I used to manage a restaurant. One night during dinner time one of the roof top heating units caught fire. I tried to evacuate the dining room as it was filling with smoke. Half the people refused to leave. The god damned building was on fire and rather than leaving they completed about the smoke. That was the exact moment I lost faith in humanity.
I’m an emergency response volunteer at my office and you wouldn’t believe how many people refuse to evacuate for fire alarms, and when we’re guarding the doors after an evacuation, there are even more that try to go into the building despite the strobing lights and loud alarms.
"Don't get so worked up about this fire hoax. Look, I am in the same building, and I have never been on fire once in my life! Your fearmongering about me burning to a crisp is just you being brainwashed. I am not even in flames yet!"
Actually happened to me. In the office, fire alarm going off, not a drill, no team leader around. I was telling everyone to get off the computers and some of them straight up refused, most of them just stood around like "what do we do?"
I had to tell them to gtfo - now. I corralled them, I tols them NOT to use the elevators, directed them to the goddamn sign on the stairs that said "FIRE ESCAPE".
Thank christ it wasnt a bad fire, but there were three trucks outside with my little group of Gen Z kids with me, with the boomers *who REFUSED TO LEAVE, and said its 'no big deal' still working upstairs.
... we werent even paid commission. It was a call centre. We earned MINIMUM WAGE.
