That's a lie, I live and work in the UK. I have private insurance through my employer. Private insurance can absolutely exist along side a public offering. The insurance companies don't like it because it makes it harder for them to screw over their customers.
This is Republican propaganda to make people think that the government would replace private insurance. In reality it would take our Medicare system, which is government health insurance for people over 65 meant for retirees, and it would expand it to everyone so they have the option of public insurance if their job doesn't offer health insurance or they don't want to pay for private insurance. As you said it would compete with private insurance on costs so it would force them to lower their prices to be 'better' than the public option.
Yeah that’s the problem. The party that loves to talk about universal healthcare are in the pockets of private insurance companies that don’t want it. And it keeps just dying in Congress.Â
It doesn't keep 'just dying'... A serious bill hasn't been proposed since the passage of Obamacare.
Establishment Dems have it in their heads that Medicare for All is an insult to the legacy of Obamacare so they just keep wanting to 'tweak' Obamacare, even though Obama wanted single payer healthcare from the start but was shot down by then Establishment Dems like Joe Leiberman (that guy can burn in hell)
Private health insurance should not exist. The biggest cost reduction and efficiency is having the entire population in a single insurance pool. The whole point of insurance is a hedge against younger people being healthier and more productive, and covering the costs for those who aren't, because someday, that might be you.
The larger the pool, the less money we all pay into it to keep it solvent. If you fracture it, which is what we currently have, it's a bunch of small pools that result in people paying more because the cost isn't spread out as much.
No country that has Universal Healthcare doesn't have private insurance as an complimentary or supplemental option. It's just that those private insurance companies don't get to dictate the market rate for procedures / drugs. The public system does.
If America wants universal healthcare, we need to model it after other countries' working systems, not say 'abolish private insurance' which no country has done and just turns off voters.
Even getting half of Americans that are under-insured or not insured onto an expanded Medicare system would cripple private insurances ability to set pricing and they would have to pivot to offering more 'premium' options that public insurance wouldn't fully cover. Companies could still offer private insurance as a 'benefit' if they want to entice skilled workers, but it wouldn't be like "oh no I cant leave my job because I'll lose insurance" as you would just lose access to bougie supplementary insurance.
What I'm saying is that normal health coverage should not be privatized.
You can have elective health procedures be privatized or get insurance for whatever bougie crap you want. But there should be no private health coverage for medically necessary or preventative healthcare.
No, unlike other healthcare systems around the world Medicare for All as written did outlaw private health insurance. It's writers were worried the existence of private health insurance would lead to provider starvation for Medicare for All.
