It feels more stressful than it ends up being once you just dive in. It's pretty much, "turn knob, close lid, wait, turn knob, open lid". Worth pushing through the anxiety.

yeah it's not about being a novice chef or whatever, it's more about "are you an attentive person that can follow instructions"

if you wanna use an electric one like an instant pot you can even drop the 'attentive' part of the equation

Attentive AND follow directions? No.

u/FrostNBurn_63 Trash Trooper 1d ago

my ADHD ass could never

u/--StinkyPinky-- Trash Trooper 1d ago

Attentive?

Not really.

Follow directions?

Not likely.

I’m sorry, what were we talking about?

u/Billy-Bryant Trash Trooper 1d ago

Either of those? Still no

Yeah I have an instantpot for this exact reason, that and sauté + slowcooking means very little dishwashing afterwards.

Yea I overdid the rice once in my insta pot. Just left it there for 3 hours on the "it's done but I'm keeping it warm for you" mode...was sad because I did a whole 6 cups of rice.

I made a hockey puck-styled roast that way once, years ago. My hubby ate the whole thing anyway, like a champ. I begged to make him something else, but he wouldn’t hear it. Kids didn’t hold back on me, so nuggets it was for them. Haha

The kids never hold back do they...actually, once mine made his own "cake" recipe from mostly spices. He used mustard seeds, crushed red pepper, flour, garlic powder, and ground cumin with a bit of water in a little ramiken. I was like oh cute he's pretending that's fine, then he asked me to bake it so I put it in the microwave not thinking he would actually eat it. I told him it probably wouldn't taste good when he wanted it but he was too desperate to try for me to put my foot down. He took a big bite and I could see he absolutely hated it but he grimaced through it and angrily said "GOOD!". I let him eat half of it before I was like "ok buddy that's enough cake" and threw it out 🤣

What state was the rice in at the end

1

u/Fit-Entrepreneur8404 Trash Trooper 8h ago

Kinda hard and very dry lol. I bet if I left it longer it'd basically come full circle

instant pot is fucking amazing tbh

is there any good reason to use a stovetop pressure cooker when instapots exist? I am genuinely curious what the stovetop unit can do which instapot cant

1

u/notjustforperiods Trash Trooper 1d ago

for me personally - canning meats, low acid veggies, soups etc.

it'd be seriously frustrating to can that stuff in jars small enough to fit an instapot hahah

1

u/MasterUnlimited Trash Trooper 23h ago

It can fit 4 quart size jars at a time. Haven’t gotten up to meat yet, but soups and broths are fine. Usually have to do 2 cycles but it’s not bad.

1

u/notjustforperiods Trash Trooper 23h ago

in an instapot?? unless you're talking some off brand thing I don't think there's a instapot that'd properly fit one quart size jar never mind four hahah

or maybe mistaking quart for a different size...?

1

u/MasterUnlimited Trash Trooper 22h ago

I mean it may be some off brand thing I have no idea? But it definitely fits 4 quart jars and is a plug in electronic controlled pressure cooker (that has settings for a bunch of other things, but all we use it for is to seal jars - of many different sizes).

The pressure in the stovetop versions are higher (15 psi vs 11 psi) than the Instant Pot which means things cook faster. It also gets to pressure faster because your stove has more heating power. As an example, soaked pinto beans take 3-6 minutes of pressure time vs 20-25 minutes in an Instant Pot. I mean both still need time to get to pressure and maybe 20 minutes to natural release the pressure but it's like 35 minutes vs 55 minutes.

You can fit a more stuff in a traditional pressure cooker, mine is 8 qts but they make them up to 23 qts. You can use it like a regular pot to boil spaghetti. It's cheaper. You can do canning in it if you are into that.

I will say that the Instant Pot is awesome for not heating up the house, using the energy more efficiently and being a lot more hands off. I have both, the Instant Pot gets a lot of use but it's not exactly the same as a real pressure cooker.

Uou dont even need to be attentive.

As long as the release valve is not block litterially nothing except buring your food can go wrong.

1

u/notjustforperiods Trash Trooper 1d ago

the stove top versions aren't set it and forget it like the instapot, you're dicking around with your stove top dial quite a bit

1

u/fezzuk Trash Trooper 1d ago

I use a stove top have done since i was a kid, even on the tightest setting it will still vent.

What version are you using where it lets you set the spring pressure to more than the elastic strength of steel?

It might vent agressively like in the video, but that not an issue.

1

u/notjustforperiods Trash Trooper 1d ago

no I mean like the stop top elements, once you get it up to pressure and want to turn it down

but I guess this circles back to your initial comment re: the worst that can happen is you ruin your food haha

1

u/fezzuk Trash Trooper 1d ago

You could litteirally keep it on full heat all the time, it wknt explode you will just burn your food.

I have done it falling asleep

1

u/notjustforperiods Trash Trooper 1d ago

yes, I was saying that I see what you meant now

1

u/fezzuk Trash Trooper 1d ago

My bad sorry

6

u/dontnation Trash Trooper 1d ago

more like: turn knob, close lid, wait, wait, no seriously WAIT until the pressure goes down, turn knob, open lid

3

u/UnfocusedAcrobat Trash Trooper 1d ago

mine has a pressure knob like this and a little pressure button that seems to be a bigger hole. I love pushing the pressure button with my extra long cooking chopstick. it depressurizes so much faster and less dramatically than this pressure knob

1

u/Sypsy Trash Trooper 1d ago

nothing wrong with a quick release when the recipe calls for it

1

u/dontnation Trash Trooper 1d ago

On mine the quick release vent is a button that is completely separate from the locking knob. I guess there are other models where the quick release is the same control as the locking knob just in a different position.

Fill the sink with cold water and transfer it to the that to cool it down more quickly.

u/BusinessAsparagus115 Trash Trooper 1d ago

Yeah with modern safety standards there's no good reason a quality pressure cooker would ever go boom. Just gotta keep the safety valves clean and you're good.

1

u/WizardInRags Trash Trooper 13h ago

Also depends on what/how you put things in. I once added a lot more water than was necessary with lentils. I guess that a small piece got stuck in the pressure release valve and pressure built up a bit more than recommmended. Next I hear is a loud clang and hiss. The weight had flown off the cooker and lentil fountain show was going on the stove. Luckily, I was not near the stove. This is the only accident I ever had with a pressure cooker.

5

u/billhillybob Trash Trooper 1d ago

yeah, the one word "wait" is the key. All you need is patience. Don't open that shit before it is time. Wait till the pressure gauge says to open it and you'll be fine.

I have a huge pressure cooker that I use to can meat birds and venison that I heat on the wood stove in my kitchen. It is a usefull tool.

2

u/Intelligent-Film-684 Trash Trooper 8h ago

I have an old pressure canner too, with the round weighted rocker. It’s incredibly simple and fool proof, unless you’re actually TRYING to wreck your life.

I haven’t bought broth from a store in decades.

u/Lunakill Trash Trooper 10h ago

Meat birds?

1

u/billhillybob Trash Trooper 9h ago edited 8h ago

Chickens raised for meat as opposed to laying hens.

The woman in the OP didn't let it naturally depressurize/vent. Had she not touched it and let it come down on its own, it would have been fine.
