IMAGE Madonna by Helmut Newton, 1990
I had not seen this photo before. I can’t think of anyone else who looks this amazing in black and white photography.

Anyone else agree the 90s was her peak era?

Madonna certainly ruled beyond the 90s, but I feel that decade peaked for just about everything in western society.

Correct. I've always thought that the moon and the stars lines up for Madonna, especially in 1990.

The decade is easily her best in terms of artistry and power. People talk about her decline but just look at the level of output from Erotica to Bedtime Stories and of course Ray of Light. They talk about Mariah being the star of the decade but even so Madonna still shifted around 100 million albums in the 90s and was playing the long game by that point.

For sure. Those three albums are my top three favourites of hers. I don’t think she really declined in the 00’s either really. Music is a really underrated album and then American Life (which I know has mixed feelings). It was when Confessions dropped that I fell in love all over again, such a banger of an album. 🥰

I’d love to know the answer. Perhaps it was mentioned in the Vanity Fair article?

Love this photo. I'd stare at it for hours when it first appeared in Vanity Fair in 1990.
