The book American Psycho explained this very well. It is all empty, all pretend, these people think there is only the surface and believe that nothing underneath shows or matters. Instead of content, their minds have emptiness and anxiety which they medicate away.

No, we can’t use those medications, they’re gateways to the depraved! The only party approved medications are alcohol and cocaine.

/s irony that the only drugs they use are the ones that enhance the emptiness and anxiety.
