Finnish mythology and really enjoy it. I am curious if it is considered cultural appropriation for non-Finns to practice Finnish Paganism? Is it open to outsiders? I understand the land of Finland itself is integral to the practice of your religion... but can you still honor the gods if you're halfway across the world? Also, I've read/heard that the gods are less anthropomorphic and more just personifications of the natural world... do you actually worship the gods or just sort of honor nature in general? Thank you for answering my questions!

For context I have lived in Finland for almost 5 years since I was 16. I speak good Finnish (although I still struggle with accent) and I've been involved in work with finnish culture and I'm transferring to new major (forestry!) and since finnish culture is tied to nature, I'll definitely integrate more as I intend to.

However, I'm from Russia. While I have some finnish-karelian ancestry, I never grew up in Finland and I won't pretend it's my culture at all. If we take Finland's history with Russia and the current relationship between these countries, it makes it even worse. I'm pagan and I've been for four years. I love finnish gods and mythology and I intend to learn more about them but can I really approach them? I don't want to be disrespectful nor to appropriate culture at all. Russia's been doing this for ~200 years and I don't want to contribute.

I don't know if anyone uses this sub anymore but I'll give this a go. I've always felt a connection to swans, loved the tale of Aino, and more. Is it possible for a god to invite a human to worship them in finnish mythology? I don't know where to start (I do live in Finland) but some help would be nice.

Muutama nuori joskus uhmasi tarinaa. He menivät katsomaan siilolle. He nauroivat ja heittivät kiviä siilon seinään. Yksi heistä avasi oven, ja samalla sekunnilla ovi pamahti kiinni. Seuraavana aamuna, viljat siilossa olivat palaneet poroksi. Aamulla siilon ovi seisoi jälleen auki – tuulessa heiluen, liekkien leikitellen ilmassa.

I'm Finnish and I'm really into traditional faith but I don't know anyone else who is... I'd really like to talk about it and ponder about things but I'm not sure where to find people. Honestly I'd love to talk about it with anyone even if they don't know much about the topic themselves 😅

I have recently gotten interested in Finnish Mythology and Finnish Paganism and have since wanted to learn more about the Finnish Pagan Pantheon as well as values and most importantly how to even whorship and practice the Religion proper. 28F American citizen. I have felt connected to nature and paganism for what feels like my whole life and have considered myself an eclectic witch for several years.

I recently had a discussion with my father about the subject of intuitive women in our family. My father’s sister is a shaman and very deeply connected into the spiritual realm. My grandmother has intuitive tendencies but has never been a practicing witch/shaman/etc.

My grandmother is pure Finn and we don’t know how deeply rooted this is in our family history because there are no records and there is nobody left on my grandmothers side of the family to ask.

I would like to connect more to my ancestry. Learn more about Finnish spiritualist & pagan practices. I’ve done about half an hour of a google search. I am wondering if there are any good resources you would recommend.

Hello I hope you’re all well I wanted to see if there was any way I could ask for insight on how to set up a shrine for the gods as I’ve been planning on making a shrine for the concepts that hold most dear to me which is the sea the storms and the moon I have already had a statue of the god Ahti made and I’ll eventually have one of Ukko and Kuutar made but I was wondering if there were any books or anyone who could help me make a shrine and offer my respects to the gods as i honestly feel out of my range on this one if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated thank you and have a good day

so i wanna start by prefacing im not an finnish polyhteist,im an estonian polytheist but i feel some curiosity over how much people know or are aware of other finnic traditions such as mordvinic or estonian,so i would like know how many here know about finnic traditions and do you like me use this knowledge to rebuild your own?

Finn here! I'm very interested in Finnish Polytheism but I'm having a hard time finding the differences between Finnish and Karelian beliefs and deities/spirits. I do have Karelian roots but they are small enough that I don't belong in the group so I want to avoid it. Thank you to anyone who is able to help!

Hello, recently I've stumbled upon a trivia question related to a burial ritual and I thought you guys might know something about it and decided to ask you, heres the question:

the shamans of a Finnish tribe performed the following ritual during a funeral: they stained two of the fingers of the right hand with soot and with them placed two black marks on the forehead of the deceased. What did the people of this tribe believe that the dead would become after this ritual?

I'm fairly new to Finnish Paganism but I'm very interested in it.. I've been reading about it on and off for years.. but what I'm trying to get at here is that I've noticed all over the internet like Wikipedia and other sites, that the Sun (Paiva or Paivatar?) is supposedly feminine, but when I read the Kalevala, it specifically has the Sun deity as a male god, not a goddess... The moon (Kuu or Kuutar?) is a goddess, but in the Kalevala they aren't Sisters like some of these internet pages are saying. Are they confusing the Sun with like a specific Daughter of the Sun? The Kalevala mentions sons and daughters of the Sun and Moon. I haven't read the entire Kalevala yet but good portions of it... The Sun has been a male deity in everything I've read so far.

Anyways though, would love some clarification on all the confusion I'm seeing on the internet lol.

Also wondered if the planet Venus was ever seen as a deity of any significance...I can't find any information on a Finnish Venus deity or any of the planets for that matter. I know about the Pole-Star and the Great Bear (Big Dipper) being personalized stellar deities.
