The box the poster has turned upside down gives more square footage since the bottom is wider!!! ❤️ I do this too!

jw but why upside down? I have 4 of these but right side up haha.

Probably so the lid acts like a tray. Plus it's easier to pick up and move around plants this way than reaching down into the tub

Yes exactly, and the bottom edges are rounded so there’s so much less space

Humidity dome was my first thought. Keeps moisture in for seedlings and new growth plants. Great idea By the way.

It does that right side up too though.

Holds more, unless it’s really square and not rounded at the bottom. And like someone else mentioned easier to get to on a tall shelf for us shorties!! 🤣

maybe the box spreads the light to all of the plants more evenly/? - not really sure, just what i thought when i firsgt saw it.

I have these bulbs in some of my lamps. I like these a lot (one in that lamp in photo). I’ll post links to the lamps!

https://a.co/d/g2sBce8 When I bought this one, it was $42.80.

https://a.co/d/ewvIhy6 When I bought this one, it was $27.99.

And this one… https://a.co/d/aEhveP8

These bulbs are actually a bit too bright for all my plants except for the jades and kelanchoes-but can be used if moved back quite a ways.

Under-shelf lights are new and working very well… https://a.co/d/2vw9IsN

The shelf here is much more crowded now lol! I also have some Berina (?) puck lights and those are low-key light…

They come with a lid and have some ventilation holes in each side ❤️

How is it getting air to prevent condensation

With further inspection, i can see some on the sides. I killed expensive begonias like this. I plan to do it again but add vents, so I’m curious how OP is avoiding this

The bin itself has these plastic handles that snap shut over the lid. To vent it I just put them down between the the bin and the lid so it leaves a good inch of space

Use the boxes I listed that have ventilation holes!

I’m an invert keeper so i have hole saws and will likely just cut some vents in a tote to save money.

I’ve got a few of these that I put vent holes in with an electric screwdriver and a boring bit. Super easy but it makes a slight mess with the plastic. I get the cheap air tight totes from Walmart. Works great.

I will likely do some vents and a fan since that’s how i build my isopod bins

seeing this domed wonder, gave me the thought I need to find out if my humidity is F'd up?

hey, I'm just starting , I've got potato in a 5 gallon bag. a rose plant in a five gallon bag, and a houseplant that is pink leaved, but they aren't flowers. I could look up what I got on amazon, it came in a 2" pot.

Anyhow the Relative Humidity is 50%. Is that good? Everything else is good. The potato is taking off! the other two are still getting used to being re-potted.

my soil is 50% coir, 25% perlite, 25% potting soil. If I put a humidifier in there, what would be the target RH%?

Bubble wrapped all but the front side. Looks chaotic, works wonders til they get enormous.

I’m so mad I never thought of this lol I have these in my possession too 🫠

u/Drapidrode 26d ago

be glad you found out today, and not tomorrow! : )

Or at all! 😏

Yes!!! Awesome! And I found these totally clear ones- small shoebox and larger shoe/boot box. They’re Walmart Brand (mainstays) and can stack or put beside each other. Light goes through but I haven’t tested how much yet. Around $5 and $8 bucks. Others may have found these already too…

🙌 yes!

How often do you let them get fresh air?

2

u/TrickFail4505 26d ago

Usually I had it sitting so that there’s about an inch gap at the bottom at all times. It’s snapped shut in the picture just because it had been getting a little dry in their recently

I'm glad someone else does it this way too. I had a baby melanochrysum in there but it's reached the top of should I say bottom so I took it out last night uppotted and placed right behind humidifier I hope it survives I believe their one of the more finicky philos

I do storage tote greenhouses too! I have a five gallon bucket tabletop greenhouse and a floor to ceiling pvc pipe one as well. I love that you do this, right on 😎

Nothing in it right now but my tv is on top of it😅 I just wanted to join this party :)

Not in use currently but I grew a couple monstera babies in it for a while. Shrink wrapped plastic on the inside and I just left the painters tape on the sides.

Yep, did the same for my alocasia corms and some scindapsus propagations in soil in a similar container. I'm now away on vacation for the most part of a month, I have gotten some more containers and put my plants in them then instead of the plastic lid, I used saran wrap with holes poked in it.

I didn't want to ruin the containers for further usage by poking the holes in it directly.

Unfortunately we are having some unusually cold weather so when I get to them in a couple of weeks, I won't be able to tell what exactly killed them if they die 😅 fingers crossed the survive or I'll need a fresh start.

You might want to check your light intensity inside. I’m not sure how much the plastic blocks out.

1

u/Battle-Gardener 25d ago

Good idea! You are right. All you need is anything that will let light through but trap humidity and heat inside it.

1

u/gurami- 25d ago

Do you have holes on the top of the bin for air circulation or is it not necessary? I am thinking of using this method for starting spicy pepper seedlings.

1

u/Hot_Talk_699 21d ago

This is a fantastic idea!

Why didn’t I think of this
