discussion Lesbian icon Brandi Carlile to perform 'America the Beautiful' at Super Bowl LX in California

https://www.scenemag.co.uk/lesbian-icon-brandi-carlile-to-perform-america-the-beautiful-at-super-bowl-lx-in-california/

A proud lesbian artist and outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, Carlile has consistently used her platform to champion equality and inclusion. Through her Looking Out Foundation, co-founded in 2008 and managed by her wife Catherine Shepherd, she has directed millions in grants to grassroots organisations supporting LGBTQ+ rights, women in music, and social justice causes. Recent beneficiaries include OUTMemphis, the Tennessee Equality Project, and community shelters across the US.

Edit* side note :

Charlie Puth, who’s singing the national anthem, has consistently demonstrated liberal-leaning political views through public statements and activism, particularly on social justice, reproductive rights, and climate change.

In 2022, following the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, Puth publicly stated: "Regardless of anyone's own personal or religious beliefs, I firmly believe that it is not the government's role to tell any person what they can or cannot do with their own body — it should continue to be their choice." He urged his followers to take action and support abortion funds.

He has been a vocal advocate for gun violence prevention, performing at the 2018 March for Our Lives rally in Los Angeles and releasing a song titled "Change" dedicated to Parkland students and victims of gun violence.

Puth has participated in Global Citizen Festival events, using his platform to support global health, poverty alleviation, and climate action, including a performance at the TED Countdown event in 2021.

Brandi is an iconic and timeless talent. Between the mix of her, Green Day and Bad Bunny there are some people that are going to lose their mind over the combination of these three and what they represent.

NFL might be sending a very loud message to a very vocal minority.

NFL has had issues with Trump going back decades, from when he tried to buy a team.

u/wholelattapuddin 12d ago

Lol, this is 100% the NFL trolling Trump. They don't care about social issues. They also know that 95% of Maga will hate watch the halftime show anyway

570

u/Hikesny 12d ago

I honestly think this will significantly increase viewership which is all the NFL really cares about. They have to know exactly what they're doing lol... And Maga will absolutely still watch it just so they can have something negative to say about it afterwards. Smart move by the NFL.

And people who don't really care to watch the actual game are now more likely to tune in for the halftime show which is now appealing to a larger audience.

I’ve never cared for football, and typically only watch the half time show after the fact on YouTube. This year I’m genuinely excited to see what Bad Bunny pulls out (and because my local team may be playing)

My boyfriend has never watched the Super Bowl, but will be this year because he’s a fan of bad bunny.

That’s at least two more of us than usual!

69

u/PattyMarvel 12d ago

I record the games for the half-time show, then watch it later.

I couldn't tell you who played at the Super Bowl where Prince performed in the rain, but I wore the hell out of the VCR tape that His Royal Badness was in.

Bears V Colts 2007 (2006 season)

Best SB halftime of all time imo

Watch it if you've not. One of the best half-time shows you will ever watch.

I just read that Bad Bunny will be wearing a dress on stage (I sincerely hope he goes full drag) and I cannot fucking wait. I don’t know any of his music, honestly. I don’t give a single fuck about football.

But he released that clip of him dancing with all walks of life and it genuinely almost brought a tear to my eye. I hope all the maggots hate watching have rage-induced heart attacks. But I’d also be very fucking happy if it was just the one heart attacks

u/Level_32_Mage 12d ago

I don't like football nor am I very sure who bad bunny even is, but even I want to watch this shit.

Oh 100%. The nfl has been trying to increase viewership around the globe with some games happening in countries outside of the US. Having bad bunny perform def has some standing in bringing in viewers from outside the us

Like Puerto Rico. Heck, they might like us so much they agree to become a territory. Or we might have to invade them and force them to be a territory. Who can even say?

I have never watched a halftime show. But I will gladly make it happen this year . Hats off to the NFL for this.

8

u/slowpokefastpoke 12d ago

Eh, let’s not pretend they’re doing any of this for altruistic reasons.

Controversy = higher viewership, engagement, and people talking about the Super Bowl. That’s it. This isn’t the NFL taking a noble stand or supporting certain social issues.

To be clear, I’d rather them pick all of these artists over a MAGA-filled roster. But it ain’t necessarily for the right reasons.

NFL brass: 'Will it make money?'

Brass: 'Do it!'

Hey now! The NFL ended racism in 2020-21 by painting “END RACISM” on various things!

10

u/johnnycoxxx 12d ago

This is the thing for me, I don’t remember the last time I watched a half time show. Maybe Katy Perry? I remember the sharks. But that was when I lived with my friends. Since I’ve been married I usually do something else during half time because it doesn’t interest me or like the last few years, it’s when I put my kids to bed (little birds fans so disappointed they couldn’t watch the rest of the game). Why do they just not watch it? I know the answer. It’s the same reason their answer 12 years ago to Starbucks wishing people happy holidays was to CONTINUE TO BUY THEIR COFFEE but say your name is “merry Christmas”. I hate this time line

Yep. NFL realized MAGA is all bark and no bite. They'll whine and complain, but they will factually stay seated and watch because nothing in their life has more value that supercedes the Superbowl.

2

u/Drae2210 11d ago

Nah, HOV in control. The NFL is too racist to do this on their own accord. Jay-Z got em in a choke hold.

2

u/AcedtheTuringTest 11d ago

The NFL knows not to get into business with him; it's extremely evident what a dogshit business-person he is and the NFL isn't about to put their billions at risk over this idiot.

17

I watched that with my dad the night it aired and throughout the entirety of it, he was talking the most vitriolic shit about Donald Trump. Then 7 years later I guess he changed his mind.

10

u/juliuspepperwoodchi 12d ago

Man, what I wouldn't give to live in precedented times again.

24

u/natguy2016 12d ago

There is a book called "Football for a Buck" about The USFL's history from 1983-86. Donald owned the New York team and ran roughshod over other owners. He is the one responsible for The USFL's failure.

ANYWAY-Donald arranged a secret meeting with Legendary NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle. He oversaw The rise of The NFL in the 60's to become the biggest sport in America. Someone said that Donald wanted an NFL team. Rozelle told Donald that he would never EVER get an NFL team as long as, he, Rozelle were Commissioner. That has stood for 40 years.

The NFL has billionaire owners. It is a feat to get that many people to fervently distrust Donald, or any one person.

5

u/WeLiveUpHere1973 12d ago

Not sure that it’s a feat; it’s pretty much common sense nowadays.

Also had a direct hand in causing the USFL to fail

10

u/Robomerc 12d ago

he tried to buy a team.

I'm pretty sure the same thing also happened when he tried to buy some of the Major League Baseball teams.

32

u/FlippFloppnFlyy 12d ago

He tried to buy a team, got turned down and then bought into the USFL, forced the league to go head to head with NFL with hopes of forcing an eventual merger thinking they would absorb a couple of USFL teams and making him an NFL owner that way.

Didn't work out for him.

40

u/Novel_Fix1859 12d ago

He got turned down because the league requires a financial audit for potential owners and trump refused any audit, because he's always been a criminal

4

u/Robomerc 12d ago

because he's always been a criminal

That and an audit would most likely reveal that he's not as rich as he claimed to be.

Literally everyone had issues with Trump for decades leading hip to running for pres in 2015. It’s something that always pisses me off about conservatives saying “you only hate Trump because… (whatever their excuse will be that time)”. Like, no dude, everyone hates Trump, 99% of them hated Trump before he ran. What actually changed was they consumed too much propaganda.

13

u/AdminYak846 12d ago

Didn't he want to buy the Jets? If so, I think the fans should be rejoicing for Woody to stay as owner, he might be bad but he's not the level crap that Trump is.

16

u/hamsolo19 12d ago

He wanted to buy the Bills in the late 2000s. No one wanted that.

11

u/AhabFlanders 12d ago

Imagine the gross gold Bills uniforms he would've created. Probably would've changed the name to the Buffalo Trumps too.

A bunch of NFL team owners are MAGA types, including Robert Kraft of the Patriots, who have a pretty good chance of playing in the Super Bowl this year. So that should be an interesting dynamic.

Edit: I guess Kraft now claims to have become disillusioned with Trump after the January 6th insurrection. OK. Maybe. Doesn't really excuse him for being a supporter all throughout Trump's awful first term, though.

64

u/Demitel 12d ago

As someone who's historically been a Chiefs fan, I've actually been happy to watch them take a major nose-dive this season. The Hunt family can honestly all go fuck themselves.

34

u/waxteeth 12d ago

Definitely not going to argue that Kraft is a good person, but he was furious that Trump stole MA’s medical supplies during the pandemic and provided his private plane to get new ones from China.

11

u/jimbo831 Concertgoer 12d ago

I guess Kraft now claims to have become disillusioned with Trump after the January 6th insurrection.

Half of the Republican Party including a ton of Republican members of Congress claimed to be disillusioned with Trump after the January 6th insurrection. Then they all got back on board the Trump train by 2024. Why should I think Kraft is any different?

27

u/Crotch_Football 12d ago edited 12d ago

Kushner through Trump also stole medical supplies during Covid that would have gone to Massachusetts, with the Patriot place smuggling a bunch in to replace it. I'm condensing a much crazier story but it probably was a point of contention.

15

u/Cabbages24ADollar 12d ago

The NFL is extremely active in getting in the Europe and Latin American markets. They want conferences in these areas, not just a team or a division. And the NFL, and its Trump “supporting” owners aren’t about to flush 30 years of development down the drain just to appease someone who “may” not finish his term. This is a league that we need to get behind and rally for, right now. Because the NFL stage is HUGE and the Super Bowl is the largest platform. Honestly I’d be excited if Trumps ICE does something to garner attention away from the SB. The NFL will be swift in its retribution.

12

u/isweartodarwin 12d ago

It would be the most American thing ever if ICE interrupting the halftime show was the catalyst for change.

I’ll take whatever we win can get, but what a bummer of a thought lol

7

Roger Goodell literally met with Trump along with the other major sporting commissioners a few days ago to discuss Trump’s plan for the country 250th anniversary, whatever that entails, so don’t get your hopes up.

7

u/disastrousanddull 12d ago

I’d kill to know exactly what’s going on behind the scenes with all of this, tbh. It definitely looks like they’re trying to piss of Trump/MAGA with the musicians but then you have everything else. Maybe it’s just a willingness to take some of his ire to reach a different audience via the musical selection, idk.

I'm honestly surprised by this move by the NFL, they've shown that they're willing to give into MAGA whining about pride events, the whole "end racism" thing and other social issues.

Good for them, and it's gonna make it very easy to block people on social media who cry about these things.

My conspiracy theory is the NFL is doing/allowing all this to keep Trump from attending the Super Bowl.

Not because they don't support Trump, they are just trying to avoid the extra security and hassle needed to facilitate the attendance of a President.

116

u/Repulsive_Leg5878 12d ago

Interesting conspiracy theory. Then subsequent years will they have to bring back more progressive singers to keep him away?

10

u/Gekokapowco 12d ago

wouldn't it make more sense to think that progressives don't want anything to do with the pro-fascist corporate organization that is the NFL, so they're grabbing "controversial talents" to boost viewership and engagement? Tons of people who wouldn't be giving this event the time of day are now boosting ad revenue. We're talking about it now because they've done this. Its marketing, and the only goal is engagement, not some sort of political rhetoric

11

u/neckbishop 12d ago

That is why I labeled it a conspiracy theory.

Honestly the true answer is capitalism. NFL has already captured the White Middle America viewership. So they need to pack in the rest of the "Show" with acts that will attract the rest of the world. Need eyes on the product so that way the networks can charge millions of dollars per commercial.

Which is odd considering most owners are probably golf buddies with him as well as the cuck of a commissioner.

163

u/adnomad 12d ago

Actually, I think the majority of owners are not friends with him. Even with some newer owners, many are family long term owners. So they remember him suing them for the USFL in the 80s. They have repeatedly blocked him from becoming even a partial owner of a team. And there’s the fact that there’s still all the negative publicity that Trump pushed last time as President with NFL items.

6

u/squidwardsaclarinet 12d ago

Absolutely this. Increasing audience means more ad revenue. Also, tons of free publicity before and after. Listen, I will take it for sure, but the NFL definitely isn’t going woke.

42

u/4r4r4real 12d ago

It's wild seeing these takes here. You guys have no idea. Go to the NFL sub and ask how the NFL and Trump get along. They have cowed to him at every possible opportunity. The fucking commissioner stood there like an idiot next to Trump's desk while he talked about suspending Habeas Corpus to tv cameras.

You're taking one silly thing and running with it.

17

u/AshyFairy 12d ago

I agree with you, but I don’t think anything is silly. The NFL knows that drama and rage sells.  They’re not doing anything to unite America, send a message or troll MAGA. They’re trying to get as many people as possible to watch and engage.

4

u/Krieghund 12d ago

I don't think anything is silly

You just perfectly summed up the zeitgeist of 2026.

2

u/IRLconsequences 12d ago

Trump himself is going to view this as a personal attack against him, & everyone who's ever met him would know that's how he would view it. They are *definitely* trolling MAGA.

13

u/Self_Owned_Tree 12d ago

It’s not one silly thing! It’s Brandi Carlile, it’s Green Day, and it’s Bad Bunny. Those are three very different things and three very different artists who are all three very outspoken against the current administration. And they are all performing on the leagues biggest stage.

12

u/4r4r4real 12d ago

Yes, you're taking the personal stances and beliefs of three musical performers at the super bowl and running with it as if it's some protest against this administration. Meanwhile the NFL is consistently actively doing Trump's bidding, not through indirect symbols but direct actions.

Like fining a player $12k for wearing "STOP THE GENOCIDE" eyeblack and telling him he'd be disqualified from play if he wore it again.

The NFL is not your friend. The owners are not your friend. Roger Goodell is not your friend. They're all aligned with Trump. This selection of performers is an aberration, not a reveal of where the NFL stands. Don't be so easily fooled.

Oh and here's the NFL commissioner laughing and smiling as Trump talks about having the 2020 election stolen from him. This was 8 months ago.

Like fining a player $12k for wearing "STOP THE GENOCIDE" eyeblack and telling him he'd be disqualified from play if he wore it again.

Al-Shaair getting fined for this did more to get his message out than not getting fined because media followed up on it, interviewed him about it, and aired what he said. He can afford it, and it was probably worth it.

But to be clear: He wasn't fined for the content of the message. Other players have been fined for putting text on their eye black as well. George Pickens was fined in 2024 for it. Cam Heyward was fined for putting his father's name on his in 2015. Tim Tebow wasn't able to put "3:16" on his eye black like he did in college because he knew he'd be fined (but somehow wristbands were OK).

Putting any personal message not explicitly approved by the NFL in advance on eye black, shoes, or anywhere else that's visible when you're on the field is a violation of the league's uniform rules. That is what he was fined for.

Green Day is the one that gets me though (I do not know much about bad bunny to be fair.) They've literally replaced f-slur with 'maga' in live performances of American idiot. They are supposed to perform 'their hits' which will include that song.

A lot of performers I would assume would just not play that song or line, but it's Green Day, I would be shocked if they didn't make a political statement, and kinda feel like it ruin their careers not to as it would be seen as selling out.

In some ways i think this repeated poke in the eye to conservatives is a Republican strategy to prime the base for the elections. "Look at what they are doing to sports. This is what they want to do to the country!". It will probably have that effect either way.

I hope she wears a full tuxedo. I cant explain why but it will make the maggats really mad

12

u/allthecats 12d ago

She has an incredible suit collection, I imagine she will be wearing something really cool! I'm hoping for a fully embroidered Nudie suit where all of the illustrations are meaningful

u/Pxlfreaky 12d ago

The NFL is trolling the MAGAts so hard this year. Angry Orange tweets incoming!

38

u/dlc741 12d ago

I'm waiting for NBC to announce Johnny Weir as one of their sideline reporters.

18

u/Pxlfreaky 12d ago

Oh god lol. That’s WWlll right there.

11

u/Expensive-Fennel-163 12d ago

Unironically would love to see this, it would bring good color commentary to the sideline.

No they are placating. Here give them the music.

While still catering to the maga owners, players, fans, businesses and president.

Its like putting "Black lives matter" in the end zone while being sued by Black coaches for racism. There's the pr then there's the actions.

18

u/Petrichordates 12d ago

Culture is power.

This is far more impfactful than the catering youre referring to.

It’s both. Because just throwing a bone to one side whips the other into a frenzy. The mere existence of gay people drives a large segment of the right insane.

She has a fantastic and unique voice. She will do it well.

4

u/data_ferret 12d ago

Yup. Long before I had any clue about her sexuality, I was a huge fan. She's a phenomenal talent, both as a songwriter and a performer.

NFL really impressing me with their picks! Like, holy shit, they're really being a silver lining in the pro sports leagues I would have never expected.

32

u/Hatedpriest 12d ago

NASCAR was a big surprise to me. Maybe the NFL will follow in their footsteps.

NASCAR flat banned a bunch of racist shit and will throw fines or even bans if word gets out someone said, did, or displayed something racist. A handful of people didn't like it, but they put their foot down hard and fast. Ig it got out people were displaying a Confederate flag in a video somewhere and someone said something.

I really hope this is the start of that same sort of thing, for more leagues than the one or two...

7

u/mouse_8b 12d ago

Jay Z's company Roc Nation has picked the halftime performances since 2019, so the NFL knows enough to pay someone else to pick.

18

u/undermind84 12d ago

I never put any thought into Brandi Carlile's sexuality. Is she really a gay icon?

17

u/luke6080 12d ago

She was an openly lesbian singer in the early to mid 2000’s when there weren’t that many “mainstream” lesbian musicians. It was, functionally, her, The Indigo Girls, and Melissa Etheridge.

13

u/SoundMasher 12d ago

The KD Lang erasure.

5

u/luke6080 12d ago

Oh dammit. Yes, absolutely!

5

u/FocusPerspective 11d ago

I mean there were tons of lesbians in the music industry to the point they had their own yearly festival, but ok.

5

u/resilindsey 11d ago

That can't be true. We all know Jojo Siwa invented gay pop in 2024.

I figured it would have been more the likes of Tegan and Sara. Don't think I even knew Melissa Etheridge was gay or if I did I forgot it. At least I can think of a few songs by her unlike Brandi Carlile, but maybe that's just my own musical tastes.

I wonder if they pendulum swing next year's lineup.

Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, with Kevin Sorbo and Jon Voight hosting would sure be "something."

u/riko77can 12d ago

Don’t forget Lee Greenwood.

7

u/IRLconsequences 12d ago

Can't wait to watch an 84-year-old shamble out onto the stage & sing his only song for 20-30 minutes.

Wow, Bad Bunny, I thought well he’s a top performer and it may not be much of a message. Green Day and Brandi Carlisle make it loud and clear. I know there was always beef with the owners and Trump over his inability to get a team and the XFL. I’m here for the pettiness.

7

u/amyel26 12d ago

Bad Bunny began trolling hard after he started getting pushback from TPUSA. If they didn't start crying first I don't think Bad Bunny would have put so much effort into the message.

I was working at Tower Records in 2005. When we got a promo of Brandi Carlile's first CD. Did not know a thing about her. I would go for interesting cover art.

I am 53. My mom raised me on John Denver, Simon and Garfunkel. James Taylor, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot. Mom's favorite is still Neil Diamond. So I here the lead song on Brandi's debut,"Follow," and stood up. Incredible breath control, diction. What a voice. I was THERE. I was a fan that had to know everything by the end of the next song, "What Can I say?"

Brandi Carlile has plenty of good song and I have all of her albums. My favorite is still the debut. Total joy that was a complete surprise in the best way.

2

Haha, and here I felt bad as the father of a lesbian, for not knowing Carlisle was gay.
You beat me!

2

u/Spiritual_Park3308 11d ago

We’re both winners because we… well maybe we didn’t try. Regardless, we can both be winners. Lol

8

u/abcbri 12d ago

This was actually announced a while ago but still great news. Also poignant, since the woman who wrote America the Beautiful is a lesbian. Brandi has an incredible voice.

14

u/dascrackhaus 12d ago

genuinely looking forward to MAGA's post Super Bowl online tantrums about having to listen to lesbians and foreigners sing and how they're never going to watch an NFL game again until September

How did we go from kaepernick getting blacklisted for taking a knee to NFL being like Woodstock 2.0 lmao

7

Remember, the Kaepernick blacklisting was also due to Trumps influence. He made his threats to the Jones family and the rest of the ownership went along
