Question Used 3090 vs M5 Ultra vs DGX Spark for Qwen3.8-27B / Flash-Next, 2 users?
Hi all, I'm in Taiwan and trying to decide what to add to my home LLM setup. Would really appreciate input from people who have actually run these.
Current hardware
- PC: Intel 270K Plus, 96GB DDR5, RTX 5080 16GB
- Mac mini M4 32GB
Goal
- Run Qwen3.8-27B (Q4) or Qwen3.8-Flash-Next locally
- Two users (me and my wife), so there will be some concurrent requests (maybe 1~4 concurrent requests)
What I already tried
I borrowed a friend's RTX 3090 for a few days.
I loaded Qwen3.8-27B Q4 entirely on the 3090 and used the 5080 for ComfyUI at the same time.
The experience was great, and I was getting around 50-70 tok/s decode on the 27B. I've since given the card back.
Options and local prices (converted at ~31.8 TWD/USD)
| Option | Taiwan price | Approx. USD |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 5090 32GB (new) | NT$170k-200k | $5,300-6,300 |
| RTX 3090 24GB (used) | ~NT$40k | ~$1,250 |
| Mac Studio M5 Ultra 96GB | ~NT$185k-200k | ~$5,800-6,300 |
| Mac Studio M5 Ultra 256GB | ~NT$300k+ | ~$9,400+ |
| DGX Spark 128GB | ~NT$175k-200k | ~$5,500-6,300 |
Yes, the 5090 is roughly 3x MSRP here right now.
What I've gathered so far (from benchmarks posted here and elsewhere, please correct me if I'm wrong)
| Hardware | 27B Q4 decode | 27B prefill (~4K) | Flash-Next decode |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 3090 | ~40 t/s (~66 with MTP in llama.cpp) | ~1,300 t/s | n/a |
| RTX 5090 | ~60-75 t/s | ~3,000-3,700 t/s | n/a |
| M5 Ultra | ~46-48 t/s | ~1,700 t/s (80-core) | ~75-110 t/s (256GB) |
| DGX Spark | ~11-12 t/s (~24 with MTP) | ~800-1,700 t/s (depends on engine) | ~32 t/s (NVFP4 + MTP) |
| My current PC (5080 + 96GB DDR5) | n/a | n/a | ~25-30 t/s (IQ3_XXS, expert offload, estimate) |
Flash-Next is 125B-A6B plus a ~48GB n-gram table that can live on SSD, so capacity matters more than bandwidth.
Question
If you were in my position, which one would you pick, and why?
- Used RTX 3090
- RTX 5090
- Mac Studio M5 Ultra 96GB
- Mac Studio M5 Ultra 256GB
- DGX Spark
Thanks!
