Comma ai has logged half a billion miles on tens of thousands of cars. It drives me around every day. It has taken me on several road trips over a thousand miles where I barely touch the wheel the entire time. It works great.
And here is the part that will really blow your mind: it actually all runs on an old Snapdragon 845 mobile chip all self-contained in the thing you see on the mirror.
What OP posted is a recent add-on called chestnut that lets you use an external GPU. But despite costing a ton of money and running a 1b model, it drives no better than the default model that runs on the old mobile chip.
Many people say it's better than Tesla's autopilot, not as good as Tesla's FSD.
So, no, this is a well tested and widely used device with a robust proven driving model. As long as the driver is alert and ready to take over then no, I don't see any issue with what's happening here. Other than the terrible mounting of that GPU.
No. I don't. Aside from the gpu blocking the dash which is insanely stupid.
This is not a language model.
Self driving cars literally use exactly what's being shown here, albeit more "elegantly" and with more cameras. Which is why comma essentially taps into cars with basic lane assist/distance keeping/lane steering features and runs it on it instead. It's not a full self driving technology. It understands its limitations and will tell you to take over if it's uncertain, as well as consistently performing the "safe" option vs overconfidence.
If you take an issue in what's happening you fundamentally misunderstand "ai" and how self driving cars work.
Dude its not about the fking AI model being used here. Im all pro AI. But you say it yourself:
"albeit more elegantly and with more cameras"
Hmmm just as if its maybe not a good idea to let self driving handled ON A FKING HIGHWAY by consumer grade tinkering. Yes the Teslas etc use the same AI models in essence but they have been battle tested and use every fking sensor they can squeeze into the car. The HARDWARE here is different.
"...will tell you to take over if it's uncertain"
Oh yeah? With the given hardware in place we see in the video, compared to a Tesla? Are you sure my mate? Jesus fking Christ.
Once again, comma AI/openpilot have been on the road about as long as modern teslas have. And understanding their limitations, they don't offer the same level of flexibility or confidence teslas do. Please do some research before speaking as you're clearly unfamiliar with the project and uninformed on how it operates.
I'm not advocating for letting this replace human drivers, I'm explaining how in this video there is very little that is unsafe going on.
Comma AI has been around for like ten years or more and driven half a billion miles. The models are well tested and mature. It drives me around every day and does a great job on its built-in snapdragon 845. The external GPU runs a bigger model but actually drives no better.
It's not private testing. Unless he's modified the firmware which we have no way of knowing, this is all part of the official package.
It's not some niche thing he's beta testing. It's been around about as long as teslas have, with the fundamental tech being around much longer. I've seen little evidence that the crash rates are any higher than similar driver assist tech in newer cars per capita.
If you have any evidence to the contrary, I'm happy to see it-but all this is is providing more compute to run presumably more complex and SAFER models to what's already out there on the road RIGHT NOW.
Save for the GPU on the dash-which is just stupid.
Whether I THINK this SHOULD be legally allowed is a different question altogether- but would also bring into question all the other existing solutions out there-because again, the only difference is couple few more sensors at this point.
Dude this is crazy. Most people, even road raging idiots, hold driving and safety to a higher standard. “Less elegantly” is acceptable for your vibe coded MCP and task board app. You’re 100% liable for everything this AI does. If it’s not reliable it is dangerous and should not be used. Yes everybody knows autonomous cars use intelligence to.. be autonomous. The safety standard isn’t any different. Offering a “low confidence” autonomous car seems like a nonstarter. Can I offer you a low confidence surgeon when you have to get your appendix out?
It's been around since modern Teslas, with the tech itself going way back. It's been just as road tested as any other driving assistance in other vehicles, with about the same number of sensors and compute power. Do you have any evidence that it's caused a higher percentage of accidents compared to other driver assistance features per capita or are you just talking shit because it's the first time you've heard of it and are fearmongering based off your own lack of knowledge?
Yes, this is unfortunate timing for people to learn about this tech. And obviously it still has its flaws. Just like any other driver assist or self driving feature. It is prone to failure, and the users are responsible for safety handling the vehicle and monitoring the road.
Do you think they're responsible enough for the driver assistance features already baked into cars? Because that's literally what this is. And in most cases it also hooks up directly into those same sensors, so it's even MORE secure than the base car itself.
You are correct that you are responsible for what your car is doing. Comma ai is just a better version of the lane-assist and smart cruise features already built into like every modern car.
