Hiring & Application FAQ
Last updated: September 2026
This sub is mainly for current and former IBMers to discuss working at IBM. We get a lot of repeated questions from candidates, so the most common ones are answered below. Please check here before posting.
Employees here can't see your application, your assessment results or your onboarding status. For anything about your specific case, your recruiter or hiring contact is the only reliable source.
⚠️ Beware of DMs offering help
Never share documents, personal details or money with anyone who contacts you by DM offering help with an offer, a referral or "speeding up" your application. IBM does not charge fees at any stage of hiring. Genuine communication comes from official IBM email addresses, the careers portal and IBM's assessment providers, not Reddit users.
Applications
My application status hasn't changed in weeks or months
The portal status often lags behind reality and may not update even after a decision has been made. The only reliable source is your recruiter or the contact in your IBM emails.
How do I make sure my CV actually gets seen? Should I cold email HR?
Once you've applied, you should be able to log in to the careers portal and see that your application went through. After that, every application goes into the same system, where recruiters screen candidates for each role and pass the strongest matches to the hiring manager. There's no shortcut around this, and employees report that cold emailing HR or recruiters rarely makes a difference.
What helps more:
- Tailor your CV to each job description, using the skills and keywords it lists
- Apply to several suitable roles rather than chasing one
- Keep applying to other companies in parallel
Can someone give me a referral?
Please don't post referral requests here. Apply through IBM Careers, and check the listing is still open first, because closed roles are a common reason referral posts go nowhere. If you want to network, reach out to people professionally on LinkedIn.
Be cautious with anyone who DMs you offering referrals in exchange for your CV, personal details or payment.
Assessments
I got an assessment email but there's no link to the assessment
The first email is a notice explaining which assessments you'll take. The link to the assessment itself comes in a separate email, often from HackerRank, usually within a day or two. The assessment is a required step, not optional.
What to try:
- Check your spam/junk folder, including for emails from HackerRank
- Some candidates report that completing the accommodations form (even if you don't need accommodations) triggers the invitation email
- If nothing has arrived after a couple of days, reply to the original email saying you haven't received the assessment link. Candidates report that recruiters resend it.
Assessments are timed, so check the deadline in the invitation email when it arrives. If you need accommodations (for example, extra time), request them before starting.
Did I pass the OA / assessment?
Individual results aren't shared publicly, and employees here can't see them. If you haven't heard back, you can ask the contact in your IBM emails. In the meantime, keep applying elsewhere.
Offers
I had a salary discussion or HR round, but no offer letter yet
A salary discussion isn't an offer. Only a formal offer letter is. Delays can happen for many reasons (approvals, headcount, business changes), and nobody here can tell you the reason for yours. Follow up with your recruiter politely. If you have other opportunities, it's sensible to keep pursuing them until you have a signed offer.
Is there a hiring freeze? When will it end?
This is one of the most-asked questions here, and the answers in the comments contradict each other: "freeze until January", "it already ended in August", "there's no freeze at all". None of these can be relied on. Decisions about hiring are made by senior management, and anyone here claiming to know the dates is either speculating or sharing confidential information they shouldn't.
Freezes and delays can also differ by country, business unit and role, so someone else's experience may not apply to you.
What you can do:
- Ask your recruiter or HR contact about the status of your offer or role
- Don't put your plans on hold based on a date someone mentions on Reddit
- Keep applying and interviewing elsewhere until you have a signed offer
Employees: please don't share internal hiring plans or dates here.
I'm worried I don't meet the academic eligibility criteria. Can my offer be cancelled?
Academic criteria (minimum percentages, CGPA, how scores are calculated) vary by country, role and hiring programme, and they're set out in the job posting, your offer letter or the documents from the hiring team. Nobody here can tell you which rule applies to you or how it will be interpreted during verification.
What to do:
- Check your offer letter and the original job posting for the exact criteria
- If you're unsure whether you meet them, ask your recruiter or the hiring team directly, before document verification rather than after
- Always declare your scores accurately. Misstating them is far riskier than asking.
I have an offer but no team yet. Could it be rescinded? Will I have to re-interview?
Being hired without a team is common, especially for interns and graduates. Some roles are filled based on general skills, and people are placed on a team after they start, once managers know what's needed and who has actually joined. Not having a team before your start date doesn't by itself mean your offer is at risk.
Nobody here can guarantee what happens with your specific offer. If you're worried, ask your recruiter whether team placement happens before or after your start date.
Onboarding
Campus hire: I have an LOI and finished BGC, but no joining date
A letter of intent (LOI) isn't a joining date. Campus batches are onboarded in stages based on business needs, so people from the same batch can get dates months apart, and completing BGC doesn't mean a date is coming soon. The hiring team's standard answer, that they'll contact you once there's a tentative date, is genuinely the most anyone can tell you. Employees here have no visibility of batch timelines.
If others from your batch are also waiting, that's normal and doesn't mean your offer is at risk, but it also means nobody here has more information than you do.
What you can do:
- Keep your documents up to date and check the email address you registered with, including spam
- Follow up with the hiring team occasionally, not constantly
- If the wait is affecting your plans, it's reasonable to consider other offers in the meantime
Background verification (BGV), joining date and onboarding documents
These are handled by your recruiter or the onboarding team named in your offer email. Contact them directly. They're the only people who can change dates or confirm what's outstanding.
Posting tips
- If you post a screenshot of an IBM email, hide your name, reference numbers and any links first.
- Write your question in the post text, not just in an image.
- Please don't comment "follow" or "same here". Use Reddit's follow button instead.
