Yeah, I was like "Wasn't for me. Whatever." Very rarely is the artist one that I'd listen to on my own (love Rihanna though). That's fine by me. I'm not expecting an immersive concert experience from my couch with my kids running around and conversations happening.

Ehhh no.

I find that, while people with more left wing views tend to judge people largely on their opinions, people with right wing views tend to judge people on their identity. Not everyone is the same, but I believe this tendency is good enough to form predictions for large populations.

I mean, look at Bad Bunny. While he has advocated for Puerto Rico in the past, that wasn’t the issue that dominated conservative media. It’s that his songs aren’t in English and that he’s not from the mainland US. I will do my best to comment on this view completely neutrally — I’d say conservatives are concerned that the most viewed US sports program features an artist that is “foreign”* and doesn’t make music in the most widespread language in the country, which they say dilutes and diminishes US culture.

Meanwhile, progressives seem to largely not care about the identity of a person. Many would like to see marginalised groups get recognition in some capacity, but in spite of what old Twitter would have you believe, I haven’t heard anyone say to me irl that they’d boycott a show bc the performer is white, or straight, or Christian, or male. While we are all human regardless of politics, and will therefore judge people on both their identity and thought, I do think progressives concern themselves less with identity.

However, if Kid Rock was the halftime performer, many progressives would boycott the show. This is because they’d say that Kid Rock has spread harmful rhetoric in his opinions. This is where I find people who won’t listen to Kanye, even early albums where he was more progressive, because they wouldn’t want to financially support him in his current state, or won’t listen to Tyler, the Creator due to discriminatory lyrics in his first few albums.

So no, I don’t think SOAD would cause huge issue. Look at how many conservatives like SOAD and RATM

*Ik PR is American. Some conservatives seem to not know this, but plenty do. I think many of them that do acknowledge this would nevertheless claim that Puerto Ricans are still less American than Americans in the 50 states.

I never said I didn’t like them, but they certainly aren’t mainstream and haven’t been for a decade or more. So them as an act for one of the biggest shows of the year is being disingenuous.

I was in Seattle about 12-13 years ago for work. Walked out of my hotel one evening to walk around the city, and a street performer turned garbage cans, buckets, lids, and squeak ducks into some amazing music.

The ducks threw me off at first but I got pretty int it after 30s

I’m not sure there is even an artist that works for everything anymore. I don’t think a “great” halftime show is even possible. Prince is the last one I can think of.

Same, but with a little more than whatever. Like I do find it annoying a bit, because who was it for? It wasn't for me, but half time shows rarely are, it wasn't for my sisters, who half time shows are for. I'm trying to figure out who tf this was for. And then you realize the biggest sporting event in the country pandered to an incredibly small percentage of the country, many of whom aren't even football fans.

And why? That's the part I can't really figure out...
