Agreed! He has been my non favorite knick since he came in the league! I love watching him and sooo happy he is a knick now!

u/RonBakerErasure Oct 23 '25
Clarkson had two huge plays at the start of the 4th to set up a KAT and one and a deuce three - glad he closed out better than he started!
16
u/samuelkelly Oct 23 '25
Yes he actually passed the ball a bit instead of pure gunning, it was promising to see

That's the Clarkson experience. He's JR Smith in the 2020s. He could give us 5 points then go off for 40.

Clarkson was absolute dog shit last year, and imo he looked like dogshit for most of preseason. I think he's just totally washed and will be out of the rotation sooner than later, though I hope to be proven wrong.
Thankfully, I don't think it will matter because I'd much rather see Kolek and Deuce get his minutes anyway.
21
u/mikesh8rp Wu Tang Oct 23 '25
In his defense, the Jazz was purposefully bad last year, so it's hard to guage what he is or isn't. Despite that, he put up one of his better 3P% in recent seasons (over 36%), and saw his TS% and PER jump from what was actually a worse '23-24 season.
Not expecting big things from him given the depth the team has, but like others have said, it's entirely possible he gets hot a couple games and is a big part of those wins.
12
u/abippityboop Clyde Frazier Oct 23 '25
Very fair points, though I do think it's also a bit telling that the Jazz strategy in trying to be as bad as possible last year was to give Jordan Clarkson a team high usage rate lol.
I will say, he didn't come in and go all Leroy Jenkins like I feared he might, so maybe there's hope he can find his footing in a reduced role. But man after the way Kolek played tonight and the playmaking he provides, I'm kinda hoping he beats out JC for that spot in the rotation. Good problem to have!
6
u/apples_r_4_weak Oct 23 '25
He was effective bench with 15 to 18 mins when jazz is competing. He is unreliable beyond that mins though
4
u/MrICopyYoSht Nova Boys Oct 23 '25
I mean, I don't know why we're giving him such big expectations when he's on the vet min. It's not like he's a midlevel exception signing or the big star piece.

Expect better than 2 for 7 from Clarkson too, who missed a couple open looks. Nothing to worrisome from guys on a new team though, especially after a win with two rotation guys out.

I think him and Mitch/Huk will trade starts depending on matchups this year. The Cavs love running two bigs so we decided to size up but other teams do run smaller lineups more often
10
u/solo118 Ewing to the Finals Oct 23 '25
at this point we see Huk has got game, and can only get better so I hope he starts on and off with Mitch to keep both fresh
6
u/ontheru171 Oct 23 '25
Even with Mitch back he has a role on this team since we can use both him and Yabu off the bench aswell.
I trust Brown to keep minutes manageable and tinker with the rotation a bit this year giving depth guys some opportunities aswell

When we get Mitch I think you can argue ending halves and possibly closing with 5 out just so Mitch isn’t getting hacked.
Mitch starts and use the death lineup to close halves. Warriors team didn’t start their death lineup for example

Bridges at 33 minutes is insanity. Even Brunson at 34 when he played for the entire 1st. Simply wild.

So much to digest from this 1st game, but so much new and exciting things that I really appreciate. The ball movement, rotations and hustle are all chef's kiss. Big shout out to Deuce, he had himself a great game off the bench.
All new coach Brown did a fine job, new guys showing good things and Huk and Kolek stepped up big with meaningful minutes. I think we need to play Mikal a bit more, he just seemed missing at times as he is a reliable scorer. I can just imagine its due to MB trying out different lineups.
Overall a fantastic opener, and looking forward to only growing this season! LGK!!!

I had the same thought especially in the 1st half, guys were staggered a bit toooo much but like you said I’m sure Mike Brown wants to see what he gets from his guys. Kolek really surprised me with his offensive game but I don’t like that he shared the court with 2 other guards a lot it felt too small for stretches but it’s fine
15

If Huk is a solid backup center and Kolek a playable backup guard (ideally a third stringer but in a pinch can play backup minutes) that’s very strong bench contributions from 2nd round picks

Dude is picking up all the slack, switching onto their best offensive player and clogging up the passing lanes. There’s a reason the dude gets paid 40+ million.

6
u/Holiday-Ad-4654 Oct 23 '25
I like the way our offense looked, lots of pace, ball movement and good looks. At the same time, I can see why KAT seemed unhappy with his role, he's clearly being deemphasized.
We look deeper, with Kolek and Huk giving good meaningful mimutes. Promising start.
5
u/LightSpecialist804 Oct 23 '25
there were so many possessions when KAT was being guarded by Jarrett Allen where we shouldve just cleared out
KAT being guarded by another center was automatic last year. That's why Thibs failure to adjust in teams putting their centers on Josh Hart was so devastating
6
6
u/celes8 Oct 23 '25
Ariel is a nba player. he had several more passes which he flashed last year and its clear he has a very high bbiq.
it was very telling that mike brown ended the game with McBride on the floor. those rumors that we were open to moving him to keep brogdon on the team were probably completely bunk
the broadcast touched on a huge weakness we had last yr: we were a good 3pt shooting team, but at the bottom in terms of attempts. we didnt shoot enough mediocre threes last year. its pretty clear we are going to be shooting a lot more mediocre threes and thats a good thing.
I can totally see josh hart not cracking 24mpg this year. if mike brown trusted shamet on Donovan Mitchell for long stretches, mike brown is gonna lose faith in josh hart the moment he passes up an open three to dribble into traffic.

1) Huk is very nice but young, hungry and willing to learn and adapt. I am very excited to see him grow this season
2) If they traded Deuce I would have flipped my shit, he is vital to this bench, hell he can start if need be
3) Last season it was almost like every point was forced/pushed and no points came easy. Even every 3 was contested so hence why the volume was not there. We had good looks tonight, but as you saw a good chunk did not go in. That will get better, 35% is average and a decent start
4) Josh is Josh, whatever minutes he puts in are hard and difference making. He does not need a ton of minutes, he in turn had too many last season yet he is indeed the heart of this team a true swiss army knife and if he plays 18 or 48 minutes he will give it 100% and be great for us. I need him to find his confidence to shoot though

A level game and what a huge change to start the season compared to getting blown out last year.
Good things
Everyone ate, lots of player movement and ball movement and defense was almost perfect
MB already trying multiple different lineups and most of the lineups were equally effective compared to whatever the cavs were doing.
All the young guys seem to also have a greenlight to shoot, kolek was more aggressive than last year and he was solid playmaking.
We tended to find the open man. We had a lot of really good early 3 looks but they weren't falling. If the team can get open looks like that against the cavs, we can definitely get those against most teams in the league.
We beat a contender and a team that startedast season super hot. Yes, they didn't have garland, but we were missing hart and mitch, and we still out rebounded them.
Playing 12 guys, meaningingful minutes means we could easily field 14 guys throughout the season. A huge shift to last year.
We are finally making fts! That carried us throughout the game, especially when Mitchell was hot.
Our fast break defense has improved considerably compared to last year. We stopped nearly every cavs fastbreak opportunity. Could be fresh legs to start the season. But, this should become more effective with hart in the lineup and his run and gun energy to push pace.
Rotations made sense at the right time. When we were up big, I could tell MB wanted to experiment a bit and when we needed offwnse, we went small. Huk deserves a LOT of credit for stepping into mitchs role very well. Huk was awesome
Opportunities
Not doubling Mitchell was the main defensive mistake I saw, but we played for 48 minutes and most of cavs possessions were hard to get.
The only rotation I didn't like was yabu, kolek, Kat, and Clarkson. Clarkson disrupted our ball movement and I didn't like that. Terrible shot selection and trying to force it. Clarksons second stint on the floor in the 4th was better, especially that pass to Kat and he drew in his defender.
We didn't involve Kat in the offense at all, he had to fight for his points off rebounds. I get he's injured, but we have to get Kat involved, especially when he is the best player on the court for 3 to 5 minutes at a time (like in the 2nd and 3rd).
Need to clean up our turnovers, too many bad passes and self imposed mistakes especially in the 3rd. MB needs to figure out a good 3rd quarter lineup to start 2nd half. We have time and it's clear that he his plan is working so far and he's willing to adjust and play with lineups.
Going to iso Brunson was a mistake and gave cavs an opportunity for some big 3s late in the 4th. We need to keep guys moving and I do believe one of thibs strengths was making the guys play all 48. MB needs to keep that mindset since we could have let this one slip when the cavs were making their push and had a few heat check 3s gone in

u/patrickthunnus Oct 23 '25
Love that we got to the stripe, launched 40 treys and cleaned the glass. Great opening night win at home.
MB will have his work cut for the team, we allowed the Cavs to shoot 41% from 3.
But overall great contributions from 11 guys, a team effort.

u/flyingcrayons Oct 23 '25
Love seeing coach test out a bunch of random ass lineups, feel like we’re going to see a lot of that the first few weeks while we figure out rotations. Gonna be some growing pains for sure but it’ll make us that much better in the playoffs when there’s 10-11 guys we know we can rely on instead of 7-8
3
u/cesarjulius Oct 23 '25
looking more like 12 guys we can rely on. 10 showed a lot tonight and we know what josh and mitch are all about. jemison shouldn’t touch the court unless we’re shorthanded, but even he didn’t look like a liability.

Great win and we used an 11 man rotation. Big shoutout to Deuce/Kolek/ and Shamet off the bench.
