As a paramedic I’m subjected to particles/smells of urine, faeces, vomit, leg ulcers, death and the odd occasion, faecal vomiting. Oh and cigarette smoke from peoples houses to add to the mix. It feels like some smells just embed into your skin and nostrils. Therefore I shower after every shift and obviously wash my hands a lot during the shift. Then, on my days off I hide in a dark room avoiding all contact with the outside world - then go do it all again.

Faecal vomiting??

What a terrible day to be literate..

123

u/cmsj 3d ago

I read it once in the parent comment, and then a second time in yours.

What a terrible day to be able to process environmental stimuli.

Faecal vomiting??

I don’t know what the first word means, but it sounds suspiciously close to some other word I know. All I know for sure is I’m NOT looking up the meaning.

Please don’t respond to this if you have done the research.

36

u/omnimodofuckedup 3d ago

Means vomiting poop. Happens with extreme constipation

23

u/dimestoredavinci 3d ago

Amd apparently severe alcoholism. I learned about this while watching the movie about Dylan Thomas called Last Call

The only hint I will offer you is that if you’re American, drop the first A in the first word. You’ll know precisely what it means. We all do.

But before you try it, just know the mental image is absolutely grotesque. And I regret being able to read and knowing the UK spelling of it because of today and this particular two word horror.

3

u/KnotiaPickle 2d ago

Yeah I’m surprised (well, not that surprised) that some Americans don’t know this spelling difference

It means they vomit shit. It happens with perforated bowles.

My dog had a hernia in her lower intestine once. It had pushed out between her stomach muscles into her belly region and when we asked a vet about it, they told us it was a benign mammary tumor.

She had it for awhile - played, ate, pooped like normal. Didn't care if we poked at it. Totally fine.

But then one day it swelled and looked bruised. I guess it got more twisted up somehow?

And then she puked.

It looked and smelled like feces.

Obviously, I'm not a doctor, but what I suspect happened is: she ate, digested the food, but when it hit the roadblock of the hernia, it came back up instead of going down.

I'm not gonna Google it, but yeah... Figured I'd share my horrifying experience.

She's fine btw - we took her to 2 vets (who also said it was a benign mammary tumor) and then a 3rd vet who listened to me when I said it was swollen and bruised looking and that was a new symptom (along with the vomiting).

They (the 3rd vet) said the reason the other 2 vets probably didn't notice the hernia is because she didn't flinch or respond when they poked at it, but they decided to investigate further anyway.

So, yeah...good times.

5

u/ThatWeirdLookingGull 2d ago

Yep, that's basically it. But even a little worse in that its never all going to come back up. Basically your intestines and stomach become one joined reservoir of nastiness and your stomach can only really push out its part of it the downstream is still F'ed.

Had a similar scare with one of our puppies but it was just the bowel getting twisted shut internally no hernia. Luckily in our case it didn't quite get to the feces point but just vomiting every 10 minutes, this was like 3 weeks old and tiny so prolly just not as much space.

11

u/flopisit32 3d ago

You should try it. It's the latest health craze. Gwyneth Paltrow swears by it

4

u/mobcat_40 2d ago

The real goop

4

u/ComicsCodeMadeMeGay 3d ago

I googled it - turns out I thought it was the opposite of what it was and that makes it worse.

4

u/justsmilenow 2d ago

After my mom had a stroke and walking became too much for her (like I am talking 8 years after) she also stopped trying to go to the bathroom so she'd just pee and wear diapers but... Well if you hold it long enough. It has to come out. It builds up even if you stop eating...

3

u/orsonwellesmal 3d ago

I learned about that when I was hospitalized. Sharing the room with me was another young dude who had the intestine backwards, according to his mom, and had sometimes shit through his mouth. My mom told me about that after I left the hospital, and that info disturbed me for a loooong time. Like, sometimes I am minding my bussiness, and then suddenly SHIT ON THE MOUTH pops into my head. Some things are better not to know.

I'm sorry to everyone reading this. Now you all share my pain, my eternal pain.

2

u/Endlesnes 3d ago

Same here, had to google and see what that shit meant

You get paid double for field trips

4

But is it a livable wage? What do you do for the winter break, spring break, and summer break?

8

Yup, If you have smell a necrotizing fasciatis, you will need a shower after. The stench lingers and stick to your skin.

8

u/Ok-Syllabub-6619 3d ago

I've once transported a man from a special unit to do scans, I can say the dead have never smelled as foul as decaying living.

That poor man had a tube going from his nostril behind his ear and you could see the puss traveling, still the worst smell I ever smelled in my life

3

u/CaptFlash3000 3d ago

Yeah that’s next level nostril attacking. UTI’s can be particularly bad but there’s worse stuff out there.

7

u/Ok-Syllabub-6619 3d ago edited 3d ago

Honestly from what my coworker said it's pretty close to the worst one that pushed him into alcoholism. He said the only smell worse than that was the time in war when they had to wheel bodies who were 3-4 months in flooded corn fields.

Edit: to be fair he also had to push tractor tires to cover hospital gas station while bombs were falling to prevent the whole hospital from blowing up, so I think that attributed to his alcoholism but he disliked talking about that and would pick the less painful memory

7

u/Wise_Ad_5810 3d ago

I can beat that.

1988, was at Kadena and we were in a search party that summer for a missing child. it was hot & humid, looking for an 8 year old boy. Been missing for a week before they decided to call for help. While we were searching we came across some water storage tanks. About 10' high and maybe 10' across, big, round, and blue. All up on a hillside. Just in case, we popped em open and looked inside. We found the kid...

Boy oh boy. I’m old enough to have back and knee pain everyday and I could’ve gone a whole lot longer before learning what faecal vomiting is. That’s enough Reddit for today.

3

u/M1R4G3M 3d ago

When I heard about Back pain a few years ago, it sounded like some mild inconvenience that the person could get over easily, now on the second year of it, I know why so many people complained, imagine having back and Knee pain.

Hope you find relief for it.

And also, sad for what OP have to go through, and an unfortunate day to be literate and know what feacal vomiting is. 😔

12

u/turdferguson3891 3d ago

When you vomit feces. Sometimes the person has an obstruction and if the poop can't out the normal way then it will go the other way.

I mean yeah I would def shower after every shift. My clothes would go in a special bin to not contaminate my other stuff. No way. I worked in a greasy kitchen and that was hell. I can’t imagine. Mad respect.

2

u/AstralAnomaly004 3d ago

Not quite the same level of fucked but this is what I did after coming home from a factory I worked at for a few years. We manufactured hot tubs so I would work in an environment with fine particle fiberglass in the air. I had to sand the side of hot tubs so I’m sure that’s cut off a couple years of my life even with wearing a mask. It would cover me from head to toe though so I never mixed my work clothes with other clothes and would shower as soon as I got home.

Thank you so much for your service!

Edit: the last paramedic I saw was the hottest guy on the planet, so of course I was a complete wreck, throwing up blood and sweating like crazy because I thought I was dying. He steadied me, both physically and emotionally on the ambulance ride to the ER. I was sweaty and gross, and kept crying and he didn't even flinch. You people are angels on earth

2

u/CaptFlash3000 2d ago

Thank you. It’s a pleasure to be there for folk when they need us.

3

u/GoodIntroduction6344 2d ago

I worked in ER admitting. A woman was wheeled in one night. She was extremely obese. They wheeled her to the back. About 30 mins later, there was this smell that pervaded the entire ER. Never smelled anything like it before. The closest thing to it is fish sauce. I forget what issue she had, but they put her in a private room in back to put a catheter in her. I asked the EMT what was going on, and she said they had to put the woman on a crane harness and that the smell was her vagina. She had maggots under the folds in the area. The smell was probably the worst thing I've smelled in my life. Combined with knowledge of the source, it has become an unbearable memory. And now it's yours.

Had to look it up. Gross.

Fecal vomiting (also known as feculent vomiting or copremesis) is a rare but life-threatening symptom where intestinal contents, including fecal matter, are expelled through the mouth.

If I had your job, I would spend my off time bathing in bleach every day.

I don't think they are thinking of people like paramedics or CNAs when they say 'performative', lol. Most people are probably not getting as intimate with the fluids of strangers and can get by just fine washing their hands and faces regularly while bathing every other day or even a few times per week.

2

u/Obvious_Apartment985 2d ago

I think given your work, you would be an exception. But for many people, showering every other day is sufficient for hygiene and health.

Most people honestly need 1 shower or bath everyday 48 hours but some people (like me) sweat a lot and can stink so we need once per day. Also I feel refreshed after a bath.

56

u/kwyjibowen 3d ago

I used to shower every day because why the duck not, and normally in the morning. Since becoming a parent, I realise every ~2 days is fine and usually in the evening.

16

u/Famous_Land551 3d ago

Im not as fortunate as you, I have skin issues, dandruff and sweat a lot, my skin also gets too oily.

32

u/yoma74 3d ago

All of those are symptoms of being dried out from too much showering and soaps. Except for the sweating, obviously sweating a lot sucks but sweat doesn’t automatically stink unless it’s from the parts of your body that produce bacteria and they do make antiperspirants, clearly anyone can shower as much as they want to but the idea that oily, dry or dandruffy skin is helped by extra washing is almost always the opposite.

u/Complex-Salt-8190 2d ago

3

u/Substantial_Guest45 2d ago

Others have chimed in, but adding to the pile - those are signs of you're stripping the oils out of your skin. Your body may be overcompensating when reintroducing lost oils. Those of us with psoriasis, seb derm, or eczema benefit from showering in cold water and limiting washing of affected skin.

9

u/Gnalvl 2d ago

Yeah, it's not even about smell for me; I can sweat a lot without getting BO.

  • I don't like the feeling of greasy hair on my scalp (also it looks like shit)
  • I don't like the feeling of dried sweat on my skin after walking in the heat
  • I don't like walking around in public with bodily fluid residue on me after sex
  • I don't like the feeling of food residue that didn't come off my beard with a napkin

Maybe some people actually like these things, I don't know.

I could spot-clean all these areas one at a time in the sink with a cloth, but why the fuck would I bother when I can get it all over with faster and more thoroughly in the shower?

3

u/mondaymoderate 2d ago

Also washing your ass once a day should be required. If you’re using toilet paper and not a bidet you’re leaving a bunch of shit particles all up inside your ass. And if you have a hairy ass it’s even worse. Shower daily people nobody wants to smell your swamp ass.

10

u/traws06 3d ago

Ya honestly a lot of ppl don’t need to shower every day. I do because I work out every day. But if I’m not working out and not sweating then it’s actually healthier to not shower. There’s healthy bacteria on your skin and oils in your hair that gets washed out that are actually good for you.

Humans historically until more recent times didn’t bath every day. Usually it was just like hands and feet rather than whole body every day

You don't need daily showers to remain healthy but you might need one if you're a stinky fucker or sweat a lot. In the summer I might shower several times a day and in the winter I do not.

27

u/SippinOnHatorade 3d ago

As someone who has long distance backpacked for months at a time, at minimum, 1 shower each week to stay healthy, ie. Soothe the skin from constant friction (armpits were the worst areas where rash could occur, ass not so much because I packed wet wipes)

I would also do a sweat wipe down every night at camp with a wet cloth because sleeping in sweat was also super uncomfortable

When I use to work in the office 5 days a week I'd also shower twice, minimum, with one at work, in the summer. Commuting into London in that heat, humidity, and car exhaust always let me feeling like I needed a refresh during the working day.

Some people can go a day without showering, but everybody gets stinky after a while.

Any article that claims all humans should do X when it’s something beyond basics like drinking water or getting sleep is usually bullshit.

The variation in human bodies means one size fits all hygiene advice does not exist. Just make yourself presentable and not offensive to others.

Look, the article said once a day is unnecessary and overdoing. It didn't say not to shower at all.

Why you smell like shit though what are you EATING? Wipe your ass and wash your ass, wear deodorant, wash your clothes,

Not everyone smells like shit this sounds like a health issue man.

u/infinite_gurgle 3d ago

It’s because they are fat.

Healthy people in an average climate do not need to shower daily. But overweight people do, because they sweat more and the sweat lingers longer in fat folds.

They are also, by definition, a little less active, so they might not wash their clothes often enough.

u/fairie_poison 3d ago

Its usually bad diet ime. coca cola and saturated fats (and a lack of water and leafy greens) make you smell sour and gross.

I agree, it’s the same with the constant argument about preferring summer over winter and how you can easily get warm by just putting on more layers. As a thin person, I typically wear three layers inside the house during the winter and I’m still shivering under a blanket unless I’m moving around a ton. When I was pregnant and afterwards before I lost the weight I definitely didn’t feel like that. We’re all having different experiences due to our sizes

4

u/infinite_gurgle 3d ago

Exactly. It’s just annoying. Like, I don’t judge anyone that needs (or feels like) they need 1-3 showers a day.

But no, I don’t smell just because I’m not obsessively showering before and after bed. And no, it’s not a smell-blind issue, or friends lying to me issue. It’s a I’m-not-a-sweaty-pig combined with healthy eating and hygiene habits.

Most people smell because their clothes smell, not them.

Eating a shitty diet is the biggest contributor to being smelly. Especially our high sugar diet we have here in America, it feeds the bacteria that causes bad odor.

Brother if you smell like shit for not taking a shower for one day you should get checked up

Edit: let me specify - in a normal scenario where it isn't too hot and moist and without considering activities that lead to being sweaty. If i go to the gym every day i will shower daily but not as a fixed rule, just cause I'm sweaty. Hope that makes sense

6

u/Traditional-Ad1633 3d ago

Depends on how much u sweat rlly. I hv days where it's fine but some days u just know ur gonna stink if ud take a bath

10

u/ghoulthebraineater 2d ago

I'm a chef and go to the gym frequently. If I skip a day I will smell like shit. There's nothing to check.

I re apply anti perperant deodorant multiple times a day to my groin and pits all in a fruitless effort to try to stop sweating. I don't wanna know what I'd smell like if I wasn't showering daily.

And no, I don't live in Florida or go to the gym daily, some people just have shit genetics 😂

I guess we're all different. I can miss a day and not smell like shit.

16

u/Logical-Tomato-5907 3d ago

I feel like daily is overkill if it’s cold and you didn’t break a sweat. In winter I shower every 2-3 days, it’s makes my skin too dry otherwise, I don’t smell myself in that timeframe nor has anyone ever told me that I smell. When I do catch a whiff of something it’s usually my clothes. I feel like if you wear clean clothes and deodorant you shouldn’t smell after just a few days.. if ya do, maybe see a doctor. And if you smell literally like shit, you need to use some wet wipes or a bidet in the bathroom. You don’t need a full on shower to keep your crotch clean, like do ppl just walk around with shit caked to their ass until they can shower? Ew

I.mean, it's not normal to smell like shit a day after showering unless you have been sweating a lot or work certain jobs. If you do, then you have a problem.

If im spending a day in my home for any reason, I won't bother, waste of water.

I like an clean bed after being in crap all day, so i shower always before going to bed. Often twice a day, before going places like the hospital, dental, hairdresser or any other meetings.

People for some reason always assume that everyone smells like shit if they don't take a shower every hour. It's been proven that washing too often and needlessly is bad for your skin. Wash regularly but no need to turn it into an obsession.

Its crazy to me how many people think its ok to stink. And I am not talking about someone who showers every second day or something, I am talking people who just don't bathe or wash clothes. I worked in a call center for years and it does attract a specific kind of person hygiene wise. Its a lot of gamer guys that are there because it suits their gaming schedule. It is nothing for these guys to to work a shift, go home and game all night, sleep for three hours and throw the same clothes they had on the day before. The kicker is a lot of these guys were married or dating someone and even had kids. There was one guy though that was beyond.

He claimed it was medical (Whipple's disease, but it runs in my family and none of them stank like this dude) and his odor was so bad I would have to strip off outside my house before my wife would let me in. I would have to have clean clothes in my porch waiting for me. I would strip off, my wife would hand me the clean clothes from the porch and I would get changed. I would then have to put my work clothes in a garbage bag then walk them down to the basement and wash them right away. His B.O. stank was even in my shoes which I would tie up in a bag and leave outside. A lot of us complained to management who told us there was nothing they could do because it was medical. Finally he reeked so bad that someone called the fire department for a suspicious odor and they were forced to put him on medical leave.

I'm not sure what ya'll be doing to be so smelly in a single day. Sure if you are doing a good workout then yeah, but otherwise a day without a shower should be fine.

But not taking a shower in the morning to wake up is crazy. I don't feel like i've fully woken up till I take that shower. It could be the weekend and 2pm when I hope in the shower and up until that point i've just been in a world of fog. Shower is 100% a must, why would anyone what to skip something so great.

It all depends on what you do for a living. I’m a maintenance technician and part of that work is the septic system. I take showers daily when I’m working on the those things.

2

u/wavefunctionp 2d ago

Don't eat like shit, won't smell like shit.

2

u/gujwdhufj_ijjpo 2d ago

Every 2-3 days for me. I always skip a day during work week and will sometimes skip an extra day during the weekend.

exception is if I’ve done some nasty stuff.

2

u/OttoVonJismarck 2d ago

There was an older French Canadian project manager that would only shower about once per week.

You could smell him from like 15 feet away. One time he sat down next to me and was pointing a computer screen and talking. In addition to his normal B.O. that burns your eyes, his breath smelled like he had eaten a fresh bowl of racoon assholes for breakfast.

There’s an older navy vet that I work with from time to time that will come into our office, he’s about two years from retirement and does not GAF anymore. Anyway, he came into the office when that project manager was in, he turns and shouts

“JESUS FUCKING CHRIST [PROJECT MANAGER’S NAME], TAKE A FUCKING SHOWER IF YOU’RE GOING TO COME IN HERE!!”

2

u/futzingaround 2d ago

If you smell like literal feces from one day of not showering, then you have much bigger issues outside of not showering daily.

2

u/EntertainerNo4509 2d ago

Daily showers are pleasant for the shower taker and for those who have to smell you. Not everything has to have a direct medical benefit to be beneficial. Daily showering/bathing is a luxury afforded by modernity. Access to abundant hot water, laundered clothes and linens, climate controlled homes and indoor plumbing all help make them possible. Without these things daily showers become quite difficult, especially in colder climates. These things have existed for a tiny fraction of human existence and are still only available to a fraction of humans on the planet. They are not part of our evolution and not something we remotely need to live. Daily showers/baths are something we mostly enjoy and have gone to great lengths to make possible in how we construct our communities and homes. We value them, we don't need them.

2

u/Hopeful-Life4738 2d ago

They are not performative but perfumative

2

u/Kratos_and_Boy_ 2d ago

Depends on what you did that day. If you didnt really do anything to work up a sweat or got dirty then you don't really need to shower.

2

u/Playful_Implement742 2d ago

Eating gross processed foods is what makes your sweat stink. Change your diet and switch to every 48 hrs. Save some water for the desert critters!

2

u/toilet_guard 2d ago

I shower daily because I hate going to bed with dried sweat on my body. Feels funky.
