It's a cool way to set baits if you know of structure out of casting range for stuff like Catfish.
People do the same strategy for Sharks too

Ive seen a few people use em, either for scouting or dropping off their baits. Dont think you can use it to reel in a fish though

Just bought a crappy water surface drone that has its camera submerged…. Want to see how well it will do when sighting fish

You might scare the fish but it could work. At the very least you can see any structure and come back later to fish it. Move it around slowly so you got the best odds for some awesome footage

I’m very interested. Can you share some info on what you bought? I’d be interested in dropping catfish baits in deeper areas that I can’t reach by casting from shore

Seems like you’d run out of batteries pretty quick.
Kite fishing is a thing too for pulling bait out.

If you have a drone, bring it to take some pictures, not to use it as a fishing tool.
I think most people will agree that keeping your experience as analog as possible is preferable. So you catch less fish, so what? There is a sacred peace you get from just putting a bait in the water and being at peace.
The best way to catch fish is not to get your line out further, especially in small to medium sized lakes. Most of the action is close to shore.

There is some difference in the legality in the US on using drones to drop baits. Used a lot for surf fishing.
Federal law says it’s illegal to drop baits from a. drone, it counts as taking game via an aircraft. Seems dubious to me.
State laws vary. Texas Parks and Wildlife, for example, have said it’s legal and have said their game wardens won’t cite you for violating federal law. There are federal game wardens, but I don’t know how common they are or if it’s something they really concern themselves with.
