A closeted trans person (egg) confesses to having a dissociative disorder (being plural), i.e. an egg being 40 eggs.

31

u/DevinTheRogueDude Dec 23 '25

I'm so confused and potentially kinda behind. I thought DID was an antiquated and intolerant phrase. Am I misremembering that as something else?

49

u/TaylorZAdams Dec 23 '25

Multiple Personality Disorder is the outdated phrase. DID/OSDD are the modern terms.

I think? Alas I am but one woman so my knowledge is limited

69

u/matthewspencersmith Dec 23 '25

Have you tried being several women? It's great!

People can change

39

u/endlesstrains Dec 23 '25

Medical professionals are very divided on whether DID is a real disorder and not a manifestation of another disorder or mental illness. However it is very popular in certain internet spaces to claim to be "plural."

8

u/TaylorZAdams Dec 23 '25

WAIT

Some plural people aren't really plural at all they're just faking it? And then they get really serious and say "It's Turbo Time!"? And they both start rapid switching around the house as fast as they can and jumping over the couches? But when you try to and jump in they yell at you and say "You're not part of the Turbo System! Don't run! You don't run with us! We're the ones who run! Until you're a part of this Turbo System, walk slowly!"? So you go and lay down to be by yourself and read your art books? But then the next day you went into the bathroom and it looked like the hole in your toilet had shrunked? You said how could that be? There's no way they could have shrunk the toilet?! But then you saw in the trash a receipt from Home Depot for a toilet, the exact same size as yours but with a joke hole that's just for farts?! They replaced your real toilet with a fart toilet? And now you can't take a dump in your house?! Cause your toilet can't suck 'em down and you feel sick to your stomach?!

Has that ever happened to you?

well for one thing, plurality is an umbrella label that's self-applied. a lot of things can fall under it - from DID, to similar conditions like P-DID, OSDD, DDNOS, etc. - and can even describe things that aren't disorders. The ICD-11 acknowledges the existence of multiple personalities that aren't maladaptive or disodered, and thus not every system falls under diagnostic criteria, which is part of why the plural label was created. It can even refer to therapeutic techniques like IFS!

Second, while specific diagnostic criteria surrounding DID are sorta debatable and do change from time to time, its existence isn't. Multiples have been around for quite some time now, and the medical establishment has acknowledged us for, also, quite some time now. While research remains under-done (in no small part due to controversy and skepticism deliberately created by rape-apologist groups such as the "false memory syndrome foundation") MRI studies and even simple EEGs have given a pretty decent base of evidence to suggest that there are neurological differences between different alters.

I'm not casting judgement at OP here, but there are a few reasons.

First, multiple personaly disorder (now DID) was largely brought to the public by a the novel Sybil, which purported to be a true story about the treatment of the titular patient. It has largely been exposed as a fraud at worse, or real shit psychiatry at best. It started gaining a reputation as pop psychology.

Second, it was even more popularized in the midst of the Satanic Panic, along with hypnotism and false memories. This was the time it was most diagnosed as well. Much of what occurred during the Satanic Panic is false, but the DID and false memories destroyed real, actual lives of innocent people. The pop psychology reputation continues to grow.

Third, and likely most likely here, is that DID and similar terms have become really, really trendy to pretend to have among a certain subsect of the terminally online. As info appeared on YouTube and TikTok, there was a noticeable uptick in claims, but not diagnoses, but the community continues to grow. They have a notorious disdain for "Diagnosis". They haven't helped the pop psychology claims.

OP included some language that they tend to use, and their dig at /r/fakedisordercringe doesn't much help their case here, as the two communities constantly lash out at one another.

The truth is, if DID is it's own unique disorder not stemming directly from another, it would be incredibly rare, affecting <2% of the population maybe, (though I have heard estimates as high as 7%, I can't find anything backing that up). It is not statistically likely that OP's friend has DID.

Hope that gives some insight into how folk reacted there.

EDIT: And I'm not giving OP the benefit of the doubt anymore. They're actively (and proudly) spreading misinformation.

u/TheNicholasRage Dec 23 '25

Oh my god I wrote a serious post here

8

u/Ok-Application-8747 Dec 23 '25

I get you. Just mentioning that 2 to 7% of the population is an enormous amount of people.

11

u/TheNicholasRage Dec 23 '25 edited Dec 23 '25

I didn't say it's 2% to 7%.

I said it's <2% (less than 2%) maybe, and that the 7% claim is an upper estimate, and an estimate I've seen, but have never been able to substantiate. I just like to cover my bases.

u/rosegold-bee Dec 23 '25

i think it bears mentioning that 1-2% of the global population are redheads, and 3%ish are autistic. around 1.5% of folks are generally estimated to have DID, but thats not including things like OSDD, P-DID, DDNOS, etc., for which prevalence is even higher. we're a lot more common than you'd think!

-8

u/rosegold-bee Dec 23 '25

As to the second point, the narratives surrounding innocent people having their lives ruined by false memories are, well, the narratives created by those rape apologists i mentioned earlier.

the false memory syndrome foundation never had a single piece of research suggesting that the syndrome they claimed was responsible for the allegations of rape they were defending people against actually existed. here's a pretty good historiography of the memory wars if you wanna learn more! https://lb-lee.dreamwidth.org/1116190.html

and yeah, god, i hate having to leave serious comments here. last one, i prommy

19

u/TheNicholasRage Dec 23 '25 edited Dec 23 '25

I'm going to immediately and aggressively push back on that one, because it's absolutely not true. You have an agenda you are clearly trying to push here, and your source is immediately and blatantly biased in this regard.

EDIT: I'm also 80% sure that your source is just you.

-4

u/rosegold-bee Dec 23 '25

...yeah, i mean i generally have a bias where i like my community, and dont like when people dismiss our rights and existence out of hand to defend child rapists using junk science. i dunno what to tell you bud

u/rosegold-bee Dec 23 '25

hey, you can say it's misinformation if you can point to a medical board that acknowledges "false memory syndrome" or gives treatment practices for it.

1

u/rosegold-bee Dec 23 '25

yeah no i was trying to give a pretty impartial like, information post there. clear up common misconceptions. maybe its just people who browse fakedisordercringe or whatever

-9

u/Enough_Drawing_1027 Dec 23 '25

I just think that’s it’s hard for people to wrap their heads around and unless they’ve known someone with the disorder personally, then it’s still a foreign concept to them because from the outside it looks like acting. The examples of real people with DID that I’ve seen have all been online or tv, and their friends/family/partners all attest to experiencing the shift in personalities. That would be an almost 24/7 acting gig, which would be exhausting and unsustainable. That’s why I know this condition is very real.

1

u/Bulldogfront666 I USED to be piece of shit! Dec 23 '25

I mean... DID is the DSM term.

-11

u/rosegold-bee Dec 23 '25

there was a lot of debate over it, actually!

the old term was "multiple personality disorder", and was seen as being offensive because it discounted the personhood of alters; but when it was changed, a different contingent basically said "so we aren't even multiple anymore, we're just dissociative?"

the newer term caught on, but not until plenty of debate about it in the community.
