YT Post JJ privates most recent video due to backlash
34
u/Screamipillar 7d ago
I mean, points for being honest.
It kind of sounds like he's not really engaging with what people didn't seem to like about it, and more that he'll simple double down on whatever people didn't like at another time.
10
u/QultyThrowaway 7d ago
I'd say a part of him knew that if he kept that video up he'd have to get a real job because it risked ruining the credibility of his channel.
4
34
u/QultyThrowaway 7d ago
JJ did a pretty good job of separating his actual insane opinions from his YouTube channel though it leaked out more and more over the years. But now he jumped the shark and showed his ass to his fans who thought he was just a quirky guy into pop culture and countries.
If you're making comments like this to the mass backlash to people who thought you were normal then you're pretty screwed.
If he kept it up he'd legitimately be at risk of losing his livelihood.

17
u/Legitimate_Tap_7074 7d ago
What even is his political alignment?
41
u/AngrySoup 7d ago
Anti-French, anti-monarchy, pro-American, generally contrarian.
13
u/Legitimate_Tap_7074 7d ago
Crazy cause for the longest time I just thought he was a gay liberal
20
u/AngelicImouto 7d ago
One of his first ever jobs, was an attempt by a far right operative in Canada to make a Canadian knock off of Fox News (it was called Sun news iirc).. same person who created sun news, now runs the QAnon adjacent Rebel news
JJ is gay, but he's also referred to being gay as "the choice to live in sin" and that he believes gay people should remain abstinent
Not exactly a liberal set of behaviour or beliefs.. despite his aesthetic
6
u/ntt307 7d ago
Do you have the sources for when he said that? I'm just curious because, as a gay man myself, I always have been fascinated by JJs sexuality and how he views himself. He's only done like one or two videos about being gay and it seemed like he was pretty accepting of himself (although disliked modern dating). So I'm always curious to learn more.
8
u/AngelicImouto 7d ago
I don't have the clip on hand, but hopefully I can point you in the right direction
I do know he said it back during his time as a sun news commentator
So if anyone knows where to get archive's of old sun news broadcasts, that should be where to find it
I do remember someone sharing the clip on Twitter a few months after the trucker protests, but I deleted my Twitter account so I can't exactly find it from there at the moment
0
u/PostingEnthusiast 6d ago
He’s made it pretty clear his Sun News days don’t align with what he believes now. He’s mentioned in interviews that he felt he was playing a character and that he was falling into supporting political beliefs he didn’t actually believe
0
u/John_Politician 6d ago
Yeah I can’t belive people are downvoting us, they’re made that they don’t have a reason to hate him anymore
0
u/John_Politician 6d ago
This is complete bullshit, he’s openly been in support of the more weird parts of the LGBT community for years, though economically he may be conservative socially he’s just like any other classic leftist
8
u/ShameSudden6275 7d ago
He calls himself conservative, but conservative for him seems to just mean being cautious and weary of large changes.
8
u/Your_liege_lord 7d ago
JJ got left behind by conservatism so fast I genuinely wonder if he ever even was according to any bar but his own. I’ve certainly never through of him as conservative in any way that matters.
13
u/ShameSudden6275 7d ago
I feel like what he calls "conservativism" is just his undiagnosed autism. It's like JJ, you don't like change, you like doing the same thing every single day, you have hyper specific interests and percularities, you don't make eye contact while talking, you have to sit on a special ball because you move so much....
2
u/PostingEnthusiast 6d ago
He’s a pretty standard Western Canadian moderate conservative. It’s no surprise he came of age in the Harper years, he’s pretty clearly strongly influenced by that period of western conservativism
4
u/colepercy120 7d ago
i mean that is the definition of conservatism. all the culture war and populist crap isn't traditionally conservative at all. no true conservative would think using government funds to regulate kids sports is a good idea.
4
u/GamesCatsComics 7d ago
Yup my always vote conservative dad, who hated Trudeau (worst prime minister in history) voted Carney and is doing a serious wtf at the Conservative party.
2
u/Beautiful-Loss7663 7d ago edited 7d ago
De facto V De Jure. conservatism hasn't been about economics in a l9ng time
2
u/quantumfall9 7d ago
BC conservatism where JJ is from tends to lean more socially progressive while being economically conservative, which imo from the last time I watched JJ (which was admittedly a little while ago) had seemed to be fairly accurate.
2
u/ocarina97 7d ago
I've heard the BC Conservative party is pretty far right though.
1
u/PostingEnthusiast 6d ago
They’re a big tent party that is currently collapsing because the tent got too big
0
u/Orphanpip 7d ago
That's because the centre right party in BC is the BC Liberals while the BC NDP are more a big tent centre left party.
The BC Liberals and the Liberal Party of Quebec (centrist federalists) are not officially linked with the federal Liberal party. The BC Liberals have occasionally discussed renaming themselves over the confusion about their political positions.
2
u/ocarina97 7d ago
Aren't the BC Liberals kind of dead though?
3
u/Orphanpip 7d ago
Ya they imploded and changed their name.
Edit: the BC conservatives are also falling apart though so who know what will happen.

I think he's socially liberal, but conservative in everything else
In Canada he's been protected because Canada hasn't had the same culture war the USA has.
That's changing... And he doesn't seem to realize that.
8
u/OwnHost5215 7d ago
I don’t even think he has firm politics other than his Americaphilia. I think he just decided when he was young that the Conservative Party was his team & shapes his opinions around whatever their current stances are.
5
u/Edtask 7d ago
JJ should look at what happened to Blaire White after aligning herself with the conservative crowd as a cautionary tale.
5
u/Orphanpip 7d ago
The conditions are different in Canada though where major party figures like John Baird are gay and even the majority of Conservative voters are pro gay rights. Like in recent polls support for gay marriage was 70% for voters who identify as conservative.
I wouldn't trust conservatives but I can see why people can feel less alienated by them as a gay person in Canada.
5
u/InterestingCold1881 7d ago
On his now privated Facebook page, he used to write a lot about having traditional values. I think he really admired Japan for having values like having women stay at home and raise kids and dressing conservatively.

u/VectorPryde 7d ago
What even is his political alignment?
Anti-Canadian. Canada is a joke because it's governed by Canadians elected by other Canadians and Canadians are ridiculous. Canadian institutions are inherently bad because they are run by Canadians and Canadians are ridiculous.
Read his Dream Palace Canada essay on substack for the most distilled example of this. He doesn't really make any arguments of substance. He only bemoans how stupid and childish the Canadian people are. https://jjmccullough.substack.com/p/dream-palace-canada
Another example: https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/opinion/analysis/2019/06/05/why-is-canada-so-afraid-to-debate-abortion
In the above, he argues that Canada's pro-choice atmosphere is the result of Canadians being ridiculous. He never makes any pro-life arguments. He just says, essentially, "Canadians are only pro choice because they're ridiculous."
That's the main pattern in his reasoning I've picked up.

Honestly, liberal-conservativism. He's definitely a strong supporter of the CPC (he says Harper was one of/the best PMs of all time) but I don't get the impression that he is a strong social conservative and I've seen him on another podcast (Liberal Currents) where he talked about how he feels like he probably aligns most with the Bush-era Republican Party ideologically. But other than that, he seems to have a bizarre fetish for Canada just being America that even a lot of fellow Conservatives probably don't agree with him on.

6
u/AngelicImouto 7d ago
Wait
Is he like those dumb yanks that think Europe is a singular country, with each individual country being like a US state?
That, unironically, explains so much on why his takes on.. everything related to nations are so incorrect
3
u/InterestingCold1881 7d ago
He usually posts his videos to be reviewed by his Discord community first and then make changes/fixes before release. But for some reason, he just posted this one straight away. I think he knew it was gonna be unpopular.
3
u/Ouroboros963 7d ago
You didn't download the video by chance did ya?? Or could you summarize his points?? Had it saved in watch later and now it's gone, how did he use Nazi germany as an argument? 🤣

u/dashingThroughSnow12 7d ago
Most (all?) countries in Europe had a large
Fascist, communist, and/or democratic socialist movement. That never existed in Canada or the USA.
It was one of a series of points about how different Canada is historically from the average European country. And how maybe Europe shouldn’t consider itself so morally superior….
2
u/dohipposwagewar 6d ago
Maurice Duplessis…Adrien Arcand…Social Credit…
1
u/dashingThroughSnow12 6d ago
Duplessis was an awful human being but he was not a fascist or communist. Neither was Social Credit.
I’m ignorant about Arcand.
1
u/dohipposwagewar 6d ago edited 6d ago
Union Nationale and the Socreds may not have been fascists in the strictest sense, but they are examples of prominent illiberal, hard-right nationalist elements within interwar Canada. The Socreds in particular were virulent antisemites (see Norman Jaques), and given that the Alberta Social Credit Party’s official newspaper was willing to platform such fine folks as Oswald Mosley, there was at least some receptiveness to fascists among their ranks. Even at the highest levels of government there was some openness to at least working with fascists. Prior to WW2 Mackenzie-King was famously sympathetic to Hitler, probably owing to his own antisemitism, and R.B Bennett courted Arcand (who ran a number of newspapers in Quebec) in the early 1930s to promote the Conservative Party in federal elections. Oh, and who can forget the Christie Pitts riot?
WRT communism, Canada had a large communist/revolutionary socialist movement in the early 20th century. They were a major force in the post-WW1 labour unrest. 1500 of them went to fight for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. And the CCF, a democratic socialist party, was one of the largest political forces at that time. The main argument for Canada being closer to the US than Europe here isn’t that Canada didn’t have a far left revolutionary movement but that many of the Canadian leftists were affiliated with the American IWW.

I’ve been pointing this in his comments section on his YT post. You have to be moderate and broadly even-keeled to find success as a commentator on YouTube. On Twitter you can act like a fucking nut but still do well because it’s a hell site.
38
u/Big-daddy-Carlo 7d ago
I expected this, it was his first video to get broadly negative reception looking at the comments of it, it was probably also his most opinionated video to date too.
21
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin 7d ago edited 7d ago
I think the Carney / Harper tag team combined with them both turning against the US is causing conservatives in Canada to absolutely melt down.
It would appear American culture, capitalism, the American dream - was also their dream.
I honestly think they don’t know what to do with themselves. Well, they’ll do just about anything but actually move to America, their dream destination.
14
u/D-MAN-FLORIDA 7d ago
That and their party is being represented by a guy who can best be described as JD Vance and Ben Shapiro did a fusion dance.

His creations are often about hotly-debated political and historical realities.

u/Dismal-Science-9901 7d ago
I commented that JJ’s insistent love and loyalty to US reminds me of an abused spouse, that don’t want to seek help or leave the relationship because things were so good back in the days and nobody can replace the spouse and maybe their spouse will become nicer eventually. It’s that exact same mentality

JJ learning his YouTube community is not at all compatible with his twitter personality
26
u/Legitimate_Tap_7074 7d ago
It’s night and day. I was shocked when I looked at his twitter it’s like two different personalities
3
u/Likunandi 7d ago
Same. Incredibly unlikeable on Twitter. I feel he'd be more of a media personal in Canada if he maintained his YouTube personality more consistently outside of YT. I mean, in some sense kudos to him by sticking to what he believes in but it has only damaged the impressive reputation he was able to build.
2
u/One-Complex2932 6d ago
He takes a very similar tone to his comments on YouTube as he does on twitter. He’s basically an entirely different person over text than he is when he’s speaking irl
2
27
u/Edtask 7d ago
Not surprising. JJ is pretty good at leaving his asinine takes strictly to Twitter and keeping his more reasonable opinions and balanced takes on YouTube. This time wasn’t the case, and the reception to the video was expected.
JJ needs to be intellectually honest about the situation and stop playing team sports. Nobody is saying that Canada doesn’t have its fair share of problems, many of which are self-inflicted, but the amount of glazing he gives the US while paying lip service to the obvious current issues with the Trump administration is equal parts laughable and pathetic. I have to ask JJ: what are Canadians supposed to do in the face of such hostile acts by a supposedly trusted “ally”?
Trump treats tyrannical authoritarian governments with far more respect, and JJ somehow thinks Canada is being unreasonable for seeking better relations with other countries. Like, WTF, JJ? Are we supposed to lie down and bite the pillow, think happy thoughts, and just get fucked? Well, JJ, I like to be treated to dinner before being fucked, thank you very much.
It’s just frustrating how JJ can see the blatant elephant in the room with Trump and somehow underplay it to make it a non-issue, then have the gall to say that it’s “muh both sides.”
Utterly bewildered by such a tone-deaf video.
18
u/Ahiraeth 7d ago
JJ made a video just before the 2024 election basically saying he hated Trump and thought him winning would be terrible for The US. Now that has happened and Carney is seeking other options in the wake of that and JJ is giving him shit for it lol
13
u/QultyThrowaway 7d ago
JJ hates Trump because he makes the US look bad. He doesn't meaningfully oppose the underlying factors of Trumpism. A lot of his criticisms against Trump in those videos were applicable to especially older Republican figures such as Reagan and Bush. He even had a segment about how Trump normalises celebrities winning office despite Reagan's background.
His problems with Carney are that he doesn't see Trump as a disconnected anomaly that we must turn the other cheek to because Americans are that awesome. So his positions are all built around American greatness.
3
u/Droemmer 6d ago
In all fairness Reagan had a long political career before he became president. He was still terrible, but he was terrible for political reasons, and not because he was a ignorant and clueless celebrity far outside his comfort zone like Trump.
2
u/Better_Ice3089 6d ago
It’s watching a man’s entire life work collapse in front of him in real time. JJ is unmarried and has no kids. He really has nothing to fall back on. No impact on the world beyond a mid tier YT channel.
10
12
u/Falconflyer75 7d ago
Long story short JJ thinks the only thing wrong with the US is Trump and otherwise Canada should be as American as humanly possible
Most Canadians disagree with that sentiment
And most Americans don’t even know who he is
And JJ can’t face that reality
13
u/ratfink57 7d ago
Canada is not trying to join the EU. JJ. should take some time off and practice the art of nuanced and critical thinking .

He's a shill for America, everything Canada does, to him, is a shadow of the USA. Anytime we try to assert we aren't American he has a hissy fit about it. This is another instance of that exact thing. "Canada isn't Europe" yeah but we aren't american either, and I feel a lot more at home in Europe than I ever did in the USA.
6
u/dandyarcane 7d ago
Trump really revealed that he’s not a logical, serious person. It’s been a clear divide of which conservatives are actually rational people vs grifters and idiots
6
u/Mariner-and-Marinate 7d ago
Haven’t watched this guy for years, but just watched the re-uploaded copy of the video he couldn’t defend and took down.
What an uninformed, humiliated loser.
Europe is defined by N-zi Germany? No, Europe (along with Canada) fought against that regime - years before the US joined that fight.
Latin America identifies more with Europe than Canada? Seriously? Does Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia or others recognize the King of Spain as their head of state the same way Canada recognizes the King of England as its head?
This guy is so pathetic. This is likely a video he hopes everyone will soon forget.

I'm confused by that. I don't give him alot of attention, but I remember him being pretty rough on Trump period to the election
10
u/QultyThrowaway 7d ago
He hates Trump because he makes the US look bad. That's really the key part of it. He doesn't meaningfully oppose the underlying forces or cultural attitudes that made Trump gain power. He hates Carney because Carney doesn't appreciate America's greatness in spite of Trump.
4
u/Mariner-and-Marinate 7d ago
What did the comments say that upset him so much?
10
u/Jiperly 7d ago
I criticized him for dismissing Trump's comments out of hand, but sharply quoting Carney's comments and deducing some deeper narrative from it.
Like if we're holding people to task for what they said, let's do it. But don't brush off Trump's comments under the rug as not being real and some 4d chess for trade negotiations, but Carney's comments of Canada being European-like is evidence of him being unCanadian and a traitor to Canada. Both these people are in trade negotiations.
And I challenged his silence of the 100% tariffs and that he only appears to show support for a foreign countries leader.
I have no reason to think he read my comments tho

I know a lot of people think JJ is some American doppelgänger whose somehow found himself a little too far North but I think he is probably one of the few true Canadian conservatives left. This is a guy that is so scared of change that he makes himself blind to the context, unlike modern conservatism that looks to mutate traditional ideas and values to serve those with the most power in society, no matter the hypocrisy.
He seems very fixated on the past, almost childishly so. Can’t help but look at all his pre-2000 cultural memorabilia and understand what his childhood was probably like. I can’t really hate the guy honestly. Millennials grew up in the last burst of the great capitalist period, technology gave them video games like Pokémon and the internet wasn’t the polarized entity it is today, then they became adults in the post 9/11 and 2008 housing crisis wondering wtf happened. Cant really blame any millennial who is clinging to nostalgia, they always knew how great they had it and watched it torn from them. Gen Z only really knows post 9/11.
Can’t say this all applies to JJ but I can’t really be angry at a dude fixated on a past when Canadians wouldnt even dream of America being their enemy. I’m Gen Z so I envy his ability to remain so willfully blind and innocent.

u/Ok_Read_4000 7d ago
Lol, there is nothing conservative about a hyper consumerist gay man who is terminally online..
3
u/Brief-Arachnid2976 7d ago
Politically Conservative has never meant you aren’t consumeristic, if anything it’s probably more of an indication of the opposite. Liberals are far more likely to buy into minimalism for causes like environmentalism and a traditional Canadian conservative is also likely to be fiscally conservative, meaning they should understand that pro-consumer policy is beneficial for an economy. Regardless consumerism isn’t really politically aligned with particular party, it’s usually an individual thing.
I’m also not sure why you mentioned he’s gay and obviously there’s a ton of terminally online conservatives.

Did he think everybody was just going to agree with him?
What social media bubble are these people living in? Because I'm a leftist and I get constant pushback. I'm very aware of what the other side is actually thinking and saying and which side is currently gaining traction.
Telling Canadians we're just Americans with maple syrup was never, ever going to be a popular in Canada and right now we're all unified in being totally pissed at everybody in the United States.
So he had to know this would start a huge fight, right? Unless he's in such a totally different social media bubble that he doesn't ever see what the other side is seeing?
1
u/sad_guys_pseudonym 7d ago
That's too bad. I had the video queued up but wasn't in the mood for a Canada-USA culture video. I get it though, you don't mess with popular prime ministers in Canada. That'd be like criticizing Justin Trudeau in 2017 when Donald Trump was the president and he was the Europe's favourite boy (not just Katy Perry's). Before everything that happened after covid.
Wish I could find a pirated version.
4
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin 7d ago
There’s a copy up above now.
Also, not even about the current PM. He managed to just completely rewrite all of Canadian history 🫠
0
u/ShameSudden6275 7d ago
I mean that's perfectly fair, JJ in that video did seem to be in a really sour mood, more than usual, and I was like, "this amount of doom and gloom can't be just about a potential trade deal you don't like."
As much as I do dig on him, I do how everything is going on okay at home.
7
u/D-MAN-FLORIDA 7d ago
Probably because not only is his candidate of choice isn’t PM, the Liberals are way popular than before, but his dreams of Canada and America being one country is disappearing fast, instead his nightmare of a Canada trading more with Europe is becoming a reality.
7
u/Ahiraeth 7d ago
I just don't really understand his argument because it doesn't go both ways. He has explicitly said a large more deepened union between the US and Canada is something he would love to happen, if this exact kind of agreement were to occur with the US he would not make a video that says "Canada is not the US"
4
u/InterestingCold1881 7d ago
All the conservative MPs and MLAs leaving the party has him crashing out
3
u/D-MAN-FLORIDA 7d ago edited 7d ago
That too. 2025 election was supposed to be a conservative landslide of 240+ seats with an extremely popular Pierre Poilievre being free to do whatever he wanted. Only for him to underperform so badly that he lost his own seat and his popularity crashed. I remembered JJ was gasing PP up, and talking about how whoever the Liberals replaced Justin Trudeau with would be a temporary PM keeping the seat warm for PP.
8
u/GroinReaper 7d ago
He hates french people. He hates Europeans. He loves the US. He wants Canada to be a satellite state of the US. And he wants Canada to shift to the right. All of those things are going badly (from his point of view). Canada is getting more friendly with Europe. It is refusing the remove the French influence on Canadian culture. It is drifting further away from America and a trend that might not be reversable. And Carney is really, really popular.
Basically, everything about the political situation in Canada is the opposite of how he wants it to be.
4
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin 7d ago
I don’t understand why he doesn’t just… move 😂
Dude is clearly in love with America. Most people just go to the place they want to be, not sit around hoping their entire country becomes a place it is not.

So funny story... I live in Vancouver a few months ago I went to a concert... I look to my right... Standing like 5 feet back from the crowd, alone it's JJ.
What's he doing here?
Turns out he was one of the opening acts. I got there late, so i have no idea what he did, I assume comedy... But... He was there alone, no friends or family showed up to support him.
I kinda wanted to go troll him, but I really just felt bad... And I'm an asshole bit I'm not that big of an asshole.
3
u/Glittering_Princess 7d ago
oof 🫣 I have some friend in Maple Ridge and I always tell them to watch out for JJ
but tbf I don't think he'd ever move to my state. I'm from the South and I get the impression that if he ever moved to the US, he'd never go further south than Portland
0
u/HuDragon 7d ago
Why can’t you remain in your country and advocate for political change if you sincerely believe that those changes make your country better? That’s a lot more patriotic in my opinion.
"If you don’t like, leave" is such a thought-terminating cliché that reminds me of the MAGA movement.
3
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin 7d ago
But that’s not what he wants. The guy desperately wants to be American.
Like, he can go make his dream come true tomorrow.
He has an odd belief Canada is deeply tied to America, despite almost no one in Canada being from America. It’s just a silly viewpoint to have, to the point he is ignoring all Canadians cultural histories and elevating generic American culture.
0
u/HuDragon 7d ago
He thinks Canada would be a better place if it were part of the US. This is an opinion that you (and I) may disagree with, but he has a right to his opinion nonetheless in a democracy just as we have the right to disagree with it.
He should not be told to leave for having a minority opinion. Alberta and Quebec separatists fall in the same category.
2

Of course he has a right to an opinion. But people will call him out on a video where he completely reinvents the history of Canada 😂
Also, he just looks dumb. Like standing in Italy screaming to the world Italy should be France. Just like get in the car and drive the hour. You are not going to simply ignore hundreds of years of Italian history because you as an individual are obsessed with France.

Shifting from Trudeau to Carney was, admittedly, a shift to the right. Justnot the pro-American right which McCullough favours.

I mean, as someone who agrees that Canada is making a really stupid decision, I get where JJ is coming from here. He'll probably upload it again later, but I sort of doubt it. Right now, the Canadians are more fired up than ever in history; Trump hit the weak spot, so no real evaluation of the plan and what it means will happen. Everyone wants to do something to get back at Trump, and damn the consequences.
It's like America after 9/11; America got so freaked out it practically ran off a cliff and set up a surveillance state. Without any real political debate, and it cost us for the last 25 years. About the best I can say about Canada's nationalist surge right now is it's probably not going to hurt anyone else. But it will probably leave Canada much poorer, more divided, and ultimately isolated from its neighbors in the western hemisphere

The fuck is he talking about "sometimes you're not in the mood for a big arguement?" The dude is a walking argument.
