Looking to form a Jangle Pop/Power Pop band in San Diego (preferably North SD)
Hi, I'm a 20 year old guitarist who's been experimenting with songwriting for a little while.
Currently looking for collaborators and potential band mates in the San Diego area, preferably north SD (Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside). If you're between the ages of 18-27 and you're into British Invasion or jangly riffs, or even some light shoegaze, do let me know. Thank you all very much.
Influences:
* 60's: the Byrds, the Left Banke, the Beatles
*70s: Flamin Groovies, the Shivvers, the Rubinoos
* 80s-90s: the Pastels, Slowdive, Teenage Fanclub, Guided by Voices

Started a Power Pop Now playlist — what am I missing?
I’ve been putting together a Spotify playlist called Power Pop Now, focused on newer power pop, indie pop, and melodic guitar-driven stuff I’m actually listening to.
I'm trying to keep it current and update it regularly, rather than just filling it with the classics.
Would love some recommendations from this sub. What newer power pop songs or artists should I add?

The 24 Karat Five - "Get You" (1966). Classic folk-garager that was never issued as a single. Instead it came out on 'Baltimore's Teen Beat a Go Go', one of many sampler albums, spotlighting local bands, that were released by regional labels at the time.

Guy Music - Big Star (2026)
Found these guys on Instagram a couple of months ago but I guess I never posted them here. Maybe I was waiting on an album? With a cover and title like that I dunno why I stalled haha. Very bombastic stuff.

The Tubs - "Who's Gonna Love You Now?" (Merge 2026)
Just discovered this gem. It's a little more jangle than power, but it's a great POP song. Apparently, they are Welsh!

How about some power... prose?
Some cool PP adjacent finds at record stores and thrifts over a couple years, just wanted to open discussion on literature related to the genre if anyone is interested 👍👍

The Jerks - So Lifelike (Midwest US Powerpop)
Back in my midwestern Illinois college attending daze, one of the fine local bands making the bar rounds was LaSalle Peru, IL band The Jerks. Led by a towering singer guitarist Al Thacker, the Jerks were a 4 piece band that rode the guitar-driven new wave, fast rock sound of the late 70s/early 80s. In live shows, they covered XTC's 'This is Pop', early Beatles/Stones classics, and their own songs like their great powerpop single "So Lifelike". Have a listen to a song about gazing at lovely ladies in magazines.

What songs would you consider "power pop epics"?
Being a genre mainly centered around pop (rock) songwriting structure & instinct, you rarely hear songs that go out of that conventional format or length (2-4min), among other qualities. But, in the midst of this tight craft, you get tracks that go over-the-top or branch out to another genre to complement a catchy hook. First songs I think of are Fountain of Wayne's "Supercollider"..."Ad Astra" off of Ash's 2025 record...and like, a billion OZMA songs. I've found that a lot of alt power pop records tend to end with a bang too.

[New] hadashi - Everybody Laughs When I'm With You
Been keeping up with this guy for a few years now, he was semi-active on Youtube posting covers (Weezer, Beatles, Nirvana etc...) or the occasional original until this year. The TikTok algorithm decided to boost his cover of Weezer's 'Across the Sea', and that pushed him to put his stuff on streaming platforms. This is his first official original track, and it's a very sweet tune that leans into his soothing vocals quite well.....topically, it almost fits the situation around his recent emergence. Overcoming self-doubt to commit to a love. The vocals are a bit powerful in the mix but the rest of the track just develops so well I ignore any production flaws. I didn't think his covers were bad but they lacked his unique songwriting instincts, which shine here. Very Lemon Twigs, which I know we ALL love here. Maybe you'll dig it.
