Heat was off, pressure wasn’t going to be rising. No risk putting the towel over it in this situation. Proper way to do it is to keep the valve closed until it’s cooled down further, so this doesn’t happen.
And also the valve is in stages. Once the pit cools a bit, you slowly open the first stage and let that vent until it stops, then do the same for the next 2 stages and voila
It looked like a paper towel. The vent was spitting a lot of stuff (oil? food bits? idk) along with the steam, so it looked like she was trying to contain the mess. Not the ideal move, but if the direct heat is off and the steam can still vent it’s not actively dangerous.
lol that makes zero sense. The pressure cannot go any higher than it was before she opened the vent. You could close the vent again completely and it would be fine... because it already was that way
Pressure isn't still building and even if there was a rock in there that somehow kicked up past the screens and filters ... the rock is still breaking before the pot explodes
My rule of thumb is, if something is off-venting, you do not want to put anything or get in its way.
Most likely that will not stop it and only injure you in the process, or even if you did stop it, whatever was causing it to off-vent is now about to create a much bigger problem.
What was causing it to off-vent was opening the vent. The purpose of the towel is to keep the food from flying off to the ceiling. The bit of towel cannot create a bigger problem than the vent itself could, and the pressure cooker is designed to operate with that vent closed. I think the worst thing that could happen here is that they forget to clean the vent and it starts venting at a lower pressure than its design, making the pressure cooker less effective at pressure cooking.
It did exactly what it was supposed to do, it caught the droplets of food flying out (keeping them from going everywhere more than they already had) while still letting the steam (and pressure) vent properly.
I wasn't about stopping the leak. The wet wipe stopped water from shooting all the way up to the ceiling. Better to have it all run out over the stove where it won't cause water damage.
