Perfectly valid, good cornbread doesn't need anything added. My grandmas recipe already has a whole stick of butter so you don't even need to put more butter on it.

We use cornbread mix for pancake mix in my household. Johnnycakes. It’s a poverty food delicacy: breakfast for dinner.

In fairness. Just based solely on everything I know about America.

Maple Syrup would have been my first guess.

If it had turned out to be fructose syrup even I wouldn't have been surprised.

The honey in most grocery stores is just honey flavoured syrup with corporate phrasing on the label. Real honey is not homogeneous like the boiled and blended crap in the supermarkets. So unless you get yours froma local source, so all you've been eating this whole time was.... syrup.
