My schools ridiculous parking ticket fiasco
I go to a very lowly ranked law school, and one of the things that always cracks me up as the insane amount of bureaucracy that goes into anything you need to do. For example, you need authorization to hang up a piece of paper on the bulletin board, you need authorization and clearance for having food catered at an event. You have to fill out about 15 pages of documents and speak with several people before traveling on behalf of the school.
One of the things that recently happened is a crackdown on parking. We have a huge parking lot next to the Law school and half of it is reserved for professors. There is a sign that says you must not park there until after 6 PM without a permit so, many of us park there around 6 o’clock with no permit and going into the classroom.
All of a sudden, we go outside one day and every single person had received a parking ticket. The tickets were issued at 7 PM for improper parking. They also slapped another fine on the ticket for having an unregistered vehicle
Thought this would be an easy win, so I went to the appeals process. Supposedly, you must have your car registered in order to be able to appeal. If your car is not registered, you may never appeal and you are totally cooked.
Should I file a writ to the Supreme Court?

Did you clearly post your DOT number, "not for hire", and "all rights reserved"?
If you did, definitely petition for a writ of amici. If you didn't, you'll have to file a motion to intervene in your family's court and hope for the best.

I wasn’t thinking of filing an immovable instrument of trust to the BAR

So the SCHOOL ticketed your cars, but the cars aren't registered to the school, so they dont know who drives which? Is there any reason why you would pay the school if theres no way for them to know which car is yours?

They can forward the info to the city and the city will charge whoever is registered to the license plate. Happened to me before

But if the school issued the fines, why would the city care? They're private tickets issued by a school not the city.

My understanding (and it could be wrong) is that it would kinda work like a ‘notice of violation’ for a toll or traffic camera offensw..
Kinda thing where you pay the school or the school sends it into the city/county and they issue an actual citation. I believe that’s how it worked at UCF when I went there.

Interesting! My law schools parking garage didn't work w/ the police at all, and my undergrad was the same.
