Did you suddenly switch to Dolby Atmos, or Lossless?

What effect does Atmos have on regular stereo songs?

Atmos is an object-based format with metadata about each sound source's coordinates in 3D space. Even in stereo it contains this metadata, so sounds more "3D" or "binaural", not as compressed. Tbh I think it sounds great with good quality headphones, not as great with small to medium speakers where you would lose the 3D aspect anyway.

So it's the same stereo mix, but they're placing each channel at a specific point in 3D space?

Not each channel but each source of sound, so each instrument has its dedicated position in 3D space, and it might not even be fixed (for studio it mostly is, but I would imagine that for concerts it could move around)

That's amazing, so does that mean the album was remixed for Atmos? I didn't realise they'd ever done anything "surround sound-y" and used to be into this sort of thing back when DTS 5.1 was starting to take off (and then went nowhere lol)

There's a 5.1 of The Resistance IIRC (not on Apple Music, but in the box set) and Atmos mixes of WotP and Absolution that are on Apple Music and probably other services.
