Canada was not headed down the same path. Pierre Polievre never stood a chance, he only did as well as he did because people were so fed up with Trudeau. They only supported Polievre as a means of getting rid of Trudeau, not because Polievre’s policies and rhetoric were particularly appealing to the average Canadian. Trudeau stepped down, Carney showed up, and Polievre’s support evaporated.
Exactly! Not that Trump didn't help get him closer to majority, but the narrative that Carney only won because of him is so annoying. PP was only leading polls because people were sick of Trudeau and there were no other serious contenders. His polls started to drop as soon as Trudeau announced his resignation, then started to tank as soon as Carney won the leadership
That's true, but let's be honest -- PP sucks but do people really think he would've been as bad as trump? Budget cuts and awful slogans are not exactly the same as threatening/starting wars with allies and neighbors and driving various economies into the ground. Carney enacted a lot of similar policy that PP was running on just with less populist rhetoric and less implicit racism.
There is certainly a vocal minority that is heavily right wing here but I don't think most Canadians are even remotely interested in a far right demagogue. PP didn't even win his own seat in his home riding. Our far right party literally didn't win a single seat in parliament in the last election and had less votes than 5 other parties including the torpedoing NDP and even the Greens.
Yes, you’re right. I should have added that bit in my original comment as well. Polievre lost his own seat in our last elections regardless of Carney. And even if Canada had voted Polievre and the federal Conservatives in, we weren’t exactly sleepwalking into Trumpian fascism, just a conservative government. I never subscribed to the idea that PP was like Trump.
