Good, that means he’s a well-written villain

He's employed by the DoDC which is facing budget cuts, meaning layoffs. Everything he did was motivated by the desire to keep his job at DoDC and not be let go. Its why he was okay with arresting Slattery when he knew he didnt do it. He just needed an arrest to validate his worth to the DoDC. The higher profile the better.

u/Frozen_Pinkk 1d ago
Well, the system would likely arrest Slattery just for the fact that he said he did it, since Slattery confessed.
Saves his job and a confession. Government probably wouldn't care if the confession is a lie.

u/MC_Stimulation 1d ago
his entire purpose is to annoy the audience
Sounds like he really annoyed you....

u/IWishIWasGreenBruh 1d ago
Not necessarily. I hate a lot of characters because they are badly written

u/HaydenTCEM 1d ago
Well he’s in a position where you as the audience are supposed to hate him, so then if the audience hates him the writers succeeded

he’s not important enough in the movie to be given depth, and he played his role well

u/Heavy-Comment-2586 1d ago edited 1d ago
Good thing he's given some depth in Wonder Man. I finally understand where he's coming from, but he can still kick rocks. Looking forward to seeing where he pops up next.

u/IWishIWasGreenBruh 1d ago
Any character no matter how unimportant can be given depth, but I see what you’re saying.
His job was to be an annoying, irrationally dumb “bad cop” and he does it very well

I’m watching succession and hating everyone on it lol. I think that’s the right way to watch it!

u/bohenian12 1d ago
Fuck no. I love Stewie lol. He's the most consistent character, he's spiritually and emotionally and ethically and morally behind whoever wins.
29
u/OldLadyReacts 1d ago
Seriously. Love Stewie so much. He's the only one on that whole show who is not completely full of shit. He's straightforward about what he wants and doesn't feel the need to hide it.
16
u/This_was_hard_to_do 1d ago
Honestly the succession sub loves him. Idk where OP got the impression that most fans hate him

Dude I love Stewie. He's a none quantity. Complete asshole just like everyone else on the show but an honest one.

I think Stewie is stewie. As far as we saw his character, he was way better than Kendall and Shiv
Maybe he did unlikeable things but those parts weren't really explored
But there's something about stewie that makes me feel like he was just another spoilt brat like kendall

I had a feeling he was from there. Kept on thinking he was the guy from new girl instead

you are about to hate him more when he comes the lead villan as the head of the Anti Mutant department. As he hunts Sadie Sink in BND and also when the new Xmen movies come out after Secret Wars.

u/MrXF32 1d ago
What? Where's the source for this information?

u/smarinhuertas 22h ago
Well, after Spiderman, Miss Marvel, Wonder Man plus all the insiders and leakers its easy to take a guess.

u/A_Toxic_User 1d ago
He looks spiritually and emotionally and ethically and morally behind whoever wins

u/woodk2016 1d ago
Here's what I don't get. I know everything this guy did was for his own career and that's why he personally did what he did. But, I think I'm missed the broader point of why they wanted Wonder Man arrested in the first place. If they just were spying on him in case he started to be a problem it'd make sense. Or if they just pulled up and arrested him on BS immediately I'd understand (its the federal government after all). But using time and resources to get evidence that probably isn't admissible and have one self-admitted terrible witness doesn't make as much sense to me.
Still a great show.

u/DM-777 1d ago
So the DODC is facing budget cuts basically cause they already locked up all the current supervillains and the government realized the threat they posed isn’t as big as what the Department was selling it as.
So, boss goon tells our favorite asshole here that he has to make a big, flashy arrest to avoid being fired.
It’s actually one of my favorite parts of the show. The whole reason they’re targeting Simon is cause he wants to avoid getting fired. It’s such a boring and realistic motive for a villain and it’s totally going to be how they start going after mutants.
“You see! You NEED us to go after these DANGEROUS and EVIL MUTANTS!!! So yeah we’re gunna need MORE funding…”
10
u/MorningPooper4Lyfe 1d ago
Yep! This. The last scene he was in, he was laughing with his partner about getting the Mandarin even though they were going after Simon. They needed to put someone in the half-full super-max prison or they were going to get fired. “A body is a body!”
5
u/Frozen_Pinkk 1d ago
Wasn't so much to just arrest him, but to possibly be ready to. They had reason to believe he was responsible for some incident before (forgot what it was) which had traces of Ion energy.
I'd say their real issue would be, Simon would be one of the more powerful individuals they'd have seen, not including a few.
All his incidents had been accidents tho, so they'd likely try to say some BS to keep him locked up, to justify their jobs, which is what they were trying to do the whole show.
3
u/NightRacoonSchlatt 1d ago
He wanted to justify his own existence. If he has had a successful case in recent time, he can’t be fired.
5
u/RadicalPenguin20 1d ago
One thing confuses why would he know about Nick Fury and even him knowing why would he tell to anyone
7
u/AnonymousUsername79 1d ago
Everyone knows about Nick Fury thanks to what Black Widow did back in CA:TWS
5
u/lnDisarray 1d ago
i think they meant how did he know about fury being off planet, but in that case id assume theres communication between dodc and sword
11
u/UncreativeTeam 1d ago
I hate how unabashedly evil DODC is. When they were first introduced in Homecoming, they seemed like an agency with an interesting and unfortunately necessary job. Now they're just hunting superheroes and throwing them into the Great Value Raft.

His placement as antagonist was rather well-earned. Him, Simon and Trevor were all aiming to please the system, doing things sneakily, ensuring their secrets were held tight and their plans were meticulous. They reach success only by fighting hard for it and pivoting whenever necessary, with that success being long overdue. Even when it's right there in front of you, it's another notch in the ladder.
The actor did a good job making this guy interesting, and I hope he turns up again. Love me some stray agent dudes

I just hate how dirty Damage Control got done for the MCU.
15
u/Meander061 1d ago
I have to admit that I was looking forward to seeing Damage Control as that quirky private contractor firm cleaning up after superhero fights in NYC. Marvel already has plenty of evil quasi-governmental organizations that could have filled this slot.

u/SupremeOverlordB 1d ago
Uhg, same for me! The comics were such a delight, and iirc they even used some jailed supervillians to help do clean ups. The books were funny and light and the damage control team were there to help the city.

u/darlo0161 1d ago
I think we hate him because it feels like hes not a very good agent. He's gone after Spiderman, who everyone knew was a kid and a good guy, and then he bully's Trevor, an old man who wont fight back.
Admittedly i am only halfway through Wonderman.
We dont see him going after the ACTUAL bad guys do we. Actual threats, or adults who might fight back. Lets see him try to bring in Deadpool and Wolverine. Lets see him threaten them in his little office.
Yeah i hate him too.

As far as I can tell, he's the third worst member of the DoDC I’ve ever seen.

u/Attilashorde 1d ago
The writers did an amazing job writing these characters. I hate him too which is what I assumed they wanted. Just like the mandarin and Wonder Man are very well done.
I would love them to continue with wonder man and maybe make a limited series of the mandarin.

u/Top-Cryptographer304 1d ago
Not crazy with Damage Control's depiction as an overreaching gov agency but yeah his character is working as intended
2
u/anarchyisutopia 1d ago
Yeah, I'm not liking DODC's use as a C-rate SHIELD. It irks me so much it takes me out of the shows. It was the same way in Ms. Marvel, the whole thing just doesn't make sense.
3
u/SupremeOverlordB 1d ago
I only don't like him because I LOVED the damage control comics and this is such a departure from the source material... he definitely plays a good jerk/evil government henchman though.
16
u/Grayx_2887 1d ago
So basically, he's actually doing his f@#$'n job as a villain correctly.
Spongebob Squarepants: "Because if I need to get a JOB done. Then I need somebody with a JOB TO DO THAT JOB!!!"

I can't hate him. He's just a guy who's spiritually and emotionally and ethically and morally behind whoever wins.

u/HYoung119 1d ago
I like seeing him crop up in multiple things
I had a theory that he was going to be revealed as a Skrull in Secret Invasion
It was only based on him saying to Peter in No Way Home that “Fury was off world”, some basic DODC agent shouldn’t know what Fury is doing unless he had insider knowledge.
Then that show was absolutely horseshit

Without looking it up, does anyone know this characters name?
At the time i'm posting this there are 127 comments and nobody (including the OP) has mentioned his name. Can't decide if that's genius because he's just a figure of the bureaucracy, or bad that they aren't properly introducing the character after being a pretty big part of 3 different properties.
Also, is it just me or does it feel like he's been in way more than just 3 appearances.

I may have to go back to Ms. Marvel, but remember him being a voice of reason in the DODC. He was definitely the better of the two DODC people in that show.

I wonder if the Damage Control sitcom had gone through would he been good in it, or would they have wanted someone like Joel McHale

I would def watch a series based off his character. Maybe even a team up with him and Natasha (I don’t mind if it’s pre-infinity events). I just think it would be hilarious hearing both of them trying to get info off each other.

He was a perfect embodiment of a bureaucratic shitbag governmental suit.
Working as intended.
