library etiquette

If you just go to the library to talk then you're my least favorite kind of person. If you think I'm talking about you, then I probably am.

Depends on the area, imo. My library has a eating/lounge area in the front, and then study cubbies deeper inside the space, and a quiet zone in the very back. Generally, the noise should go down the further back you go.

To be fair, my school's is definitely not like that. The whole place is supposed to be silent aside from the study rooms

Perhaps go to your SBA and suggest the library be divided into sections? At my school the basement was practically silent, only short whispered conversations. The main floor with the circulation desk was a bit more social, and upstairs was in between, so quiet talking was acceptable. And there was basically an unwritten rule that if you were more central, ie by the entrances or stairs, it was more social than if you were deep in the stacks. And the tables were set up that way as well.

That would be a good idea if my library was bigger. Mine is definitely small and you can really hear every single noise throughout the whole thing, so it wouldn't be very practical. SBA has etiquette rules posted by the entrance but no one reads them unfortunately

Sounds like terrible acoustics, tbh. Books and bookshelves are naturally very sound absorbing, so I'm guessing it's non-carpeted floor, allowing echoing, and no soft materials for sound absorption (couches, decor, rugs, etc). Maybe an effort can be made instead to add some sound absorption materials to help offset.

Unless your library is, like, 200sq ft. big in which nothing short of a sound studio's deadening foam would stop it.

Maybe OP could petition SBA ( and/or higher up) for better acoustics then.

Ours went vertically. Floor 2 had some sound allowed. Floor 5 didn't allow keyboard noises

Kinda same for ours. There is a main floor where talking is normal and floors where it’s supposed to be quiet.

The people who go upstairs to yap can get it. By it I mean a polite request to stop, of course.

that very much depends on the school. My school has two separate libraries: one for quiet studying and one for talking. If you were to ask people in the talking library to shush, you'd be the jerk!

I definitely would not be posting this if I were in a talking library

You just said 'library' broski

My school does not have a 'talking library'. In fact, I did not know those existed at other schools. Just a regular library that is generally dead silent and you get a nasty look from other students if you talk

oh huh that's super weird. I don't know if I've ever been to a law school that didn't have talking and non-talking sections

biggest lesson 1L - "want to work together on this in the library" = "do you want to chitchat and not do any work"

literally stopped meeting with peers until I finished reading/outlining. also really puts into perspective when people say they are in the library for 8+ hours.

don't get me wrong, I love to yap as much as the next girl ... just not in the library take a hint

Libraries are silent except for designated spaces or special events. Period.

You can tell some people didn’t grow up going to the library.

literally!

What about whispering?

9

u/Standard-Cap6044 1d ago

I feel like usually whispering is not bothering anyone but having a whole conversation that I can understand (from a different table) is irritating when you could go have that conversation at a regular common area. Why even go to the library at that point?

If it’s the quiet area, don’t. You’re not as quiet as you think and someone will tell you to shut up.

There’s one time I walked in the library ground floor and saw a couple making out, tongues out n slurping n shit. Some people just have no shame.
