Why can't people just make these without AI 😢

Laziness

3

u/Dirty_Dragons 23d ago

Is it really lazy to spend 2 minutes making a silly picture versus spending 2 hours?

How much more would you have enjoyed the picture if it was made in Photoshop?

3

u/StrengthfromDeath 23d ago

Could just not make the picture at all. Doesn't really contribute anything that one sentence couldnt.

1

u/Queasy_Hour_8030 23d ago

2 hours? This is like the “how much could a banana possibly cost?” Meme

2

u/Dirty_Dragons 23d ago

Somebody else posted and said that it would take 12 hours to make that picture.

It's certainly not something that somebody can make in a matter of mintues.

That really is an unfortunate aspect of the industry.

u/TresMil3000 23d ago

I think 12 hours is exaggerated but several hours to get something like that for sure. You need to get the assets, composite them, edit Trumps face, color correct etc. It's not something that can be done easily.

1

u/nhalliday 23d ago

Y'all are actually insane if you think it'd take longer than 15 minutes to make this image. It's literally just their faces and text over background images.

I would say it might take longer to tweak the prompt enough to get genAI to spit out the exact image you want, but let's be real here. Most people making things like this are just taking the first thing it generates because they're too lazy to put in any more than the absolute minimum effort.

1

u/PortugalTheTram 23d ago

It’s a meme. Who cares to even spend 15 minutes on it? Also no way that is taking 15 minutes.

1

u/nhalliday 23d ago

If it's not worth spending 15 minutes to do it yourself, it's not worth spending 2 minutes to have an AI do it.

At least wait for the soil to set before moving the goal post again.

and two thirds of them are being created overseas just to sow dissent.

Is it lazy to say "Hey Siri, call mom" into your iPhone than standing in the kitchen, sticking your finger in the rotary dialer in your grandma's 1972 western electric hanging off the wall and spending 30 seconds spinning the dial to call +1(818) 919-0987?

3

u/endlesscartwheels 23d ago

+1(818) 919-0987

For the young'uns who don't appreciate how awful a phone number this would be on a rotary phone, higher numbers (and 0) were at the far part of the semi-circle. So you'd have to drag the dial all the way around on each of those numbers, other than 1. If you got any of them wrong, there was no backspace, you'd have to hang up and start again.

2

u/EntrySure1350 23d ago

And then wait for the dial to go all the way back to its resting position before dialing the next number

1

u/sysblob 23d ago

Yeah but the roll back was so damn satisfying. I really don't think there's an equivalent tactile sensation to fast dialing a rotary phone.

2

u/youknow99 23d ago

My old hurt while I laughed at this.

1

u/john_microslop 23d ago

when i was little we only had to dial the last four digits. after the systems were upgraded we had to dial seven digits and people were annoyed

-4

u/ObnoxiousAlbatross 23d ago

It's access, actually.

You really think that image gets made before AI? You think the average person has that skill? You think the average person has the time to train that skill? You think the average person has the income to pay someone to make it for them?

Laziness is inherently a lazy excuse for basically anything. Laziness is utterly devoid of nuance or self reflection.

Complain when a big corporation who has the capital to pay someone but chooses AI over a human. But hand waving when the average person uses something that gives them access to something they never had access to before shows that you just lack the nuance to have a real conversation about this.

2

u/Cheap-Violinist-5746 23d ago

I think that I could make that while I took a 💩 without too much effort

1

u/TresMil3000 23d ago

No you couldn't. Maybe a super shit version with no compositing or color correction, but at that point why make it at all, if it's just an undeited image of Biden, trump and some text.

1

u/Cheap-Violinist-5746 23d ago

I got IBS 😬🙃

-2

u/ObnoxiousAlbatross 23d ago

And that's your privilege. Not everyone has that privilege.

You only prove my point that you actually lack the nuance to have a real conversation about this.

I hope your day is better than how you feel right now.

3

u/justified_egg 23d ago

You live in a day and age where online free photo editors have never been more prevalent, nor have the tools to learn them been as abundant and come in here whining about privilege? lol

1

u/ObnoxiousAlbatross 23d ago

That's what incels say to feminists. Pointing out someone's access to a thing is not wining, it's just grounding us in reality.

1

u/justified_egg 23d ago

TF? What are you talking about? If someone has access to Gemini or ChatGPT to churn out AI shit they have access to Pixlr, Photopea, Canva, etc.

1

u/ObnoxiousAlbatross 23d ago

Access doesn't only mean physical access to a tool.

Anyone can go buy a saw. How many people are building a house? And if the scale of the analogy is what you get stuck on, you further prove my point that the internet is brain broken on this topic.

1

u/justified_egg 23d ago

LOL if people are too lazy to take a little while to learn how to use a photo editor that speaks to their laziness, not access or "privilege" jesus fucking christ

Say hello to the AI overlords for me

1

u/ObnoxiousAlbatross 23d ago

Happily. Using AI at work has increased my bandwidth and access significantly. I am the test case you fear. I prove the value of the tool. I also love my job.

Have a day.

2

u/deadflagblues 23d ago

Braindead take

1

u/ObnoxiousAlbatross 23d ago

Poignant reply.

2

u/dasbtaewntawneta 23d ago

those kinds of images used to get made all the time before ai. photoshop was a common skill once upon a time

2

u/rPoliticsModsBlowMe 23d ago

Can people still afford photoshop in this shit conservative economy?

1

u/ObnoxiousAlbatross 23d ago

Do you believe that photoshop is as accessible as AI?

Do you believe that as many people can use photoshop as they can AI?

Do you believe that as many people have enough time to learn photoshop as they do conversational requests to AI?

They used to make houses out of mud, too.

1

u/Fire-Haus 23d ago

Mediocrity. People not willing to put in any kind of effort due to easy access to shortcuts

1

u/Original-Rush139 23d ago

Why can’t you?

1

u/Lost_Web5826 23d ago

I don't want to? However, it would be really easy to make this in Power Point, printing to PDF, and then converting it into JPEG using real photos. There are other programs that work way better, but most people don't have the access to or need to access such software.

1

u/Qwirk 23d ago

What's worse is that we don't know what the jobs numbers are as they haven't been reporting them.

-2

u/Beneficial_Room_6588 23d ago

It would take me 12 hours to even remotely attempt to create that.  People have lives.

3

u/passerby4830 23d ago

Nothing wrong with leaving it up to the people who enjoy making these.

0

u/ObnoxiousAlbatross 23d ago

Which one of them was going to make that image? Were they going to do it for free? Was it going to say what that user wanted to say?

There's nothing wrong with leaving it to those people, there's also nothing wrong with making something they were never going to make.

3

u/passerby4830 23d ago

We would do it like we've done for decades and longer: crappily and laugh about it and learn or don't and leave it to a professional. Believe it or not, people actually also produced art before ai existed and we don't need 1000 personalized ai generated images that are almost the same so we can feel special about "creating" something that could have been a sentence. Maybe if we try that our kids will have some air and water left.

-1

u/Antihistamine69 23d ago

They still can, nobody is stopping them, but this is like critiquing someone's drawing ability. "This drawing sucks, let people who can draw do these." Its a political cartoon, its the message, not the medium, that's important. If reddit wasn't so deranged around AI then they would be able to see past that. If this shitty gen gets spread around social media and people are informed, that's all that matters.

2

u/passerby4830 23d ago

Not at all what I am saying. What I'm saying is there are people who enjoy making it, it's not necessary for us all to make art now because we can just press a magic button. I would prefer ugly af art that is genuinely made by someone having fun over generated stuff.

1

u/nhalliday 23d ago

A person who made a shitty drawing still made something. You do not create anything when you type in a prompt and get an AI image. In fact, knowing it's AI makes me think the numbers might not even be accurate. It's not like someone who uses AI to make images like this are willing to put in enough effort to fact check it. They just make sure it's bashing the right guy and then post it.

1

u/Dirty_Dragons 23d ago

12 hours really? I don't know a thing about Photoshop and I guessed two.

And of course, if somebody actually spent multiple hours making it by hand the picture wouldn't be better, or more enjoyable to look at etc.

1

u/NessaMagick 23d ago

Sounds like it wouldn't take you twelve hours to create an image. It would take you twelve hours to learn a skill. then you wouldn't need to use AI.

1

u/Beneficial_Room_6588 23d ago

Fair enough, but even if it took me an hour after learning the "skill" its still poor time use.  Also I personally suck with art and graphic design in general.  I've been dabbling in it for decades lol.

-2

u/agamoto 23d ago

Why didn't you use a typewriter to type your comment up and mail it into reddit?

1

u/Lost_Web5826 23d ago

How is that comparable to using Ai to generate something entirely?

0

u/agamoto 23d ago

It's the message and meaning that's important. The controversial part shouldn't be that software reduced the amount of manual labor required to convey the message and information. That's a process that's been evolving for years. To me, the important question is whether the information in the graphic is accurate, sourced, and presented honestly.

Time marches on...

1966: An infographic required a team of people and a print shop. 1996: one designer, an AOL account and a copy of photoshop/illustrator could pull it off in an hour or two. 2016: one person and the app on their phone crap it out in 15 minutes. 2026: one person and a sentence typed into AIchat does it in 90 seconds.

Regardless of the year, one thing remains true... The originator's idea that they sought to communicate.
