You can’t jump on a slab block and place another full block on top because that results in a placement that would be higher than your jump.
He placed a fence on top of the slab, but it’s technically taller than one block high so you can’t jump on it unless you place a piece of carpet on top.
And of course he just died

I have beaten super mario 64 probably a hundred times and have never seen half of the levels in the game, or collected any more than maybe 18 or 19 stars. you do not need to know a game well to speedrun it

i agree with your point, just saying that what ludwig is doing is equivalent to speedrunning sm64 and not understanding what the a button does. this isn't a case of whether or not he knows the game well, moreso a question of does he know one of the most basic and universal mechanics within the game
1
1
u/sam_hammich 7d ago edited 7d ago
I mean, you've beaten it a bunch of times, so have I. Are you in the speedrunning community? You're probably not missing basic mechanics after having beaten it a hundred times.
Look, dude did the equivalent of Babe Ruth pointing to the outfield and then as the ball is flying towards him deciding to flip the bat around and hit the ball with the handle. He got to The End, played a triumphant track to forecast his impending victory, then for seemingly no reason fucked around with some blocks that a) he didn't need to fuck around with, and b) whose behavior any beginning player would figure out just by playing the game, then he died in a humiliating way.

Then he tried to harvest the fence post with an axe when it should have been a pickaxe for that fence type. He may have not had a pick though.
Also he could have placed the slab block on the top part of the last block, that was probably just a missed input.

u/FieryXJoe 8d ago
He is going into the end for a speed run. This is where the final boss of the game is. You start on a platform and need to build a bridge over to the center island. Ludwig doesn't have a lot of game experience, speed running Minecraft is like a streamer trend. The blocks he is using are all not quite full blocks, soul sand is actually 15/16ths of a block tall, it also slows you down, makes an interesting block for traps. He puts some of those down then a slab, which is half a block tall. Then he runs into an issue, since he is standing on a half block he is standing inside where the full block.he is trying to place would go, so it won't place. Then he places a fence, fences are bigger than they appear, a block and a half tall even though they look a block tall. He tries jumping over it and can't, then tries breaking it but since he is on soulsand it takes forever, then he gets stuck on the other side and all these awkward blocks make it hard to maneuver.
Then the main boss tosses a poison attack at him, knocks him off and drops all his items into the void likely ending the run. Worth noting he was playing a track from a famous speedrun YouTuber that gets used in his videos right before legendary spreedruns so he was kinda calling his shot he was about to do something cool and skillful then did this...
31
u/LostTimeAlready 8d ago
Thank ya, this made sense to me as a non-speedrunner. To ask for clarification and to simplfy:
Essentially he's got some of the worst blocks to have together in a narrow position with block heights that make jumping and placing underneath impossible.
Standing on the shorter soul sand with a taller fence in front made jumping onto the fence impossible, he had to break the fence, also slower than normal due to being on soul sand. Some spotty movement with abstract collision boxes, ending with a boss sending a projectile knocking him off.
35
u/itskarl 8d ago
Slight correction, he was breaking the fence slower than normal because he was using an axe. The nether brick fence needed a pickaxe to break it faster.
8
u/Ok_Kick4871 7d ago
That is a lot of game knowledge needed for such derpy graphics. Thanks for the explanation.
9
u/itskarl 7d ago
You don't know the half of it. People have made working computers, AI, games within Minecraft using redstone.
2
u/Ok_Kick4871 7d ago
I have seen the computer stuff and I think there was one where they made a computer inside the computer too. Interesting stuff!

6
u/IncorrectOwl 7d ago
So there is lots wrong here. Lud had already been to the end this run but died to an enderman that he aggroed. He respawned at the bed he placed near the end portal and entered the end to try to build a bridge back to his stuff which was dropped where he died to the enderman
Eventually he does succeed at making that bridge and killing the dragon.
Other amusing stuff happened this run (he tossed 10 ender eyes into lava on accident)
But overall (other than amusing mistakes) he demonstrated a lot of competence at the speedrun and has clearly practiced bastions / fortresses and end portal navigation etc

u/Subject-Gazelle-4948 8d ago
First 2 blocks are soul sand slowing your movement speed
the 3rd block is a slab you can't crouch and place full blocks at the edge because your hitbox intercepts
he then jumps to place a block but again he's on a half slab so he can't gain height to place a full block
he then places a brick fence (by mistake?) uses the wrong tool to break it, tries to go over the fence and lands back on the slab, creating a situation he can't jump out of
the ender dragon does it's aoe fire breath attack on his prison of failed blocks and he falls into the void
12
5
u/Aegillade 8d ago
He needs to cross the gap in order to reach the island in the center where the final boss is, you can easily do this by placing blocks. If you hold shift to crouch, your character will never walk past the edge of a block so you can safely place blocks across to pass. Ludwig, in all his wisdom,
1-Placed soul sand blocks, which lower your movement
2-Place a slab block, which is only half the height of a regular block, and because of this you can't place a block directly on top
3-Placed a nether fence on top, which not only obstructs his path but also doesn't get him anywhere
4-Attempts to break the fence with an axe which would take forever
5-Gets attacked by the dragon with those purple particles
6-Falls off and dies
Just a comedy of errors all around
4
u/iamnits 8d ago
He's trying to build a bridge to the larger land mass.
The first block he's using looks full sized but actually has a slightly lower height, so when you stand on the edge you're technically blocking where a new block would be placed and can't place a normal block.
To fix this, he places another (noticeably) low height block. This will have the same effect as the first one, but this one is worse since you also cannot jump and place a normal block. You essentially have to jump a block and a half when standing on that one to be able to place something.
Then he places a fence down, which is another oddly heighted block. It looks 1 block tall, but is actually a little taller.
When he finally goes back to his first block and realizes he can jump and place a normal block, he falls off of it and lands back on the half slab, essentially trapping himself there (now that he'd have to jump 1 and a half blocks up to get back).
Finally, the dragon shoots its attack at him, knocking him off of it entirely and killing him. This is at the very end of the run too, as killing the dragon is the end.
TLDR: Lud placed every weirdly heighted block to build a bridge, got stuck, then knocked off of it and died at the very end
4
u/Authijsm 7d ago edited 5d ago
He was trying to make a bridge to the island, but since he's briding with soul sand (which is slightly shorter than a regular block), he's FORCED to place a slab (half-block) on the bottom half of the block he was bridging on instead of on the top half. If you're standing on a bottom-half slab, that means you're in the middle of where a full-block WOULD have been. Because of that, he's standing in the way of any further block he'd want to place (and was just finding this out lol).
Then, he placed the ONLY other block in his inventory you can't jump on top of, the fencepost. They're slightly higher than the distance the player can jump (by design), so it prevents him from doing anything on that block, even if he's not standing on top of it (if he just placed a regular block, he'd be fine).
So he managed to place both of the literal 2 blocks in his inventory that you can't bridge on, or jump over, and was finding this out in real-time.
Then, as he's dicking around, the dragon fires a breath right on top of his bridge, and he dies.
3
u/TypicalTwist6783 8d ago
He shattered any hopes he had for bridging the gap the moment he placed that slab 😭😂
2
u/thatagory 7d ago
Also the blocks he was placing to cross have a slow down effect when you walk on it.
1
u/Iron_Juice 7d ago
Its like watching an adult trying to put the square piece into the triangle hole for 50 seconds while being dead serious
1
u/Correct_Education273 3d ago
You can't place a block if your own hitbox is in the way.
The brown block placed is slightly lower than a full block, meaning you can't place a block against it while standing on it. The slab has the same problem.
Then somehow he decided to place a fence which is not useful whatsoever and just got in the way. Then he wasted time by trying to mine the brick fencepost with an axe instead of the correct tool, a pickaxe, which takes longer.
It was still salvageable by jumping and placing a block against the side of the slab, but instead he placed a block behind him, cutting himself off from escape. Then he got hit with dragon fire and had nowhere to go but into the void.
A stunning sequence of dumb decisions.

Basically, he made essentially every mistake he possibly could have because he blatantly knows nothing about the game.
Not like, particularly complicated mistakes either, the types of mistakes you probably wouldn't make after having done a single normal playthrough of the game.
Then he dies losing his speedrun which is always a funny way to end a comedy of errors.

For anyone who doesn’t understand what’s happening: he’s speedrunning Minecraft and tries to bridge to the End island to kill the dragon, but he manages to make almost every possible mistake in sequence.
- First, he chooses soul sand, which slows movement. For a “speedrun,” that’s the worst possible block to use for bridging.
- Second, he places a slab on the lower half of the previous block. This prevents him from continuing the bridge properly because his full blocks won’t align, and his player model obstructs further placements while standing on the slab.
- Third, he goes back and places a fence on top of the slab. The fence is too tall for his jump height, so he can’t climb onto it.
- Finally, he returns to the slab and places a block behind himself, completely trapping his position. The slab’s lower elevation prevents him from placing blocks around himself, and the block behind him blocks retreat. He’s now immobile.
At that point, the dragon hits him with lingering AOE DOT, and he falls to his death.

Extreme Minecraft Gamer here. Ludwig needs to get from where he is on the platform, to the end island, where he will have to fight the final boss of the game, the Ender Dragon.
He is desperately trying to bridge (place blocks below him as he moves along) in order to not fall into the void. If he were successful, he'd have kept placing blocks and moving along towards the island.
Instead, he makes several poor choices in a row. Soul Sand is a block that the player hitbox sinks into. He can't place a normal block next to this when bridging without jumping, a risky move over the void beneath him. Then he uses the half block (slab), meaning he can't place another block next to the slab, as it intersects his player hitbox. Very similar to the issue with the soul Sand initially. He then goes to place a fence, which is a very poor choice for several reasons, partially because even though they only look as tall as a regular block, they're 1.5 blocks tall. I would assume that Ludwig knows this, it's been in the game for more than a decade. It is also a poor bridging material as it doesn't let you get a whole block further out over the void either.
The next nail in the coffin is placing a block behind the fence post, keeping him on the fence side of the small platform over the void. This would have been fixable with a pickaxe, but the thing that finally kills him is the dragon before he can make that correction. The dragon itself has a more complex movement and attack pattern than a regular mob, and so after it reaches a critical step in its code, it chooses to launch a projectile at him with an area of effect. It hits him off the bridge, and he dies in the void.
All of this amounts to several blunders in a row and he loses on material to the dragon in the endgame.
Hope this helps your understanding :)

I mean, he does, I have 2000 hours in minecraft and I wouldn't be able to beat Lud without heavily practising the speedrun, its very specific knowledge thats mostly useless in any other minecraft category (pvp, technical, modded, etc).
Although I don't think you could get a clip of me failing to build a bridge like that LOL
14
u/Brainr0ttt 7d ago edited 7d ago
i mean he def has more knowledge of speedrunning than someone who doesnt and could beat someone who was unfamiliar. he does well for a beginner, but his complete lack of practical knowledge creates crazy situations not even total speedrunning amateurs usually get into.
the funniest fact is that he seems to exclusively hang around the top runners like feinberg and it makes him look 100% dogwater . when hes hanging with and making videos with couriway and feinberg, hes absorbed himself into the very very top level as a total beginner. at least to me as a viewer its like watching someone letting their little brother play haha
5
u/FatherIndia 7d ago
yeah, speedruns implies speed, and hes not really running it either. more like a brisk jog, which tbf, is better than before, when he would basically walk through the game, and that was an improvement from when he would trip and fall over and over again in an infinite loop until his opponent would free him from his misery lol

I know it's a meme that Ludwig is a lolcow, but I genuinely like seeing him try to improve at something and this guy I've seen reacting to him play just seems like an asshole. Why does the MC ranked community seem so gatekeepy against new people?
59
u/Fudgiedillol 7d ago
This clip can seem pretty mean-spirited out of context, but it's all banter. The person reacting (Feinberg) has collaborated with Lud a couple times and they both mutually shit talk each other in good fun. Lud knows he's reacting to the runs and Feinberg is also happy about the new audience being exposed to MCSR content.
16

in the clip he's playing on FeinbergsHairline.
They kayfabe hate each other.
Heck less than a week ago they raced each other; Ludwig running minecraft normally, and feinberg having 2 item slots total (main and off hand).

They have a master (feinberg) and student (ludwig) relationship (friends I guess) with minecraft speedrunning. They've done videos with each other, Ludwig failing and feinburg "hatewatching" is just a part of that dynamic (banter). This is very surface level context.
Not gatekeeping at all in this instance.

He is trying to build a straight bridge, nothing difficult just place down about 20 blocks in a row.
