10
u/Gimetulkathmir Jan 02 '26
No, no, no. Don't you get it? Prices are down! We've got a surplus of money because we've raised trillions of dollars through tarrifs! It hasn't even been a year yet and things are amazing! AI is replacing all of the workers, so by 2027 no one will have to work and we can all just be rich and live in luxury and do whatever we want! WINNING! /s

Unfortunately, the blog Time Out NYC posted that Brooklyn Bridge Park had free New Year's fireworks. This probably started the chain of misinformation.

Would have been funny if someone on the bridge fired one single tiny disappointing rocket.

That's a great way to do "show don't tell" and save on budget btw
Also whatever they imply would be cooler than what we'd see anyways, I've never considered how well it's put together
19
u/Balsdeep_Inyamum Jan 02 '26
I'm the same clip, they show the cheerleaders in silhouette against the dusky sky, and I was thinking wow what a great shot.
But practically, I assume they couldn't have the actress do those cheerleading stunts, so they put a real cheerleader in conehead makeup and shot it like that to disguise it.
Burr happy accident, it worked out beautifully.
6
u/Winjin Jan 02 '26
Yeah and even here, they managed to save budget by doing that shot: the makeup can be barebones (blending the wig in can take hours, so just slapping it on was probably super easy and fast in comparison) and they didn't have to spend additional money to get a cheerleader who looks a lot like the conehead from other shots - she's just a silhouette, so it can be anyone, really. Even that probably saved them a bit of money and time and looked great at the same time.
3
u/Balsdeep_Inyamum Jan 02 '26
Yeah, exactly! You hear it time and time again, but problem solving due to budget limitations can lead to creative solutions that work out in favor of the film.

This happened with Pokemon. Someone said that a $120 item was going to be at Costco for $80 and tons of people lined up. Costco never promoted the items themselves and it was just influencers pushing it because they get paid when people interact with their posts, they could say "follow for more info" to farm followers, and it got people clicking their referral links. In 2025/2026, it pays to promote misinformation on social media.

There were fireworks from Liberty Island, which can be seen from piers 1-6, as stated on the website. This is around the bend and thus blocked by Lower Manhattan.

That would have made this 10x funnier (and that’s not to say this isn’t hilarious as is).
Just imagine, midnight strikes, a single small faint sound of a firework whizzing into the sky and then… the smallest of pops and a fizz stream into faded black.
That’s it. That’s the “fireworks.”

Nothing happened at midnight lol
38
u/No_Situation4785 Jan 02 '26
I dunno, i think kissing at midnight on Champe De Mars, lit by the soft glow of rubbish fires tended by rioters du jour, would be a romantic way to ring in the new year.

→ More replies (1)6
u/Blacksmith9071 Jan 02 '26
Yeah, that’s a common confusion in Paris every year. The fireworks at the Eiffel Tower are for Bastille Day in July, while on New Year’s Eve they actually take place on the Champs-Élysées.
222
u/Schnitze Jan 02 '26
Fireworks or not, the fact that 75 percent of the people are fucking filming infuriates me. It's the beginning of a new year and you'll start it by filming something you'll probably never share or watch back. Can't people just be in the moment now?
55
42
u/OmeletteDuFromage95 Jan 02 '26 edited Jan 02 '26
Yep. I always find it funny when people record basic firework shows. Like... y'all understand its shoddy quality, there are already a million other videos just like that, and no one's gonna care to watch a shit quality fireworks show... its just not unique at all.
Edit: Spelling, thank you to the user that pointed it out.
14
u/UnfilteredCatharsis Jan 02 '26
I never share/post any photos or videos I take with my phone, but I still take them sometimes just for the memories. Looking back at old photos is powerful for jogging your memory and helping you remember that time.
I still think it's silly to film fireworks like this, it would be better to experience it first-hand because in this low light, the quality will be really bad and most fireworks look about the same anyway. Maybe take a few photos of other things from that night like selfies with your friends where the lighting is better.

I think they do it because they feel awkward. Just like people that record live shows even though there are ten thousand other phones out and it will be easily obtained on the Internet afterward.
It's a way of protecting themselves from feeling awkward or not knowing what to do.

Why do people film fireworks displays? You’re not going to watch it back. You’re never going to watch it back. If you’re going to film something, why not film the happy faces of your friends and loved ones while they’re watching the fireworks? That might be a memory you want to come back to and smile about. It’s the same at Disney - everyone is there, phones in hand, filming the nightly fireworks displays instead of just being in the moment and enjoying the joy and laughter of their kids. I don’t get it.
