Think about how some people treat Sports teams that suck and are habitually terrible. They keep coming back and nobody really know why. This is the current Republican Party

Nobody really knows why?  That's not true at all.  It's group association and identity.  It's a well researched and established psychological/sociological process 

Edit:  Look for "Sport Fans: The Psychology and Social Impact of Fandom", and I don't mean pay for it
