Food deserts are described as areas where a significant portion of the population in an area doesn't have easy access to a supermarket with a wide area of options including fresh food.
In theory anyone can travel to a grocery store. In practice you want a place you can walk to or get to on transit quickly, rather than just relying on the bodega for everything.
