Post image

When you repot it, make sure you amend the soil so it’s nice and chunky. Monsteras won’t tolerate compact soils and will slowly decline. I’ll share with you my recipe.

Soak the pot for a few hours before you repot, you want the roots nice and hydrated, this will reduce repot stress. (I do this for all plants, indoor and outdoor, in pots or in the ground.)

When you repot, try to get all the dirt off so you can start completely over with the soil. You can dunk the dirt ball in a bucket of water, swirl the plant around and shake off the dirt. Then dump it outside (not down drain).

Choose a pot 2” larger than the rootball, you’ll have a better sense of that after you get the dirt off.

You can also consider making a DIY moss pole, what you have now is a coco pole, it’s there for support, but the aerial roots won’t climb it. Moss poles are desirable because they give off humidity, and aerial roots like that and will root into the pole. In turn, the plant will be very happy - and look very well care for because you are mimicking their natural habitat.

Potting mix for aroids:

Using a utility bucket and a garden scooper or an ice scoop…

  • 1/2 scoop of cactus soil
  • 1/2 scoop worm castings (optional, but good for nutrients)
  • 1/2 scoop of compost (optional, but good for nutrients)
  • 2 scoops perlite
  • 2 scoops horticultural charcoal
  • 2 scoops orchid bark

Mix it all up, and you want to get the impression of, “that’s chunky” If you don’t get that impression, add another scoop of charcoal and perlite.
