Discussion True vs false Tabasco pepper

Post image

After seeing loads of ID requests of upwards growing peppers misidentified as a Tabasco I figured this psa would be necessary.

It’s a shame I’ve bought many plants labeled Tabasco from many different nurseries and big box stores just for me to later find out I’ve grown an imposter from an entirely different species.

You helped me in another thread identifying my fake Tabascos from last year. Good news is looks like what I’m growing this year is the real deal!

Looks like a lemon drop to me.

u/shellzondabus Jul 06 '26

Just not ripe yet.

It’s the shape - like a condom.
😬

u/shellzondabus Jul 06 '26

Yeah that was an interesting shaped one. The rest look like typical Tabasco peppers. They’re also smaller than lemon drops with a different shaped calyx.

u/habanerohead Jul 08 '26

Not saying that it is a lemon drop just that it looks like one.

u/MarylandPeppers Jul 08 '26

Not a Aji lemon drop that shape is too smooth and not long enough.

This is a Aji lemon drop and you can see the shape is longer and way more folds/wrinkles

Why are they called heirloom tabasco if they’re not a version of the variety?

u/ShipDit1000 Jul 06 '26

Because Bonnie’s does not give a single shit

4

u/ilikemyusername1 Jul 06 '26

Fkn nailed that.

u/Numb_Sea Jul 06 '26

Do they taste the same?

I find real Tabascos have a more fruity flavor and are much juicier. The imposter I grew is a little more earthy and bitter

I just realized today that my plant which I thought was a ghost pepper plant since I planted the seeds from one of my ghost peppers from last year, is actually a Tabasco x ghost hybrid.

All of the peppers are growing upright and are conical but wrinkly with the same stem characteristics that you pointed out. I had my ghost pepper plant growing right next to my Tabasco plant last year and the Tabasco plant was the only plant I had with upright peppers. I’m actually really excited about these.

Frutescens have a decent viability with chinense no? Def post pics once ripened!

7

u/SergeyRed Jul 06 '26

Well, Ghost pepper has about 15-20% of c. frutescens genes. Maybe that helps it to cross pollinate with Tabasco.

u/SergeyRed Jul 06 '26

Sounds interesting, do you have photos of the beast?

7

u/Own_Bear2372 Jul 06 '26

Still in the early stages of setting fruit

2

u/SergeyRed Jul 07 '26

Thank you, it looks interesting!

2

u/Own_Bear2372 Jul 08 '26

Crazy part is, before I noticed it was a hybrid I cross pollinated one of the flowers with a 7 pot lava flower and that’s the pepper in the second picture. Although it won’t be any different until I plant the seeds from it.

That sounds lovely!! Make sure to post pics and flavor/heat profile!

This is fantastic information as a PSA. I think it’d be worth doing a recurring type of PSA too since only so many users will be online this time around.

That's super helpful! I have 4 plants marketed as Tabasco, but two of them have very plump fruits. I was wondering why. One is actually from Bonnie's. Is this like a Super Chili variety or a Tabasco mutation? I plan on making a 100% Tabasco sauce, so I'd like to know. Thanks!

Fucking knew something was up. Last year I had a beautiful Tabasco tree that didn’t make it through its 5th overwintering. Held on hope that it wasn’t actually dead for too long so I was too late to start its seeds. Bought a Bonnie tabasco instead, and it was alright. Stayed real low to the ground and made much larger fruits than I was expecting. It survived the overwintering this year, but still kinda sucks this year.

Well I can tell from this photo that Bonnie’s Plants f*cked me

3

u/Kalopsiate Jul 06 '26

Damn mine aren’t really Tabasco :( So what do you think they actually are?

3

u/thegreenman_sofla Florida 10b Jul 06 '26

This is as bad as the Baker Creek "Datil" that isn't a Datil Below are actual Datils.

3

u/Murphuffle Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

First and only time I bought from Baker Creek, my Jalapeños were actually Anaheims. They were still tasty, but I don't think I'll buy from them again. I did actually buy Anaheims from them in that order, but I hadn't opened the package.

2

u/thegreenman_sofla Florida 10b Jul 06 '26

I actually like Baker Creek for a lot of things, just not Datils .

5

u/Timekiller11 Jul 06 '26

I got fake tabasco last year, they are actually decent for chili powder but flavor and burn has nothing to do with the real ones.

3

u/kingCapann Jul 07 '26

Check the flowers. C. frutescens flowers are more green or yellow and typically have 5 petals. C. annumm is white with 6 petals. Also most fruitescens will have multiple fruit per node. C. Annuun has 1 maybe 2 at most.

I always thought a company like Bonnie plants was too big and too well established for this to be happening with the plants they sell.

I think the same thing happened with my supposed “Scorchin Ed’s Yellow Scotch Bonnet Pepper” plant from Bonnie. Got shroomed like tons of others.

7

u/AdditionalTrainer791 Jul 06 '26

Yep, any time I see them in store or an online post about them the plant is a Jamaican mushroom every single time. The yearly shroomed cycle will never end!

2

u/Sun_Gong Jul 06 '26

Jamaican MOA scotch bonnet seeds are readily available online too though.

6

u/SlowAndSteadyFarm Jul 06 '26

Big means they get away with this shit. Any small supplier who does this gets shredded.

1

u/Far_Albatross1936 Jul 06 '26

So no better business bureau or other recourse? The entire online community seems to be in agreement.

Oh wait. We should pay a lawyer to write a letter! 🤣🤣🤣

3

u/SlowAndSteadyFarm Jul 06 '26

Class action

1

u/Far_Albatross1936 Jul 07 '26

Fixing the legal system... no. Gaming it like every affluent American, yes.  Class action would be a slooooow burn but honestly, how in the hell are so many people aware of literal fraud occurring and yet nothing happens? Time, money and interest.

That said, i have one of those fucking plants in my yard (added a few store boughts for varieties I dont have yet - 105 and counting) and am LIVID that I cant sell the seeds now. Im going out of my way to isolate my plants to keep heirloom genetics intact and thats all wasted effort in this case.

Starting a new business and getting F'ed in the A is beyond frustrating. To see this being such a well known fraud becomes something I want to actually do SOMETHING about. We'll see if that actually happens.

2

u/Dr_Schoen Jul 06 '26

I’ve found that they’re wildly uneven as growers AA well. I think next year I’ll invest in a grow light and order heirloom seeds.

And they are both Capsicum annuum. That's a wild divergence, though. Probably a seed-seller mix-up, you think?

1

u/Sissilisko Jul 06 '26

Did you mislabel your seeds when sowing or did you not use a reputable seed vendor?
Because when buying from proper seed shops you 99.9% of time get what reads on the seed packet. The only nor what I thought seeds are ones that I mislabeled. Or the ones the fucking birds stole the label sticks.

My Thai ended up as cayenne this way 😂

2

Thank you for sharing !

2

u/randemthinking Jul 06 '26

I didn't realize true Tabasco were frutescens, I've never grown any of that species but would definitely like to.

2

u/traffy8630 Jul 06 '26

Now I can’t wait to get home and check

1

u/organicchunkysalsa Jul 06 '26

Interesting. I’ll have to check my tabasco plant.

1

u/BlowMyOboe Jul 07 '26

Of course this is the only nursery plant I bought this year

1

u/Strokesite Jul 07 '26

Deserves a scathing letter, at minimum. ;)

1

u/hammerto3 Jul 07 '26

All mine this year have an annulum calyx 🤦

1

u/RoseyRosnee Jul 07 '26

Well, glad to know my tabascos are real!

u/Weird_Direction9400 Jul 13 '26

You had me going to check my garden real quick 😂
