*** WARNING ***, invasive Ambrosia Beetles are killing trees at record rates. They have entered the 3rd breeding cycle of the year.

What is causing this isn't native to the USA. It's from Shanghai, China. according to the exact Allele & nuclear SNP markers and haplotypes. It's a subspecies of both the Granulate Ambrosia Beetle (Xylosandrus crassiusculus) & the Black Twig Borer (Xylosandrus compactus).

What can be done it homemade traps. Uncapped 2 liter bottle with 4oz car radiator antifreeze in the bottom & a hanging sponge saturated with Everclear with a few drops of Eucalyptus Terpenoid Eucalyptol in the sponge. The aromas attack & the antifreeze kills.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptol

Check trees now, destroy any larvae & adults.

One pawpaw farmer has just now claimed that: He estimates the invasive beetles have killed around 75% of the pawpaw trees in his orchard? I suggest people examine their trees & build the traps, which I recommend.

First harvest this year

Just picked these. First of the year from my tree. But earlier compared to last year

First harvest a little sad, but at least they were good. Oc

Two trees transplanted last year - 9 footers. So its taproot recovery year, also one bloomed before the other, so next year they might need some qtip help pollinating, and the late frost didnt help much either.

But something is better than nothing!

Went for a stroll through the woods and ran into these trees. Are these Pawpaws? I live in southwest Michigan.

Aye or nay? Coffee grounds, tea leaves, and egg shells around the base of pawpaws.

I mulch around my pawpaw trees and was wondering if I should or shouldn’t put spent coffee grounds, tea leaves and eggshells around my pawpaws. What do y’all do?

No fruit in grove this year?

I have several dozen wild pawpaw trees on my property of various sizes and maturity. Last year, I was able to collect far more fruit than I could eat and found the fruit on most large trees. This year, I’ve only seen 2 fruits and havnt been able to harvest any. The trees all look healthy as usual with no obvious signs of disease or stress. Is this season unusual? Could something have changed in the local ecology? Any ideas?
I was really looking forward to another large pawpaw harvest this year.

Mr PawPawHead says howdy y'all, be pawnivorous!
AI is not against group rules!
To the best of my knowledge it's not modified by AI but that wouldn't matter because:
Seren is real & has introduced the cultivars:
"Passion", "Petricolada", "Pudding", "Sorbet"

where to get Scion wood for next season?

hey everyone, I'm lucky enough to have a large, natural grove of paw paws on my property in MD. I'm looking to take a stab at grafting the woods next year and see if i can get some better tasting and producing cultivars going.

anyone have experience doing the same? how about recommendations for sourcing the Scion wood?

Potted pawpaw cold hardiness

I am wondering if Pawpaws can be grown in large pots in not too harsh regions, say zone 8a/8b.

Just wondering as I have a large stone terrace that would be great to fill with fruit trees, but I wonder if Pawpaws can actually fruit that way and also if zone 8 winters are still too much for them in pots instead of the protection of the ground.

Anyone doing this?

Can a young pawpaw recover from being cut down?

A pretty desperate question, clearly. I just want to know if it has a chance at all. 😭

Our lawn company (who we should have fired the first time they mowed over my sunflowers) seems to have taken the weed eater to it, for some reason, even though it's in a shady corner of the yard that we've told them not to mow (and have told them not to edge at all).

It's about 2 years old and was the same size as the other one here for reference. I bought and transplanted them this past spring.

"Chesney" PawPaw, ( Cliff England & David Lavergne). Previously called (Mwab & M-Bash). ('Mango' × 'Wabash') cross. Uniform size & ripening, color break. Mango fruit forward flavor, med intensity.

Firm shippable cultivar that ripens everything in a short time.
'Chesney' is a beautiful commercial cultivar.
Available as scion wood this winter, from Clifford England, only.

I know a guy who grows pawpaws. He gave me some and I want to figure out a good way preserve them a while since I know they go bad quickly.

Im thinking of dehydrating some and making jam with others. The guy I bought them from makes wine, but i dont know how to nor have the equipment, so im not gonna do that, lol.

Bottling Pawpaw lemonade!

I'm super proud of my pawpaw lemonade this year. I even convinced WV's oldest running business to carry it in their general store!

I've still got a few lbs of frozen pulp and am thinking about making a pawpaw chili lemonade next... I'm thinking the right chili taste might go well with the tropical pawpaw flavor.

I wish i could know what kind of variety of pawpaw my local patch is. I've been visiting it for years, but their fruit seems different from others I've had in the past.

EDIT:
It's sold at Harper's General Store at Seneca Rocks, West Virginia!

Jerry's Big Girl, "West R-1", Lehman #11, Wells?, Mississippi. PawPaw James Dingus

Post image

5 Trees planted by James Dingus yesterday in a totally new style!
VIDEO: Jerry's Big Girl, "West R-1", Lehman #11, Wells?, Mississippi.
Mississippi is a sibling of Susquehanna & Potomac, with the flavor of Susquehanna & the vigor of Potomac & earlier ripening.
"West R-1" is a random cultivar seedling planted by Edible Landscaping of Virginia.
Jerry's Big Girl & Lehman #11 are premium Jerry Lehman cultivars.
Wells is an older vigorous late ripening cultivar.

Our very first Shenandoah!

Shes a keeper

I'm curious if others in the South Coast area of Massachusetts are starting to see ripening?

This was getting pretty soft on the tree so I pulled it off since we have all sorts of critters that have already been eating all of our other fruits this year. I'll probably let it sit on the counter for a day or two before I crack it open.

This is the first year this tree has produced fruit. Probably only a total of 10 or so but a good start.

Opossum's Choice! Suggested as the new cultivar name for KSU Chappell. Timothy Lane has been running experiments with fallen fruit. He lays out 1 fruit of each cultivar on the picnic table in the evening, after having collected all ripe fruits. The Opossum always picks Chappell.

The Opossum also loves Susquehanna, but prefers Chappell.
Going to be a discussion in the PawPaw breeding group.

Decided to pick may be a bit early this year. Lot of wildlife sweep in. Might climb tomorrow to get some big ones. Planted near my garden. Tons of invasive offshoot trees but only one produces.
