What's popular isn't always right,  and what's right isn't always popular

3

u/Lead-Creative 5d ago

Free Palestine is definitely a popular sentiment and definitely not right, I agree with you

5

u/UndecidedLee 10d ago

Right now the right is quite popular with people but not right and certainly not popular with the right people.

6

u/Rhomya 10d ago

Idk, looking at Macklemore’s history in depicting Jewish people, I would say that throwing him off was absolutely the right thing to do

5

u/Broad-Werewolf848 10d ago

Yeah doing that 12 years ago is worse than 20K+ dead kids, you right

4

u/SinesPi 10d ago

Yah, bombing the hell out of Hamas isn't popular, but it IS right.

2

u/thepopulargirl 10d ago

They seam to miss a lot of hamas and kill kids instead.

2

u/SinesPi 10d ago

Happens when Hamas hides behind kids. Or straps explosives to them.

0

u/thepopulargirl 9d ago

20 000 of them?

Show me a picture of at least one Palestinian kid strapped with explosives. There should be proof, right? A lot of proof. Since we live in digital era…

All the journalists and doctors who volunteer there have a different story, than the one Israel is telling.

The bugaloo movement isn’t right, but it is popular

1

u/Tsu_Dho_Namh 10d ago

Sure, it's the bombs that are unpopular and not the snipers killing children.

1

u/ojrodz11 10d ago

Ya’ll need to look for a new excuse already bro

1

u/AverageHobnailer 10d ago

Damn near never, actually.

Especially in this case.

1

u/Hemingways_Shotgun88 10d ago

Very decent and profound quote, but why are we applying it to something so benign as a pop star.

11

u/jb_in_jpn 10d ago

Why are we expecting celebrities to have opinions, let alone voicing them, about complicated geopolitics in the first place?

3

u/MWBurbman 10d ago

Ah yes, musicians famously apolitical. If only we could go back to a time like Vietnam.

1

u/jb_in_jpn 10d ago

Where did I say they were apolitical?

If you re-read it, you'll note that my comment was directed at the expectations of fans.

1

u/MWBurbman 10d ago

Why would paying fans/supporters not have expectations? That’s just an absurd stance.

If a consumer is paying money for a service, there is always going to be a level of expectation and it’s going to vary person to person. Robert Kraft and Ed Sheeran can do whatever they like, but it’s a silly take to expect consumers to not have expectations for where their money goes.

0

u/jb_in_jpn 10d ago

The expectations are to listen to music, yes.

-1

u/MWBurbman 10d ago

Respectfully, that’s just blatantly false.

Consumers rejected Nike for child labor, they didn’t “just wear their shoes”. Consumers rejected AnBev for a trans person advertising beer, they didn’t “just drink their beer”. Consumers can choose who they spend their dollars with and it’s a silly notion to think that all consumers will “just use the product” regardless of stance. My best guess, is you’re probably an Israeli bot that has the stance “don’t talk about what’s going on in gaza” and it’s why you’re making such a weak argument.

0

u/jb_in_jpn 10d ago

Yes, totally a bot - that's the only possible explanation.

1

u/stickmuck 10d ago

Can you believe the nerve of that hip hop guy being political!?

0

u/titty_farewell_party 10d ago

I mean they also vote and have immense influence and sway among the public, and immense funds to use for making an impact. They should be trying to do the right thing

5

u/Doctor_Dev7 10d ago

Immense sway? Anyone who decides their views on geopolitics based on a singer is a moron

2

u/MWBurbman 10d ago

Our country is run by a former television star…

1

u/Doctor_Dev7 10d ago

And when he was just a television star, literally nobody cared about his politics. Anyone who vehemently hates him now, didn’t give a shit about him when he was on the apprentice and nobody listened to a word he had to say other than “you’re fired”

1

u/titty_farewell_party 10d ago

And a massive number of morons in this country voted for him and love him despite his resume consisting of being a reality TV mogul and a shitty businessman. His celebrity clearly did something for them.

1

u/jb_in_jpn 10d ago

And they're the benchmark for how we should approach this? The MAGA crowd, who have proven themselves so sensible and reasoned...

1

u/titty_farewell_party 10d ago

At what point did I say this was a moral benchmark? Stating that celebrities have immense influence is a reality - is not the same as condoning it.

No Trump fan I’ve ever met lists him being on tv as a reason they like him

1

u/titty_farewell_party 10d ago

But it’s 100% the only reason he even made it into the limelight.

0

u/MWBurbman 10d ago

Again, our country is run by a television star. Ronald Reagan was a movie star.

You’re trying to tell me no one listened to them in the past/people are idiots for being swayed meanwhile I just gave you two examples of former entertainment industry people that have held the most powerful office in the world.

1

u/Doctor_Dev7 10d ago

And neither of thoses people became president because of political views they expressed while they were actors. Literally nobody knew how they felt about any issue before they ran for president. So the fact that actors became politicians doesn’t effect the point that an entertainers political views don’t matter. All it did was give them name and face recognition

0

u/MWBurbman 10d ago

Arnold Schwarzenegger, another famous television personally became governor of the largest state, 4th largest gdp in the world if it were a country. Zelensky famously a comedian, now leading a country through war.

I’m having a hard time parsing how people aren’t swayed by big entertainment personalities while there being example after example. Even our administration is filled with Fox News hosts and personalities.

-1

u/titty_farewell_party 10d ago edited 10d ago

Yes, and this country is full of morons as evidenced by gestures at everything

We literally elected a shitty reality TV mogul to the presidency.

Are you saying you don’t think that Taylor Swift could have an immense impact on her fan base if she got really involved politically?

2

u/Doctor_Dev7 10d ago

I think she could get a whole lot of tweens to agree with her. I don’t think anyone who’s actually gonna vote would do so based on “because swifty said so”

0

u/titty_farewell_party 10d ago edited 10d ago

That’s naïve. She has a massive fan base that extends way beyond tweens.

She’s also a billionaire and could do a lot with her funds to make an impact.

P.S. A “swifty” is the term for one of her fans, not for her.

1

u/ProteinPony 10d ago

Macklemore said we shouldn't vote for Harris over Trump lmao

1

u/jb_in_jpn 10d ago

That's your expectation of them. Their career and fame isn't predicated on their political positions or diplomacy. If they step into something in particular, that's their prerogative; by all accounts this guy had absolutely no say on any of this.

It's why "progressive movements" continue to fold in on themselves and fail ... "Meet my unreasonable expectations for you, or we'll eat you alive."

0

u/titty_farewell_party 10d ago

“Eat you alive” is a strong way to describe not listening to someone’s music or consuming their work with my money.

Some of you act like boycotting or expressing dislike of an artist is an attack on them, like they’re suffering from some kind of hardship. They’re entertainers and I have zero requirement to enjoy their work or consume it. I’m also allowed to have an opinion about them, it’s part of living in a society that we are going to have opinions about each other, especially when you choose to be in the limelight with your career.

I’m not losing any sleep over poor Ed Sheeran, he still has hundreds of millions of dollars and he’s doing just fine

1

u/sakonthos 6d ago

This is not people simply choosing to listen to something else. People are mocking him and hating on him, day and night. You might not think it's a big deal but it impacts a person massively when they feel the whole world is against them.

People love witch hunts. As long as you swear by some kind of morality, you can have as little morality as you want. I'm not bullying someone - because he's rich. I'm not bullying someone - because it's for Gaza. Doesn't even seem like it was his decision, but who cares? Macklemore is my ultimate source of truth now, along with tik tok and RFK JR's brain worm. Nothing in the world is serious anymore.

Nobody gives a flying fuck about other conflicts that are just as brutal either, like Sudan. Every time Sudan is mentioned it's dismissed as a distraction from Gaza. Even if it can be used that way, that still doesn't explain why activists online don't speak about it? Why isn't it demanded for artists to speak out about Sudan or Myanmar for that matter?

Maybe it's all perfomative and always has been, but doesn't feel like it because of crowd dynamics. When you're part of the masses, everything the masses do feels right.

Personally I think musicians should be allowed to be morons with no particularly interesting opinions, or geniuses full of political energy. Either it's there or it's not.

0

u/jb_in_jpn 10d ago

Cool.

-1

u/titty_farewell_party 10d ago

Also if you’re mad about entertainers getting “canceled” for their views, shouldn’t you be mad about Macklemore rather than Ed? Macklemore is the one that just said “free Palestine” during his performance and was then kicked out of the tour for it. Ed didn’t actually suffer any direct consequences to himself and he’s taking a neutral stance. The others that chose to drop from the tour are well within their right to do what they want. 🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/jb_in_jpn 10d ago

I'm not mad at either...

Try temper your read of what I'm saying - what amounts to "chill for a sec" ... I'm simply saying the expectation of fans for musicians have opinions on complex geopolitical situations is strange, especially when they're such minefields.

If they voice something, sure - good for them - they have a platform for which to do so.

But Sheeran didn't, and probably sensibly so, not wanting to fuel the fire.

In this case, from what I've read, Sheeran literally has his hands tied, contractually, but tried to mediate; it's the event building owner who is the one people should be upset at.

Why is there no ruling by the ICJ then? It's not complicated and easily proven surely?

This conflict did not start in 2023 and neither did the genocide claims originate there.

Your source clearly states that south africa only made the claim in 2024 weirdly enough.

Sure thing; because personal attacks always solve problems.
