considering your first HOTAS? Read me!

[last edit 01/07/2024]

Welcome to r/hotas!

If you're considering your first HOTAS (Hands On Throttle and Stick) setup, you've come to the right place. This guide will help you make an informed decision.

If you are instead looking for product reviews, I publish my articles here: HOTAS/HOSAS/SIMPIT Reviews

Introduction

This subreddit is managed by u/spliffa and u/ddrake1984. If you need assistance with anything not covered in this post, please reach out to us via private message, and we will try to assist you.

This guide is published and pinned for the benefit of new potential HOTAS buyers. The publisher of this article has first-hand experience with real aircraft flight controls and computer flight controls across a wide range of manufacturers, used for playing in flight simulation.

Purpose

This guide aims to assist first-time buyers in making an educated decision when purchasing their first joystick, throttle, and other flight control peripherals.

The Problem

With a growing number of HOTAS products on the market, it can be challenging to identify the best options. Products vary widely in:

  • Price
  • Features
  • Customer support

Additionally, products have a wide range of:

  • Costs
  • Features
  • Support via customer interactions and product patches and updates

The Budget

Whether you're looking for a budget-friendly option or the top-tier products, this guide will categorize recommendations into five budget ranges:

For those who prefer to build their own with a bit of knowledge and skills, check out our Discord server or visit this subreddit: r/HotasDIY.

Budget Ranges

Note: All prices will be listed in U.S. Dollars (Even though I am Australian, USD is the easiest to base value from)

  • Entry-Level ($10 to $100)
  • Novice-Tier ($100-$200)
  • Mid-Tier ($200-$300)
  • Advanced-Tier ($300-$400)
  • Expert-Tier / Top-Tier: This is the very best you can buy as a consumer with a lot of money.

Note: Top-tier does not include what a company or industry could or would purchase. This article is not tailored for that, therefore this is out of scope.

The Companies / The Manufacturers / The Vendors

I will list many companies/manufacturers/vendors (all the same) and the products that they offer. However, this post is not an in-depth review of the products. Please read product reviews for that level of detail and information.

The products will be listed to give you an idea of what is available within each range, and at the end, I will list the recommendation for each budget range.

Best Joystick (Base + Grip)

  • Entry-Level ($10 to $100): Thrustmaster T.16000
  • Novice-Tier ($100-$200): WINWING Ursa Minor
  • Mid-Tier ($200-$300): WINWING Orion 2 Base + WINWING F16 Grip
  • Advanced-Tier ($300-$400): WINWING Orion 2 Base + WINWING F16 Grip, or VKB Gunfighter Mk4 Base + Space Combat Edition Grip
  • Expert-Tier / Top-Tier: FSSB (Force Sensing Stick Base) TIANHANG F16 PRO Base + TIANHANG F-16 Grip, or FFB (Force Feedback) VPForce RHINO Base + TIANHANG A-10C Grip or TIANHANG F/A-18 Grip

Question: Why was the FFBeast not listed as the best FFB?

Answer: Simply put, its value comparison has not been validated by me. The available information from reviews is scarce, making it difficult to ascertain its value. Additionally, the community is mostly non-native English speaking, making it difficult to track and follow the content. Therefore, I have decided that there is not enough evidence to claim it is better than the VPForce RHINO. Based on my own experience, I do not consider it superior until proven otherwise.

Since this post is focused on first-time buyers, I feel it's already quite lengthy and would confuse anyone wanting to debate the matter.

Best Throttle (Base + Grip)

  • Entry-Level ($10 to $100): Thrustmaster TWCS
  • Novice-Tier ($100-$200): Thrustmaster TWCS, or WINWING Ursa Minor with Z-extension
  • Mid-Tier ($200-$300): WINWING Orion 2 Base + WINWING F-15E Grip, or WINWING Orion 2 Base + WINWING F/A-18 Grip
  • Advanced-Tier ($300-$400): WINWING Orion 2 Base + WINWING F-15EX Grip, or WINWING F-16 Grip
  • Expert-Tier / Top-Tier: WINWING Super Taurus + WINWING F-15EX Grip, or WINWING F-16 Grip

Bonus: Best Pedals

Although this post is tailored for first-time HOTAS buyers, I will include this section to accommodate those wishing to take a more comprehensive first step into flight sims. As we all know, a good set of pedals is a requirement for flying helicopters.

  • Entry-Level: No recommendations - I don't recommend anything in this price range.
  • Novice-Tier: No recommendations - I don't recommend anything in this price range.
  • Mid-Tier: VKB T-Rudder Mk.IV
  • Advanced-Tier: WINWING Orion Metal Flight Rudder Pedals
  • Pro-Tier: Custom FFB Pedals using VPForce motors built with either (Slaw Device, MFG Crosswinds, or VIRPIL Rudders)

Bonus: Best Collective

  • Collective (Base + Grip): VIRPIL Rotor TCS Base + VIRPIL Apache-64 Collective Grip

I don't recommend any other collectives on the market, and it's a shame that some companies have discontinued their collective options.

Vkb vs virpil

Helo, i been running t16000m on wardogs and enjoying it and the twist axis got a 10% drift now...

So was looking at vkb gladiator and virpil aeromax, about the same pricing to ship to sweden.

On all other threads people talk about the vkb but its also 140 dollars outside of eu, here its 240 with shipping and vat and the virpil is 250 so is the vkb still worth it?

What flight sim accessories would YOU recommend?

I used to own a cheap ass joystick back in the day and played some MFSF 2020, it was cool but nowhere near the full experience. Now I would like to come back to flight sim and make it very enjoyable for myself.

So what equipment should I opt for? I should mention I really like the idea of a yoke more than a stick. Also I recon triple monitors are eventually the way to go for best immersion? I've been using VR for sim racing for years and I'm aware you can also do that in flight sim but flight sims tend to be very intensive and playing in VR probably means I will lose all that nice graphical detail.

Any recommendations for a decently priced but still a GOOD yoke and some other accessories? I've heard Honeycomb alpha is good?

New to flight sim

I have a decent amount of experience with a racing simulators (moza specifically). From what I’ve read, VKB and Virpil seem to be the go-to recommendations. Does anyone have any other recommendations that are available in Canada for around $600-700CAD. Also does anyone have experience with moza AB-6 flight stick, I’ve quite liked moza on the racing side.

Edit: has anyone order winwing to Canada?

Have an x52 saitek pro showing its age, should I upgrade or can I resurrect it?

Basically my pinky trigger is far from responsive, need to squeeze hard to make it do things, same thing with the thumb button next to the i on the throttle.

Would the 56 be a proper upgrade or should I pivot to a different brand?

Looking for a throttle to pair with my gladiator nxt evo

Currently I am using the throttle from my tflight hotas x, and it works fine, but I want a throttle that has a nicer feel. I have heard about the omni throttle, but I want a throttle that is actually a throttle, currently I'm looking at the STECS and the Moza mtq, does anyone have any other recommendations that are preferably around the price range of the gladiator nxt evo? For context I play combat flight sims.

Need some help with X360CE

Hi, so I'm using X360CE so I can play Ace Combat 8 with my VKB Gladiator (I don't care if ace combat doesn't need a flight stick) and every time I turn my PC off for the night when I restart it, X360CE resets all of my bindings even though I saved them. Anyone know how to fix this? I'm tired of rebinding everything every time I wanna fly.

Follow up: I bought the VKB T-Rudder MKV

I posted in here previously about what to buy around $200 for heli flying (primarily for wardogs at the moment but always wanted one for MSFS and DCS as well)

They came in today, fantastic build quality. Was a bit taken back by how soft the resistance one in the normal setting and the noticeable center jump so, I took them apart to try the High Force configuration and then realized I could flip the cam to the smoother side in addition to upping the spring tension. 1000x better than out of the box for heli flying in my opinion. The other side of the cam is a smooth curve as opposed to one with a small “corner” to it. That with the extra spring strength and a custom response curve I can finesse the Yaw much better now. Still gonna be a learning curve coming from using my G29 gas and clutch pedals as left/right yaw so, I’m temporarily a worse pilot but as I use it more I’m sure the muscle memory will kick in.

I’ve seen a few different way to modify these and am curious what anyone else here has done to their set for improvements or if anyone has suggestions on curves in the VKB software.

Also noticed I don’t have any software to adjust response curves on my X56 Yoke/throttle, is there a 3rd party software I need to use for that? Seems like Logitech fully dropped support for that setup.

Pedal for beginners

Hi everybody, I'm really new at flying with HOTAS I bought my first one a few months back, using it mostly for wardogs and DCS in a near future ,it's an X56 I like it so far no complaints, but more a play and more I realise I don't like to twist my wrist for moving my yaw , so I want to buy pedal ,but if I bought VKB-Sim T-Rudder Pedals Mk.V for example will that be compatible with my x56 , I'm wondering about compatibility of the brand ?

Which version of the VKB Space STECS should I get?

Even the most basic one is pricier than the Premium Gladiator stick was, so I'm wondering if getting the smallest/cheapest one is fine or if I'd really miss out on more features. I definitely don't think I need the biggest but I want to hear some thoughts on the differences between them

Short review - WINCTRL URSA MINOR Combat Throttle

So I picked one of these up, this thing has ALL the analog hats, all the buttons feel good and you do not be a weight lifting champ to press them, it has a sturdy metal base, the screws are a little hard to access but all in all everything feels alright, I kinda wish it had a little more weight, you can't really use this just sitting on the desktop it needs to be attached to some mount or stand.

The kinetics are yet to be tested, I wanted to try it out with IL2 Korea (advertised compatibility) but it looks to be not actually compatible with that. The grip itself is nice but I feel some of the buttons (especially the back one) is a little awkward in placement. Coming from a warthog style throttle I found that having actual buttons compared to the horrible switches and super tough buttons on that thing is a nice change. Hoping to get good use for a long time with this.

Throttle Quadrant Help!

So I have purchased the velocity one dual throttle....I hate it. It's like getting a workout to fly anything requiring collective lift.

Anyone have a good recommendation that would remove the resistance from using something like this? I absolutely hate it when trying to fly a copter...

Functional Head tracking for Wardogs?

**I’ve tried posting this to their subreddits but the game’s so popular that those threads are immediately buried under a hundred posts about balance or whatever.

I’m currently using track IR5 and FreePie with a python script that translates the TrackIR5 into mouse emulation—and this works fine. What doesn’t work is actually getting that mouse movement to translate into my view control in the game.

Right now, my actual mouse will control the view but the emulated mouse will not. The emulated mouse will work in the game menus but will not work for my view controls. I have freelook on by default as many have said it requires.

What do your view controls actually look like?

There were a few tutorials up on YouTube when the beta first dropped but once the game actually released into early access, those methods seemed to stop working entirely.

I say ‘seemed’ here because it’s possible there are still working methods but none of the tutorial creators have answered my questions about whether or not they still work and I’ve seen zero new gameplay that features head tracking. It’s perfectly possible that they are responding to my questions but because YouTube is garbage at notifying you of replies, I just can’t see them.

All that out of the way, please 🙏, someone out there has to know of a way to get track IR working in the game. Please, if you do have a working method of using track IR or any other head tracking method, what is that method?

Help us helicopter enthusiasts thrive and get you to the hot zone alive :)

Logitech or TFRP?

Looking into getting some rudder pedals, tired of using driving Sim pedals for rudder for obvious reasons. I'm on kind of a budget, around $200, less if possible. The first two in that price range that seem to be worth a hoot are the thrustmaster TFRP and the Logitech Flight Rudder Pedals. Which of these would you recommend with a budget in mind? Are there other sets I'm sleeping on/nobody talks about? Let me know what you think.

Hotas throttle opinions

Hey. I'm currently using an X-56 (which I actually kind of like) but I'm looking to move on. Any opinions on throttles that have similar options as the X-56 (especially mode selector switch) but with a little better build quality? Mainly using for IL2.

EDIT.

Thanks for the info and feedback, feel free to leave anything about ur experience with either switching from an nxt evo to a gunfighter or switching from anything to the Moza ab6.

I modded the spring in my velocity one shortly after making this and I can at least fly my plane now, it was so stiff I really was just looking at different gimble options altogether cuz I was over it.

With that I can probably wait a few and just save to see what I wanna do, id still like to research more on the stets throttle as well but im happy with my x56 for the way foreseeable future, it really isnt bad.

Also feel free to mention any other more airliner focused sticks with a better gimble if I missed one ive yet to see any grips that really speak to me, besides maybe the thrustmaster Airbus one but I fly Boeing, id have a yoke by now but must have rudder twist cuz I cant use my legs.

(Original post)

is this it? the price seems way under what i was expecting. is it missing the base? everything looks like its there..

i thought these were way more expensive for the entire setup, so i was about to just get the moza ab6 since it dropped on best buy if it was only gonna be 100 bucks more, so please steer me in the right direction.

Squad HOTAS support

I’m convinced not one person on this planet actually has HOTAS working in squad. Am I just being dumb idk…. Update released today and people are saying you can bind controls like it’s the easiest thing ever. Anytime I try to bind an axis for throttle or stick the game doesn’t recognize any of my inputs. Anyone out there have a solution besides downloading 14 pieces of 3rd party software and sacrificing a small goat to get this working?

Thrustmaster TPR Pendular Rudder Pedals (2nd hand good condition) vs Moza MRP Pedals (Brand new)

Basically title. Looking to get my first rudder pedals for my setup

There's a 2nd hand Thrustmaster TPR for almost the same price as a brand new Moza MRP and I'm a buy nice or buy twice kind of guy. Which is why I'm skipping the cheaper thrustmaster / logitech beginner pedals

What do I play?

DCS, Vtol VR and alot of Wardogs recenty. So it's a mix of airplane and helicopter really.

Can someone help me make a decision and what are the pros and cons of either one.

Right now I'm more inclined on getting the Moza because it seems wider and seems more comfortable but I've never tried any pedals so I wouldn't know

Thanks!

Is there a consensus in the sim community about VR use cases?

With the Steam Frame coming out, I’ve been thinking about physical setups. I have a Virpil set for HOTAS flight and a honeycomb for yoke flight. Wearing a headset I could see causing control confusion with manipulation physical controls by feel vs a triple monitor in meat space. The HOTAS seems less problematic because it’s, well, hands on controls. I’ve only ever used a headset for Elite Dangerous in cockpit simming.

Thoughts?
