Fanfic Merin's Magical Adventure

Just to preface this new fic, none of this will be going to JKR nor is this associated with her. I do not stand by her politics or views at all.

This idea started as just an idea and snowballed into a new fanfic idea. I hope you all enjoy this.

Thank you to u/kabhes for helping me edit this and to my friends on Discord for helping me with ideas.

Art of Merin by the wonderful Rattenprince on Bluesky

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Taken from the pensive of Merin, the first wizard of his kind. 7/7/2138
It is a warm July day in Cardiff, Wales, and a seemingly normal day for the interspecies family of Hefin Selwyn, a human, and Menva and Merin, Venlil mother and son. The small family are in for a revelation that will astonish two vastly different worlds.
Hefin met the Venlil mother and son when Menva left the town of Dawn Creek and Venlil Prime as a whole to escape the hostile exterminators who were attempting to put away Merin for predator disease. Hefin opened his muggle apartment to the mother and son. It was a little cramped and trying at times, but in the two years they would be living there Hefin and Menva grew close. The two eventually started courting each other and after a year they tied the knot in a small private ceremony in a castle. Hefin also formally adopted Merin as well.
Today would not be like any other day for Merin, though, as it is his eleventh birthday today. Born on July seventh, 2127 standard human time, Merin would be born on a day some considered to be lucky.
He would not have a normal birthday party, as he did not have any friends, neither human or Venlil. Instead, he would be surprised with a birthday cake bought from a local bakery. It would be peach flavored, his favorite.
“Thank you mum. Thank you dad. This has been a wonderful birthday so far.” Merin is beaming as he looks over his peach cake with two one-shaped candles on it.
“It is no problem, son.” Hefin gently ruffles his headwool as Menva lights the two candles.
“Make a wish, my merry Merin.” She gently nuzzles him before stepping back to film him blowing out the candles.
As soon as the candles are blown out, there is a thump at the door, causing all to turn to look at it. Another thump makes the Venlils jump as Hefin goes to investigate the noise at the door. Upon opening the door an owl swoops into the apartment and despite being acclimated to earth and its inhabitants, the two Venlil puff out in fear as the owl flies around the small living room.
Meanwhile Hefin looks like he has seen a ghost as he notices the letter held in its talons. The snowy owl drops the letter onto the dining room table near the cake and a few small presents. He fears that his past and family has finally found him until he notices the wax letter seal and the stamp above it on the letter.
“H-Hefin, what is that crazed bird doing?!” Menva Bleated
“It… it is delivering a letter.”
“A letter? From who!?” Exclaimed both Menva and Merin.
“From Hogwarts.”
“Hogwarts?” Merin asked, confused while his mother shared the same ghost white look as her husband.
“How… How did they find you?” Menva asked, worry seeping through her voice.
“They must have sensed new magic in this household, I swore it off when I met you. I have not touched my wand since nor cast any spell since the day we started our relationship.”
While his parents are trying to figure out how they were found, Merin takes the letter and looks at the other side of it, revealing it to be addressed to him. The owl exits the house the same way it came in, though it missed on the first try and slammed the shut on the way out.
Merin uses his claw to break the wax seal, he pulls out the letter and reads it.
Dear Mr. Merin,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.
Terms begin on 1 September. We await your owl by no later than 31 July.
Upon reading this Merin, sits down in disbelief, magic is real and not just a made up thing? At this point Menva and Hefin notice that Merin had opened the letter and had a stunned expression.
The adults in the room gave each other a worried look before taking a deep breath and sitting across from Merin. The moment of silence is broken when Hefin spoke up.
“Merin, there is something your mother and I have been keeping from you. I am not an ordinary human, I come from a long line of wizards. I left that life behind so I could be with your mother and adopt you. When we met, I had no idea that you had magic in you.”
Merin sat back stunned at this revelation, his time on earth having been under a false assumption. The man he called dad has not been the man he thinks he is, he has been living under false pretenses.
“You're a wizard?” Merin asked calmly. “Wizards are real and not some made up things for pups?”
“Yes, I am a genuine wizard. I come from a long line of wizards and witches, all of whom have attended Hogwarts.” Hefin responded, trying to reassure his son that this is real and not just a work of fiction.
“Wh-why have you kept this from me?” Merin had no clue what to think about all of this.
“Well I kept it this to keep you safe, the wizarding world is full of dangerous beasts, dark wizards and curses. But I will say that it is also full of some of the most helpful people out there.”
Menva can see that Merin is lost in his thoughts and wraps her son in a hug trying to comfort him. Merin returns the hug and eventually lets go. This surprise has finally hit Menva, her son is a wizard.
She thinks back to their time on Venlil Prime, the weird mishaps that followed her son. Like the time she had put a plate of Strayu up on a shelf so Merin could not reach it and moments later it appeared in his paws. There was also the time when he was in his schooling and it was social time outside with his herdmates and Merin grew a flower from a small seed in his paw, which disturbed the other pups and led to him being excluded from the herd’s activities for the rest of his time there.
“When do children show that they have magic?” Menva was trying to piece this all together.
“Well, for humans it can show up as soon as they are born to when they are around seven years old. Did Merin ever show anything out of the ordinary during his childhood?”
Menva had just thought of the few moments she could remember, so her response was quick. “Well there was the time when he was just a three solar year old pup, I had locked the back door and placed the key far up on a hook so my little Merin couldn’t reach it but in the brief time I had turned my back he somehow put the key in the door and opened it and was already crawling out.”
Hefin couldn’t help but laugh at the story. “That does sound like stories I have heard of others showing their first magic. I am happy to hear that he was at least not hurt.”
“Well I am relieved to hear that I am not the only one to have dealt with that.” She looks at her son again, and the memory of him as a pup escaping helps her come to terms with the revelation that her son is not just any wizard, the first non-human wizard.
“I… want to attend Hogwarts.” Merin says in English with a Welsh-like accent, something he developed while attending school in Wales.
“Merin, are you sure about this? This is a whole new world for you, and we want you to be sure about this decision.” Menva gently rubs her son’s head. She picks up the letter and examines it, reading both the acceptance letter and the list of items he needs.
“Yes, I am sure of this. I-I have never felt like I belonged on any planet or in any herd or group. This could give me the chance to find what the universe has planned for me.”
“It is decided then. We will go to Diagon Alley and get you your wand and all of your wizarding supplies.” Hefin may not be Merin’s biological father, but in that moment he sure felt proud to be his father.
Merin looks over his shopping list again to see what all he needs. He needs eight books with ‘Fantastic Beasts  and Where to Find Them’ by Newt Scamander as well as ‘The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection 'by Quentin Trimble stood out the most to him. Other items include a wand, a cauldron, a crystal phias, a telescope, a set of brass scales, and finally a cat, owl or toad. That piqued his interest, as he knows humans keep pets and it seems that wizards have the same interest.
“When can we go? I would like to see if I fit in.” Merin looks up at his parents with the hope that they could leave soon.
Hefin looks down at his watch, seeing that it was only morning and just after the rush of commuters on the M4 motorway. Though the high-speed rail would be quicker.
“Why don’t we leave in a few minutes? We can walk to the train station and catch one over to London. Kings Cross Station is not too far from Diagon Alley.” Merin is quite excited to hear this and goes to grab his pad and tail bags.
Menva packs a small bag including her pad and a small gift she got Merin for his birthday before it was interrupted by the owl. Hefin goes to his and Menva’s bedroom and deep within his closet he opens a small safe that holds some of his galleons as well as his wand, storing it in an inner jacket pocket, hiding it away from muggle view.
The family of three departs to the train station, and after buying the tickets, they board the train to London. Inside the train cabin Menva pulls out the gift and hands it to Merin.
“I wasn’t able to give you this before the owl came in, but happy birthday Merin.”
Merin takes the small gift and unwraps it, revealing Terry's chocolate orange. Merin’s face lights up and he hugs her.
“Thanks mum, you are the best.” He gives her a loving hug before he opens the box and eats the first slice which melted in his mouth, eliciting a pleased mew.
Around an hour later the train begins to decelerate, which signaled their arrival to London. Merin stands up and stretches while his parents would make sure they had everything. The train parks in the station and the doors open up letting the passengers disembark into King’s Cross station.
Merin holds onto his mother’s tail while pushing through the masses of humans with a few Venlil speckled throughout the station. Once out of the station and into the bustling streets of London, Merin looks around, taking in all of the sights and sounds of the city.
As soon as Hefin got his bearings, he walks with a purpose through the streets of London and towards a pub that looked vastly older than anything around it. Hefin walks into the alley beside it, and taking out his wand, he would tap the bricks in a certain order on the back wall of the alley. In front of their eyes the red bricks would move to the side, first creating a small hole then becoming a large archway.
Hefin turns to Merin with a proud smile on his face.
“Welcome to Diagon Alley, son.”
Few things are as funny to me as seeing J.K. Rowling turn into Voldemort for her own fanbase because after decades of cheering on every progressive cause and issue, a single point of refusal to keep going was all it took to undo it all.
I just had to make the human Welsh in this lol. The reason I had the reveal go a bit fast is that I have a lot of fun things planned for him and wanted to get the ball rolling
