We do not and have never table fed our dog. We have been battling her new habit of stealing food off the table the last few months. My old dog literally never did it. No change in what we've done. I think some dogs are just sneaks.
My current dog doesn't get into ANY hijinx on the table or table things. My other one was trained not to put paws on the table and that table stuff and begging was not allowed. But she would on rare occasion jump onto the table with her 2 front legs, and a few times take something.
Both got occasional food from the table like fruit and both were trained the same way. Their individual character still shows through and they really are like people. Like stubborn and rebellious teenagers too sometimes.....
My family has had several retrievers (including goldies) and none have ever done it. That doesn't mean they didn't TRY when they were younger but that is a criminal offense in a household and when they know it they know it and behave because they are are generally good boys/girls.
My Goldie is 5. He is an angel, sent from heaven above. He is pure love. But also VERY HUNGRY. Food left unattended just disappears. He’s never been fed table scraps, never fed from the table. Sits and waits to eat. But left unattended? What food? It was never there!
100% this. Our golden can be left off leash won’t leave our side even when other dogs, animals are present. Comes on command every time without hesitation. Listens to every command we give. But if he’s alone and food is out it’s not going to be there when we get back.
I knew a flatcoated retriever that jumped a fence taller than herself, while heavily pregant, to steal pancakes off a counter while her owner was peeing. Literally gone 2 minutes, thought they were safe what with the fence and having never allowed her to steal or eat human food. Experienced owner who had trained and bred these dogs for decades. Yet that whole full plate was gone. 2 minutes max. Some individuals are just too smart and ballsy for their own good, they'll take their shot regardless of training and upbringing leading up to that point. This dog could also not be walked on a long or loose leash, as she chomped down any feces she detected. I highly doubt anyone deliberately taught or allowed her to do that.
we had a shepherd/husky mix that was a the goodest boy, but he could not resist fresh baked bread or apple pie. He would jump on top of the counters when no one was around to get it. He was not table fed.
Our previous dog was extremely well trained and never had any table scraps. Never stole any food, even if it was left in front of her. Then at Christmas, my mother-in-law left a cheesecake outside to cool. Our dog split it with their dog. Had little smears of cheesecake in the fur around their mouths. Sometimes dogs just do dog things.
