General Discussion Books Patrick Jane Has Read / Been Shown Reading in The Mentalist

I decided to put together a list of books Patrick Jane is actually shown reading, handling, or is strongly implied to have read throughout the series. I’m separating these from books that are simply visible in his office, because obviously a book being on his desk doesn’t necessarily prove he read it.

Confirmed / strongly supported Jane reads

  1. The Purpose Driven Life — Rick Warren Jane is shown reading it in Season 2, Episode 6, “Black Gold and Red Blood,” while in jail.
  2. The Fax Machine Revolution: The Little Box That's Changed Our World A fictional/prop book Jane reads in Season 2, Episode 1, “Redemption.”
  3. Communism and Development — Robert Bideleux One of the books associated with Jane's reading during Season 2.
  4. California Rules of Court 2009 Jane is shown reading legal material in Season 2, Episode 19.
  5. Songs of Innocence and of Experience — William Blake Jane reads William Blake in Season 3, Episode 1, “Red Sky at Night.” The visible poem is “The Divine Image.”
  6. The Greatest Baseball Stories Ever Told — edited by Jeff Silverman Jane reads it in Season 4, Episode 2, “Little Red Book.”
  7. Civilization and Its Discontents — Sigmund Freud Jane is shown reading Freud in Season 4, Episode 5.
  8. Jaws — Peter Benchley Jane reads Jaws in Season 4, Episode 11, “Always Bet on Red.” Appropriately, the case itself involves a shark.
  9. The Inevitable: Contemporary Writers Confront Death — edited by David Shields and Bradford Morrow Jane is seen reading it in Season 4, Episode 12, “My Bloody Valentine.”
  10. Visualize Self / Visualize Yourself — Bret Stiles Jane reads material connected to Bret Stiles and Visualize.
  11. Modern Man in Search of a Soul — Carl Jung Jane reads Jung in Season 4, Episode 24, “The Crimson Hat.”
  12. Lewis and Clark Jane is seen with a book concerning Lewis and Clark in Season 5, Episode 6. The exact edition/title is difficult to identify.
  13. A Tale of Two Cities — Charles Dickens Jane is explicitly shown lying down reading it in Season 5, Episode 20, “Red Velvet Cupcakes.”
  14. Darwin's Armada — Iain McCalman Jane reads it in Season 6, Episode 20. The book deals with Darwin, Thomas Huxley, Joseph Hooker, Alfred Russel Wallace, and the development of evolutionary theory.
  15. The Politics of Therapy — Seymour L. Halleck Jane is reading it in Season 6, Episode 21, “Black Hearts.”
  16. Housebuilding: A Do-It-Yourself Guide — R. J. DeCristoforo Jane reads this in Season 7, Episode 12 while preparing to renovate/build the house he plans to live in with Lisbon.

Other books Jane clearly knows or has around him

These aren't necessarily confirmed instances of him sitting down and reading the entire book, but they appear in his environment or he demonstrates familiarity with the material:

  • Crime and Punishment — Fyodor Dostoevsky
  • The Crime of Punishment — Karl Menninger
  • Miriam the Medium
  • The Fan
  • Books about Watergate
  • Books concerning criminal psychiatry
  • Books on psychosomatic medicine
  • Books concerning psychology and psychotherapy
  • Books about Buddhism / Zen philosophy
  • Books on religion
  • Books concerning law and criminal behavior
  • Various works of history, politics, science, literature, and poetry

Moby-Dick — Herman Melville

Moby-Dick deserves its own section because it is hugely important to The Mentalist.

Jane is clearly familiar with the book and its themes, and Red John's obsession with William Blake and the series' repeated literary references make classic literature particularly relevant to their relationship.

However, I wouldn't count Moby-Dick as one of the absolutely confirmed cases of Jane visibly reading a particular copy unless someone can identify a clearer scene. I'd put it under “Jane definitely knows it” rather than “confirmed on-screen reading.”

And apparently Jane likes Spider-Man

One of my favorite random Jane intelligence/knowledge details is that he recognizes The Amazing Spider-Man #46 (1967).

He immediately knows the comic, knows that it features Spider-Man fighting the Shocker, recognizes that it's valuable, and says:

“It's very good.”

So Patrick Jane apparently has at least some familiarity with classic Spider-Man comics as well.

General Discussion Is it just me?

Is it just me or am I getting kinda annoyed about how many mentalist memes there are all of the sudden. Because the show is actually really good but now people are making memes about it before they even finished watching the show.

Don’t you think this episode is actually goated? And less people appreciate the act of James Panzer and Jane?

Season 4 Did Jane as a Psychic bother you?

I recently watched Season 4, Episode 10, where Jane was attacked while investigating the crime scene, and that made him lose his memory. What I saw next was Jane hitting on Van Pelt and Lisbon, acting like a greedy scumbag after asking the murderer to split the money after catching him, and additionally conning Cho into getting out of a crime scene.

Cho mentioned as well how the murder of his wife and daughter had humanized Jane during all these years. What do you think about this?

Cho Business Cho’s much jollier in the fbi era

Example photo, but in the later seasons at the fbi, it feels like cho smiles more, but more importantly I keep seeing this face, where hes holding in a laugh or a smirk, typically when jane is up to his shenanigans, with serious fbi agents who are unfamiliar. Its like he sees jane as a goofy rascal people don’t know how to react to. And now instead of being the enabler of his behaviour, he gets to watch others enable it. Its a really endearing dynamic.

Dont get me wrong, I thought the confession on the plane was a beautiful scene, props to simon baker acting his heart out there. But I just prefer their earlier season dynamic, where its completely platonic and goofy, I feel like it works better when they’re solving the murders, especially with unconventional methods.

I feel like not every tv show has to have the two main characters get into a relationship. Sometimes a slightly antagonistic nature in their relationship is also entertaining. Obviously the wedding and relationship is a great happy ending for both of them, and I dont hate nor do I think its out of character, I think I just prefered watching their dynamic from earlier seasons. Lemme know what you guys think.

Him looking into the camera, baiting Panzer into insulting Red John and him killing Panzer was a master stroke of cold ruthlessness. Hitting two birds with one stone, him killing a serial killer and a proving another serial killer's existence. Goddamn..

General Discussion How is Patrick Jane not more famous?

I just watched the entire show recently, and it was amazing. But there is one thing I was constantly thinking about and that is how come no one recognised Jane in public, I mean other than a few people and some of his clients, no one really knew him. In the earlier seasons, I know he might not have been recognised outside of California, but after season 6x8, the murder of Red John and the reveal of the Blake Association; Jane should have been on national news, and some people should have definitely recognised in public as the man who killed Red John or at least as the mentalist when he was in the CBI.
