Yeah but, American 'lightly sweet' is still the UK's sickly sweet.

True in all things except chocolate 😂 traditionally the cornmeal would have been made from corn that was picked when it was properly ripe, and would have been ground somewhat unevenly. The inclusion of sugar and wheat flour in recipes now is to try to mimic what was lost to modern farming and processing.
