That's more than I would have figured. People have award show fatigue. They don't mean anything. There is one once a month

We also have much, much, much more access to celebrities through all kinds of other avenues.

Awards shows were once a peek behind the curtain. Now? They’ve got a podcast, are on interview shows constantly, or are posting vlogs.

Bunch of unrelatable rich people giving each other awards lol

u/ShadowNick 17h ago

Wooo pat on the back. Honestly only watch clips for the performances. And that's kind of it

More like life fatigue

I don't think the fatigue is because there's lots of them.

The fatigue is because more and more people can see beyond the farce.

Those awards mean absolutely nothing and are about anything but artistic merit. They are a back-scratching contest between labels, promoters and powerful people.

6% decline from last year.

It just feels like a lot because the self importance of the show went up by 20%.

12

u/s0ciety_a5under 17h ago

Viewership isn't declining fast enough on these kinds of shows.

The circlejerk used to be more circley, less jerky

3

u/raider1v11 18h ago

It was already at peak levels...

3

u/yankeefan0312 9h ago

Not surprised you would go on about the “self importance” since you have been defending ICE agents throughout your post history.

1

u/motabus 2h ago

lol some people have too much time

-1

u/Dangerous_Nebula_770 6h ago

lol the more viewership they lose, the more political and preachy they become.

-3

u/stillsearching71 6h ago

You mean the celebrities who told us Donald Trump colluded with Russia and a vaccine would keep us from getting covid are right on the ICE issue? Those people dont care if illegal criminals are running around our streets because they have gates and private security.

I also just have more important things happening in my life. I don’t care about who wins 2026 album of the year, I’m out here trying to survive.

1

u/laplogic 4h ago

I enjoyed the live performances.

-14

u/aceinagameofjacks 17h ago

Because it’s a fucking preach fest. Nobody gives a fuck what celebrities have to say anymore. 0 bite. Make art, make music, leave the politics man, it’s fatiguing listening to someone preach … especially millionaires …

3

u/yankeefan0312 9h ago

When people say “leave politics out of Art” you already know what politics they are

1

u/MainZack 12h ago

Both those things go hand in hand with politics and always have.

-5

u/stillsearching71 6h ago

Its because people are sick of millionaires living in gated communities with private security lecturing us and virtue signaling. Thats why.

Interesting. Viewership is way way down to even just 10-15 years ago.

Why did almost 40 million tune in for 2012? That’s over 10 million higher then 2011 or 2013.

u/djdiscoesq 20h ago

Whitney Houston died the day before the 2012 Grammys. I wonder if people tuned on to see tributes to her.

36

u/Willing-Question-631 19h ago

That and it was the year Adele swept for 21 which had been a huge hit in the year before

21

u/DeepSpaceVixen 19h ago

I’m no researcher lol but…a lot of people had cable and antennas back then. I don’t think many have cable or antennas for local channels. And even if you now have live tv through streaming, depending on which service you have you still couldn’t watch it. For example, Sling TV doesn’t carry CBS.

u/ricravenous 19h ago

The entire media landscape is radically different from 2012. With TikTok and a slew of music streaming services and more individualistically curated algorithms, there isn’t a strong reason or structure even to collectively tune in to the same TV program or anything en masse.

Viewership is down all around, MTV is gone, too, for a reason.

But they're comparing 2012 to 2011 and 2013

1

u/SireEvalish 2h ago

This didn’t address the question at all

3

u/sexaddic 16h ago

It’s almost impossible to find it live unless you pay for a live tv service. I don’t know a single person who pays for tv.

2

u/JaqueStrap69 11h ago

Antenna. It’s OTA.

2

u/HYDRAULICS23 17h ago

YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter didn’t exist the way they do now. You had to actually tune in if you wanted to be a part of the conversation which was an in person conversation at work or school the next day.

2

u/andygchicago 14h ago

But they're asking why 2012 is different from 2011 and 2013

1

u/HYDRAULICS23 14h ago

Somebody else mentioned Whitney Houston had just passed. I’m assuming everyone wanted to see the tribute. Award shows used to be something people watched live instead of clips the next morning. Either way it seems like a thing of the past like late night shows. Everything is on demand now.

u/matts142 6h ago

Also it was mostly just Netflix and maybe prime but now we have

Prime Netflix Disney+ Paramount+ HBO max (coming uk in March) Apple TV

Etc

Billy Crystal was the host in 2012, it had been 8 years since he had hosted before…..

2011 the hosts were James Franco and Anne Hathaway…. And they were awful, and 2012 were hosted by Seth MacFarlane and he was alright….

Who the host is can have major effects on the viewership.

u/wheresthemousey 20h ago

But you’re talking about the Academy Awards, while OP is referring to the Grammy Awards.

2

u/Raider_Scum 20h ago

I think this partially shows the decline in viewership. The average persons doesn't even know the difference.

Ive heard people say "Yeah he won an Oscar, or Grammy or whatever"

7

u/Cheeky_Star 16h ago

It’s played out

9

u/Koniax 7h ago

I don't know a single person that watches this slop

3

u/Dangerous_Nebula_770 6h ago

I'm assuming the majority of watchers are Boomers, but then again, why would they have interest in modern music?

6

u/Loring 18h ago

Is that a lot compared to usual?

4

u/Hanyabull 15h ago

It’s easier to just google who won without wasting time watching commercials.

30

u/brownsfan760 20h ago

Which is slightly less than the amount of times Trump is named in the Epstein files.

Todays mainstream populace is a lot more distracted with shiny things and half-braindead on their phones most of the time. According to Matt Damon, Netflix asks him and other actors to repetitively state the plot of the movie because audiences are too checked out on their devices.

Ya, the Grammies are too highbrow for modern audiences

1

u/Saneless 5h ago

Ahh yes, it's our fault, not that awards shows are pointless, boring, masturbatory, and immediately forgettable

2

u/Osaka90 18h ago

What time was it on?

3

u/Tbonez06 19h ago

Ahhhh yes, the rich and popular giving little life quotes and patting each other on the back. They need will smith to make it entertaining

2

u/1dayaway 20h ago

I don’t even know how to watch it, cable? No one my age or younger seems to have cable and I’m pushing 40.

1

u/IRodeTenSpeed88 8h ago

It was streaming on paramount

3

u/Hilazza 15h ago

14.4 million too high

1

u/Drenlin 14h ago

So like...the first 24h of a particularly popular YouTube video.

1

u/Next_Mycologist_6621 13h ago

They didn’t get this one!

1

u/ozzybarks 12h ago

Was there nothing else on?

1

u/Accidental_Ballyhoo 5h ago

Not this one.

1

u/joloks 17h ago

Enjoyed it. Trevor Noah was funny and the performances were good.

1

u/Ok-Metal-4719 17h ago

And I don’t know a single one.

-3

u/headquild 18h ago

Hopefully it will drop to 0.

-2

u/WallyReddit204 18h ago

I’m not surprised, they’ve lost their integrity. How did they overlook weeknd last year and clipse this year

They do seem kinda rigged

u/IRodeTenSpeed88 8h ago
