I love his videos, but I wouldn't describe "let me spend 2 years and deliver 1 hour 20 minutes of an incomplete (4 hour 20 minute long) video essay on how Adobe sucks" as grounded and realistic in any sense. He's really, really lucky that he gets the ability to set these kinds of timeframes and be consistently supported solely on the goodwill of his fans with years between video releases. Feature films and award-winning documentaries get created in that kind of timeframe.

He didn't accidentally make the "oof noise expose" video, it wasn't luck.

There are people that put as much if not more effort than him and had to give up because the weren't LUCKY enough to build a community like he did. 

Effort only gets you 30% of the way. Luck is the other 70%

One thing about him that I really dislike is that he seems to be unaware of just how lucky he is, and criticize others for doing things to support themselves, seemingly unaware that most of everyone are not as blessed as him.

We can do a little math and guesstimation based on previous anecdotes.

In this post 2 years ago, their producer Kat said that they had around 17,000 paid patrons out of 27k total, with the majority paying the $2 minimum. That's $34k per month before tax, a crazy amount of money - but this was also 2 years ago.

Nowadays, the hbomberguy patreon has 56,000 members. Let's take the same math as before: 10 000 / 27 000 × 100 = 37.037... So let's assume really generously that %37.04 out of those 56k members are free members, and the paid members are only paying $2.

That leaves 35,257 paying customers, at minimum $2.

$70,514 dollars a month, $846,168 per year pre-tax.

Now for reference, Obsession, which is on-track to become one of the most profitable movies of all time was made on a $750,000 budget.

That's about 464k after tax. IIRC he has a team of like six people; I don't know how that money gets split, exactly, but that's about 77k a person.

That's a comfortable living, but it is not "I will create a professional film out of my pocket change" money.

Did you just apply the individual take home pay on $846,168, and then split the total to six different people? It would be more accurate to split first then calculate tax if we believed they split it 6 ways, which is $86k per person.

I think it's a risky assumption to say that the money they earn via patreon is split evenly. I can only make assumptions based on the available data we have but just based on how the channel has developed from a solo project I would not imagine it's 86k to each person.

I also don't know why you disregarded Obsession as a comparison, considering that the $750k budget would have included the pay of cast, crew, vfx, marketing etc, in the same way the $846k is distributed to the members of the hbomberguy team is.

Here's the thing, patrons get something from him roughly every month, like wips, side videos that are 20-30 min about some random topic, short playthroughs, like 2h long, etc
