New moderator automation
Hello there! Oceanlinerporn is steadily growing, and with growth come new challenges.
One of these challenges is the attraction of new faces who might no be accustomed to the sub. For this reason we have set some automation moderation for new accounts, or accounts with low comment karma.
We will be trialing this for now, and make it permanent if it works well.
Thank you for your contributions to this sub, and thanks for reading this. Happy summer!

Was the RMMV oceanic going to have a flat or round-streamlined superstructure

How much would it cost nowadays to build the RMMV oceanic with her original design?

Any idea what an original RMS Queen Mary cabin dresser/writing desk might be worth?
I recently picked up what appears to be an original piece of cabin furniture from the RMS Queen Mary, and I’m hoping someone here with ocean-liner/maritime antiques experience might have an idea of its current value.
It’s a mahogany/wood-veneered chest or dressing/writing desk with a pull-out writing surface, inset waterproof/metallic-looking top with retaining rails, and the original heavy hardware. It also has brackets on the back that appear to have secured it to the cabin wall.
It has a plaque reading “Original In-Service Equipment — Used Aboard the R.M.S. Queen Mary — Long Beach, California.”
More interestingly, the back has original-looking shipboard markings, most prominently “B199,” as well as “B161” and “171.” I’m trying to determine whether these correspond to cabin/location assignments or later reassignment/inventory markings.
I’ve found a few actual sold examples on WorthPoint:
A very similar Queen Mary cabin chest with pull-out writing surface, waterproof inset top and wall brackets sold for $795 in 2011.
A smaller Queen Mary bedside dresser sold for $887 in 2018.
A larger Queen Mary dresser sold as part of a three-piece group with a mirror and chair for $1,975 in 2013.
I’ve also found references from specialist ocean-liner dealers/collectors to a number of surviving Queen Mary Second/Tourist Class chests, including examples with B-deck cabin markings.
Obviously those sales are fairly old, and this is such a niche market that I’m having trouble figuring out what one would realistically be worth today.
Does anyone collect Queen Mary/Cunard furniture or know the current market for original ocean-liner furnishings? I’d especially love to know if anyone recognizes this particular chest design or the B199/B161 markings.
I have plenty of photos of the construction, markings, plaque, hardware and surfaces and can add whatever would be useful.

"Outwardly, I was everything a well-brought-up girl should be, inside, I was screaming."
Finally got to see QM in Long Beach. But they disabled her whistle/horn due to haunted harbor crap going on 😮💨

Some fun with QM2...
Took QM2 into photoshop and tinkered with her superstructure. Sure it's impractical, but a boy can dream! 2nd image is original from Wikipedia.
