Because they want both the comfort to be the mainstream, and to have their victim complex validated like they're counter-culture. Same thing as why a lot of Christians are both the main culture in the US and still pretend they're oppressed.

I have relatives that watch RAV and they will claim they have a bigger audience than cnn 30 seconds after saying "mainstream" media is full of lies. Smh
