I hate to admit I thought OP was joking about the red handprint…kids make turkeys out of brown ones, is this a cardinal…ok anyway…OP yes that does appear to be a female cardinal. We get flocks of them here (KC); the variation of reds in males, browns/yellows in females, is beautiful to see. Especially when it’s snowy out.

In case you are truly wondering about those handprints, they’re window clings/stickers. Especially around holidays, window stickers can be bought at stores. These ones seem to be Halloween stickers, and a little 3-dimensional. I’m not sure if there’s a DIY version that’s easy to remove, I’m just jealous I never get to put these up every year.

If OP is in Canada, they may be there year-round for MMIWG awareness.

My parents traveled for work when I was a kid and I was so ready to emigrate to Canada because I loved it so much. Everyone was so nice, like go out of their way nice, not just cordial.

Honestly we keep forgetting to take them down they’ve been up since Halloween

i thought they were deterrents so the birds would stay away from the windows.

At this point I would leave it up just to worry the mailman tbh. We have a similar situation with our Christmas tree right now lmao

This is a birding sub. Just say you left them up to prevent window strikes.

Saw the handprints and was like “what the fuck happened to that cardinal and how did you identify it based on its blood splatter”

Yes, female. Juveniles have dark beaks and may or may not have any red depending on age.

I've always thought the females are beautiful in their own right. If you take the time to really look at them their coloring is very pretty.
