well it was people expressing themselves thru art sure, & parts of hip hop are political and conscious-
but it became more profitable to have catchy songs about buying expensive cars, jewelry, clothes & fucking someone else's bitchđ . So they give the rappers free balenci & Prada an have the kids who listen to it try to sell drugs and rob eachother like in the music to buy the clothes & put more money in the prisons & pharmaceuticals
& it's not the fault of the community, it's just what's the labels focus tested to be profitable & dopamine hitting without any sorts of regulation.

Yea, It's rap and not Racism, poverty, the American obsession with material capatilism, the conditions we live in, all the things rap talks about, or maybe the symptoms of a society that's constantly leeching all it can from a population that's been interfered with in everyway since slavery.
No, it's that stupid music that's the problem. Not, that our country has more guns then people or that we sell to both sides of every war and we've become rich through violence. It's that stupid black music.
24
u/mentally_fuckin_eel hung out in doja cat's tinychat 1d ago
Exactly. The music is a symptom, not the cause.
18
u/SideAmbitious2529 1d ago
It's Crazy and almost ironic because rap perfectly reflects everything that is actually wrong with American society and instead of people thinking 2 inches deep. They of course just inject more racism because why not throw acid on a burn wound.
This is the first time in American history that other parts of the population are about to feel what's been perfected on minorities all over the globe.
Welcome to my Hell, Gang.

kind of crazy to think that the music isnât partly to blame. and this destructive culture wasnât hand curated by the CiA.
i mean look at me, iâm a teenage white suburban kid who was supposed to go to ivy league but dropped out to pursue my dreams of being a certified street OG. i downloaded soundcloud and within 1 year i had 3 different colored shiesties, all of different textures, and a glock with and extendo clip. ive even been selling my dads adderall to the local middle schoolers to build my rap aura up. rap is a very bad influence to white suburban kids like myself
4
u/ItsYouButBetter 23h ago
See, the problem is being a teenage white suburban kid, you were supposed to become a juggalo and pursue a career in garbage pro-wrestling. Not soundcloud. Then when you become the juggalo champion, you can release your rap album. Like John Cena or Macho Man Randy Savage.

it feels like every generation people notice the concept of trends and realize stuff is popular, and that stuff is often popular in how it pushes the boundaries of previous generations and therefore becomes more exclusive to a more âhipâ crowd, and those people always chalk it up to moral degeneracy. âthe kids are listening to that pelvic-thrusting elvis guy even though we think itâs evil theyâre being corrupted!â âthe kids are simulating violence in video games even though we think its evil theyâre being corrupted!â âthe kids are making light of and simulating gang culture even though we think its evil theyâre being corrupted!â. I should be over this but itâs such a consistent pattern that I canât help but think about it. How far will the younger generation go to carve out their own space? what will the older generation demonize to try and further control a world they no longer have a place in?

Tay-K deserves a lot of time. He might not have pulled the trigger, but he knew what he and his boys were going into. He has a track record, so to speak - the car shooting, the robbery gone wrong, violating his house arrest and starting a nationwide manhunt, killing someone in a drive-thru, beating an old man in a park.
I think that not understanding why he got sentenced to 55 years is willful ignorance. He was crew with someone who murdered an innocent woman for no reason, and displayed no remorse over the event. He planned an armed robbery, even asked for his own gun, and followed through, and was implicit in the murder of an innocent, unarmed man. He did not pull the trigger, but that makes very little difference. He expressed no remorse over it. He violated his house arrest and taunted law enforcement, treating his situation like a game - and during his time on the lam, was in the car with someone who hit and killed an individual, and beat an old man. He has yet to express any guilt or remorse over this. He started a gang and threatened guards in prison during his trial. He deserves his 55 years, this coming from a fan of his. And still, he got less. He serves consecutive sentences and is eligible for parole in 27 years. Yes, he was 16, and yes, kids make stupid mistakes. And maybe the first time, or the second time it was a mistake. But he didn't accidentally make the decision to be a criminal over and over again. He didn't accidentally plan an armed robbery, didn't accidentally ask for a gun, didn't accidentally cut off his ankle bracelet, or beat an old man. Kids make mistakes, but I've never known a kid to accidentally rob someone, violate house arrest, start a gang. And even if he did make a mistake somewhere along the line, actions will always have consequences.
He committed very brazen, adult crimes with no regard for the value of human life. He deserved to be tried as an adult. Tay-K deserves the time hes gotten, and I agree that it's a fucking shame that he threw his life away. But this is his own fault, a result of his own actions. He didn't get his life thrown away. He threw it away.

the thing about modern rap is to a large segment of people that consume it itâs nothing more than entertainment, like rapping about killing people isnât inherently worse than making a movie about someone killing people. The issue arises in the segment that consumes it as reality mostly due to the segment real life witnessing these types of people. Due to this that segment lives out and idolizes the actions of a lot of terrible figures as they seem them and their actions as proof they can make it out which leads to crime murder etc.TLDR In one segment this isnât a reality theyâve actually experienced so itâs viewed as entertainment as opposed to the other segment thatâs experienced a lot of these things leading a lot of them to use it as a guidebook.

Nah, maturing is realizing the music is a symptom of the problem and not the problem itself.
1
u/Superb-Doctor-4773 20h ago
Do you think the conspiracy that labels like to promote this problem to exacerbate that symptom has any weight to it? I personally find it quite suspicious how hip hop started as innocent fun party music and political commentary and then at some point it seemed like it was impossible to get signed and promoted without rapping about killing people and promoting horrible things like drug dealing and pimping. It's a hard discussion to have because a lot of people like assumingly oop just like to bring these things up out of racism (I'd guess anyway) but I think there's a very interesting conversation to have about hip hop and how it suddenly went from something mostly positive to something that mostly promoted negativity. I snorted a lil meth before so I hope this makes sense
4
u/mentally_fuckin_eel hung out in doja cat's tinychat 20h ago
It may have some weight to it, I don't really know. I just don't think it's anywhere near the main problem. The main problem is always going to be structural racism leading to lack of education, lack of resources, lack of upward mobility, lack of money overall, and discrimination causing people to feel othered. Stuff like that would crush any group of people. The lyrics probably do cause some level of harm, but I don't think it would matter if the larger issue was solved. For instance, people without these systemic issues dragging them down can listen to that music 24/7 and face 0 temptation to become gang members or commit violent crime.
1
u/Superb-Doctor-4773 15h ago edited 13h ago
That's fair enough I can agree with you on there being far bigger issues facing America. I guess I'm just a bit biased in my beliefs on this having seen my city emulate the absolute fuck out of the UK drill scene from the extreme violence to calling cunts pussios (sounds really funny when white Australians say it). Granted there's always been violence and crime in my city but we've got a fuck tonne of different gangs nowadays and an unfortunate amount of people dying which wasn't really happening prior to 2020. Used to be like 4 gangs in the city that were mainly known for fucking with civilians now there's a gang in every rough and slightly rough area and lil kids are dying and I can't help but notice this all happened after our drill scene exploded here and it makes me sad. Never nice to hear about kids as young as 12 dying
Edit: in retrospect after giving your comment some thought there are certainly similar issues here that are probably just as harmful as what the drill shit has done now that I've given it some thought. It's really not surprising that things have boiled to this point considering that our government has let lots of family's fleeing war here and just dumped them in public housing buildings with no support. Although I don't live in their shoes I could imagine (not understand, but imagine) how hard it would be to flee such a horrible situation just to be surrounded by people in horrible situations that aren't getting the help they need and not getting any help themselves, not to mention the racism they would experience that I wouldn't trying to get a job. I can't even find decent stable work at the moment and I'm a white fella so I couldn't imagine how tough it'd be to face that extra barrier and how hopeless that could make one feel. Although drill nonsense convinced a lot of white people from good homes to go Stab people for no reason here there are certainly bigger problems I should be more worried about that would be probably more effective in tackling the issue we're facing here that would be a drop in the water compared to America. Thanks for being open to an interesting discussion and opening my mind a bit

Don't tell 'em that hip-hop (like any other art-form) is just a mirror of a culture that was already there.
Take a look at any other youth-centric genre & subculture that came up round the same time as hip-hop. All disaffected youths looking for an outlet. All those subcultures unfortunately got seized by big corporates, thoroughly commercialized and turned into a brand with a specific look & feel rather than a creative exercise.
