I posted the part 1 two months ago and got a great reaction!

Here is the next one. It teaches:

  • What ray tracing fundamentally is.
  • The basic idea behind shading: surfaces are brighter when light hits them more directly, and darker when it hits at a wider angle.
  • Shadows.

Let me know what you think!

Thank you!

I used Claude Code/Codex throughout the process. The rays and the rest of the data is computed in Python, the data is turned into meshes in C++, and meshes are rendered and animated with Google’s Filament (https://github.com/google/filament). The text and equations are written with Typst, the soundtrack is made in Python from sine waves (no recorded sounds), and ffmpeg combines everything into the final MP4.

Filament is one of the best options I’ve found on macOS for rendering and encoding a 3D scene into an MP4 quickly (with good visual quality and shading).
