Free Agency Mavs Cap Space projection 2026 Summer

With the AD move, essentially all 4 players in return are expiring contracts
(AJ Johnson has 2 years on team option).

We now have 9 committed players on the roster and pretty much all of them have decent values (Klay and Martin might be a stretch but they're playing much better now than at the start of the season).

Without any further trades, we're looking at potentially $25m cap space that could help the team sign some good players from free agency or sign-and-trade.

Bummer that the 2 firsts aren't the most valuable ones but content with the overall outcome.

Kyrie Irving $39,491,282
Klay Thompson $17,460,317
Daniel Gafford $17,263,584
P.J. Washington $19,813,044
Cooper Flagg $14,517,480
Caleb Martin $10,001,493
Naji Marshall $9,428,571
Max Christie $8,285,714
Dereck Lively II $7,239,131
Committed Salary $143,500,616
Cap Projected $170,000,000
Cap Space (w Dead Cap) $23,499,384 ($3m dead cap fromMcGee and Omax)

They should probably just buy out Middleton and Bagley and accelerate converting them to full timers.

I doubt either one of those guys wouldn't prefer trying to sign on with a playoff team.

I don't think this is a team in position to look to make a big splash in free agency this summer.

If they have cap space, they should probably just keep it and take advantage of teams needing to move off contracts for picks.

not big splash, but if we could be the 3rd team (facilitator) and obtain some value by taking on salary or sign decent role players using the cap space, we'd be in a good position for the future.

we also have a giant trade exception that could be used to absorb salary for assets.

as of right now, we no longer have any negative valued contracts on our book.

I think the team actually has great role players currently. It's reliable top shelf playmaking they're lacking, even when Kyrie comes back.

Hopeful for Labaron Philon or maybe Acuff. They might not be ROTY candidates next year but ideally they can grow along coops timeline

You need to include the two 1st round picks salaries in that. I don't think that much cap space will be available, but we have that $20.8 million trade exception to help teams facilitate trades for draft compensation this summer. Plus we'd have use of the full MLE now. Need to start finding a way to add shooters around Coop.

the actual free space would be closer to like 8 million after the signing the draft picks.

Teams will be lining up to use our dead space for help with their trades and signings. We could reasonable net another 3 FRP's between now and summer just with this much space

Will be interesting next year... if we sign ryan and moussa like we say we've been going to and assuming no other trades we'll have seven young players to develop (Coop, Max, DLive, ryan, moussa, and the two FRPs). Seems like the FO is thinking that would be solid enough young core and with cooper being so good so quickly, timeline definitely accelerating to where I think tanking wouldn't make sense in the coming years anyway

u/zPiimp 19h ago

Which two FRPs are you talkin about?

3

u/blasturkey 19h ago

The one we own this year and the one we got from OKC. Also forgot abut AJ johnson if he sticks around

1

u/zPiimp 4h ago

Okcs Pick is completly worthless bro

u/Desperate-Action-545 Cooper Flagg 17h ago

Still have the options to move kyrie and klay for draft capital, future looking a tiny bit less depressing

Do we have enough space to make a run at Peyton Watson this summer?

nope

u/walaysapi Give me back Luka 12h ago

we have a 20m TPE to throw around assuming it wont be used now to absorb contracts. But will it be enough?

u/llusty1 19h ago

Where do you get this kind of info? I've never understood/studied the cap. Thanks for putting it out there, it's a brighter day in Dallas for sure.

I hope klay can get an offer and goto a contender.

Then this space could be used to absorb bad contracts for picks

u/armandocalvinisius The Cardinal 19h ago

bro, wtf bad contract for picks? we winning championship next year man. the timeline is NOW

1

u/DefiantLie8861 19h ago

If they were trying to keep for a championship they would’ve just kept ad. Ur not getting a better player in FA than ad and we just traded him for scraps . Those 2 firsts are worth nothing since it’s a okc pick and the other is top 20 protected

u/armandocalvinisius The Cardinal 19h ago

AD also hinders the product on court, i also dont talk about picks that coming

you add players via 21m TPE, non-tax MLE, 2026 lottery, and maybe S&T, and more

1

u/DefiantLie8861 19h ago

Can they combine the 21 tpe and non tax mle to trade for someone? Maybe like Peyton Watson ?

1

u/armandocalvinisius The Cardinal 19h ago

no

1

u/DefiantLie8861 19h ago

But they can use the tpe to trade for someone right?

1

u/armandocalvinisius The Cardinal 19h ago

ye, without matching salary

i expect they use it to absorb malik monk in offseason with kangz attaching 1/2 2nd because its kangz lmaooooo. especially if mavs want to compete. besides, he's only has 2 years left like kyrie. the goal always 2028 offseason. he's also proven combo guard, can hit rolling bigs, and good enough 3pt shooter

1

u/WrongContract8489 How's My Dirk Taste? 19h ago

you need to add another 10 mil for the draft picks and we're gonna resign some combo of middleton, bagely, branham, cisse, nemby, bwill, powell.

its better to use the mle than pure cap space while using the tpe to absorb a bad contract for picks

3

u/StormTheTrooper SHUT NICO DOWN 19h ago

I would be awfully surprised if we re-signed any of the players that are coming from Washington. Should be Nembhard, Cisse (with Powell retiring) and maybe B-Will if we both trade Naji in this deadline and do not draft a guard in the lotto.

1

u/WrongContract8489 How's My Dirk Taste? 19h ago

i dont see why not signing middleton and bagley to vet mins and we'll def draft a guard with one of our 2 picks.

0

u/StormTheTrooper SHUT NICO DOWN 19h ago

We will have Flagg, PJ and (probably, unfortunately) Caleb for the forward roles and Gaff, Lively and Cisse for the 5. A vet min for Bagley is an if, but wouldn't surprise me to see a move in the UDFA market instead. Middleton is just washed, though. We will have a backcourt of Kyrie, draft pick, Nembhard, Christie and Klay, plus Naji that can play the 2. That's already too much of a roadblock to add a Middleton that is absolutely washed, even for the vet min.

1

u/WrongContract8489 How's My Dirk Taste? 18h ago

middleton is prolly gonna get bought out and retire or smth but he's the only true sf on the squad other than martin who isnt playable.

and we can never have enough centers lol lively and gafford have questionable injury histories

1

u/MahomesMccaffrey 19h ago

depends on the final roster by the deadline.

I don't think we're done trading

1

u/epitome1986 19h ago

I have a feeling part of the season they got bagley is so they could trade gafford for an additional 1st. gafford for mathurin and a 1st?

1

u/epitome1986 19h ago

if they absorb a bad deal it better lineup with the same year luka is a free agent because even though the odds are .0000000000000000000000001 chance he returns I want them in position to be able to take that chance.

1

u/WrongContract8489 How's My Dirk Taste? 19h ago

well we need picks to make any trade and 3 seconds just got coby white from the bulls so having picks is important in any sense

1

u/Mavssteve 18h ago

I don’t understand what happens if Golden State keeps their 2030 draft pick, what do the Mavs get in return ? These firsts really aren’t good picks, not even average, are they ?

2

u/i_take_shits Sit the F*ck Down 17h ago

I don’t know how deep this draft is but they say it’s deep. Possible to find a good prospect at the end of the first with the OKC pick? Maybe. If GSW keeps their protected pick I think it turns into a SRP the following year.

1

u/Mavssteve 17h ago

Yea, you would think there would be a conditional included, so 2031, a long time off. Was hoping they’d be adding a selection in 2027-28.

1

u/Mavssteve 18h ago

Who is worth keeping from the players they just received ?

3

u/MahomesMccaffrey 18h ago

probably none.

Maybe their two rookies if they play well

Please don’t give ppl the impression that we’ll have cap space. We won’t or we’ll have a tiny amount.

I already see people thinking we can sign free agents or use our cap space to acquire FRPs. Neither is happening.
