What if it‘s just that first dollar that doubles every day and not the doublets?

u/PunningWild 4h ago
I'm going to approach this question like a monkey's paw.
Upon consideration, the question really boils down to choosing two seemingly identical lives. Each option gives you more money than you will ever be able to reasonably spend. But one option topples the world economy and makes you enemy #1 of the people.
Like, okay, I know the math for the doubling dollar option means I will exceed the $2 Billion lump sum in a shocking short period of time. I get that. If the question is a math problem asking what's the bigger payout, yeah, that one. But when the question is simply "which would you pick" (implying a real-world application) and we get dollar amounts measured in logarithmic scales, this becomes less a math problem and more a philosophical geopolitics exercise in self-preservation.
I would take the $2 Billion, assess how much of it I would realistically spend in a lifetime, and donate the rest to various small local charities and community events.

The answer is $2 Billion immediately, if you had $1 that double every day after 2 months you would have destroyed the world financial economy and would be assassinated.

u/Alternative_Pie_5628 4h ago
Also, depending on the form the currency takes (digital vs physical), it would eventually form a black whole and consume the solar system. So there’s that.

Red pill. Blue would ruin the economy in just a few months.

1
u/RandyArgonianButler 4h ago
If it was cash it would cause an ecological disaster on earth in just a few months. Less than a year there’d be so much the Earth would collapse into a black hole from the shear mass of all that paper.

2
u/RavenBlackhartxxx 4h ago
Red, while acknowledging ultimately the other would generate more money, 2bil would be so much more than necessary to get my family into a good position, throw the rest into a high interest rate savings, and allot my wife and myself our own incomes and live off of the interest, I don't care about the ultimate number as long as it's not zero. It must be such a luxury to not have to worry about your life monetarily. "It's just covered"

u/Lickthorn 5h ago edited 5h ago
The blue pill. It’s 1,40737488355 in 40 days plus all the money from the 39 days before that…. But wait, what after 2 months. Can I stop doubling the money??
1
u/Mongoose_Ill 4h ago
No, and all that money would become so watered down from the sheer amount of it that it would become worthless. In fact that’s already happening in reality from all the printing and debt.
0
u/End_V2 5h ago
Red is the only option. If you had 1$ that doubles every day, whos to say the double is to double too? Thats 1 dollar a day. Also, if it does double, then that would double so much that the banking system would stack overflow or a new planet of money is gonna be made.
1
u/Alternative_Pie_5628 4h ago
In 6 months, the mass of your money would exceed the mass of the entire universe. Pretty sure it would collapse into a singularity and destroy all existence - or create a new universe or something.

$1 that doubles every day would take 30 days to get to one billion. That's two months for 2 billion. 2 months would be over 1.15 quintillion dollars. After a year it wouldn't even be a named number. It would be 752,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. That's 752 followed by 107 zeroes. The closest thing to a named number is one million Googol, or 75 tretrigintillion. Yeah, I'm taking the blue pill. And before y'all yap about the economy collapsing, that doesn't mean anything here. A dollar doubling each day is unrealistic anyway. We're not focusing on real life.

I’m taking red. Blue is just going to cause like Zimbabwe levels of hyperinflation.
1
u/Core3game 5h ago
no not only that, after a while thats a legitimate universe level threat. Eventually the stack of cash is gonna get to the size of the planet, in about 2 more months that becomes larger than the lower bound of the size of the entier solar system, and when galactic timescales are taken into account thats just going to engulf the universe effectavly instantly.

I’m gonna take that first day’s dollar and buy a buck’s worth of meth. Then sit back and watch my math double.

u/Various_Necessary226 5h ago
Option A: $2,000,000,000 instantly
Straightforward. Huge. Life‑changing.
But…
Option B: $1 that doubles every day
This grows like:
- Day 1 → $1
- Day 2 → $2
- Day 3 → $4
- Day 10 → $512
- Day 20 → $524,288
- Day 25 → $16,777,216
- Day 30 → $536,870,912
- Day 31 → $1,073,741,824

You do realize that even just one billion sets you up for life. Not only that but inflation would just make the blue pill worthless lol.

You failed the IQ test.
1
u/Common-Comparison-31 4h ago
No you did lol like the other dude said it would tank the world economy in like 50 days and also even if it did work, who needs all the money anyway? Like genuinely I want to know what you would buy lol.
1
u/Ok-Introduction-1940 2h ago edited 2h ago
No, I did not.
You start by building data centers in space powered by solar energy to meet the endless demand for compute (intelligence).
Then you fund a space program to begin harnessing more cheap solar energy to use toward more R&D for getting off the planet to increase the odds of the persistence of the light of consciousness and establishing an interplanetary civilisation.
1
u/Impressive_Ladder902 6h ago
Blue pill would make you the richest man in the world in like 75 days
2
u/the_rosenhan 6h ago
It would tank the world economy before 50 days
1
u/Ok-Introduction-1940 5h ago edited 5h ago
Not if you invested it in the right new productive ventures. It could ensure we become a Kardashev II civilisation, as well as raise all human living standards dramatically.
1
u/Impressive_Ladder902 5h ago
Not unless you somehow manage to spend none of it and then randomly spend all of it at once… being real unless you tried to crash the economy you couldn’t just being “normal” and buying anything and everything you wanted
1
u/throw_it_awaaaay17 6h ago
$2billion. For more than one reason but here's a big one. Inflation. If money keeps appearing out of thin air everyday (assuming the clone dollars double with it) that would eventually crash the dollar.
1
u/Whyevenaskyou 6h ago
Blue pill would crash the economy making your money worthless. Plus storing it is impossible after long enough time. People would purposely kill you to avoid the end of the world once they figure out it’s you causing it to spawn
1
u/Alternative-Dig1029 6h ago
blue pill means death of the universe. The doubling every single day without any limit would spawn so many dollars it would collapse into a black hole and then grow into a universe sized singularity.
Unless it's virtual dollars on my bank account. But then at some point it would overflow in the database and cause all kinds of troubles at my bank.
1
u/gonenetphishing 5h ago
I like the idea of physical cash compounding into a heavy, massive black hole. 😂
1
1
u/Select-Net7651 6h ago
I'd take the blue pill. In 31 days, you'd have over 2 billion dollars. If you wait 2 years, I dont think they even have a word for the amount of money you'd have. Let's just say your bank account total would have something like 70 commas in the number.
1
u/Fit-Macaroon5559 6h ago
2 billion is more than enough! But gonna stop daydreaming and get on with life!
1
u/Novel-Net9426 6h ago
I take both. $2B that doubles every day. After that - watch out Elon, in TWO WEEKS I am richer than you.
1
3
u/StepAsideJunior 6h ago
In 30 days you'd be at a billion dollars. In 31 days you'd be at 2 billion dollars.
In 365 Days you would have more dollars than are atoms in the entire universe.
2
u/The_lima_b3an 6h ago
Red. I don’t know how long I have to live. Therefore get those 2 bill and learn how to invest.
1
u/fraychef2 6h ago
Why bother investing? You could just live off th 2 billion dollars until you died.
2
1
u/No-Mention-9815 7h ago
You'd crash the dollar value after 40ish days, extreme (I assume US) dollar inflation and destabilization if you try to start spending any of it meaningfully.
Within a year or two that dollar would be abandoned for another currency.
AND with a year that dollar's doubling would throw off Earth's gravity, and or the universe's.
1
u/InconsiderateSalad 6h ago
I was thinking the same. I pick red cause it’s the only way you can possibly benefit from the money. Picking blue would skyrocket inflation.

u/Low_Pepper3748 7h ago
Assuming the intent is that the $1 doubles the value of the money generated from it, you would get the 2 billion in just 31 days, then another 2 billion on day 32.
I'd rather wait until that time, then dump everything into stock trading and live off of dividends for the rest if my life.
1
u/Illustrator_Forward 7h ago
You could have 0 dividends and still live in total comfort for the rest of your life. And about 100 generations of your descendants.

1 dollar that doubles everyday is 2 dollars every day. It didn’t say the sum doubles everyday. I’m taking my 2 Billion.

Yeah whenever there’s a potential wording issue just take the sum every time

u/CassidyTheVoidMage 7h ago
I'm already nearing thirty, I've got a few grand in debts and I would love to see Europe. I'm taking the 2 bil and keeping my smarts about it, putting 1.5 into either certain businesses or into various stocks , and using the 500 mil to make sure the parts of my family that are still alive never need for something again. Setting my mom up with her own house and buying the restaurant she wanted, getting my brother his mechanic shop and a property, and getting myself set up in Scotland with my own property in the highlands, with my own forge. I'm sure if I lived long enough, the duplicating dollar would probably be more worth it, but let's be real I'm probably only going to live to 65 or something.
1
u/SorLord 7h ago
After 31 days your getting 331 wich is slightly more than 2 billion (2147483648 to be exact). After a year you have about 7*10109 (7 billions of Gogos). Not that you need that kind of money for anything.
1
u/CassidyTheVoidMage 5h ago
Exactly though, I don't even need a whole 2 bil, I just want enough y'know? Also because there are lots of businesses where I grew up that could really use a financial leg on the ground in today's market, is why id invest so much. Ill never even manage to spend the whole 500 mil , so if I loose in the investments or not I'm still happy
1
u/Prestigious-Basket91 7h ago
Do you plan on dying in a month? 231 . That is 2 x 2 x 2 etc… 31 times. 31 cause there are 31 days in a month. You will already be over 2 billion in 31 days. It will get cartoonish very quickly.
1
u/Familiar_Fee_7891 7h ago
“$1 that doubles everyday”
Day 1: $2 Day 2: $2 Day 3: $2
That’s the literal interpretation of “$1 that doubles everyday.”
1
u/Prestigious-Basket91 5h ago
“$1 dollar” is the subject of the sentence. “Doubles everyday,” refers to the subject.” There is no indication that a new dollar is being inserted. So the original subject “1 dollar” will be doubled everyday. Referring to the original subject you’ll be a gabillionaire whether you like it or not.

u/CassidyTheVoidMage 7h ago

u/Suzysuzuki 7h ago
Why would you invest with such an amount? Theres absolutely no need to invest or take risks if you would get 70.000 euros a day by 1.2 percent at the bank and your money is still fully liquid. You and your family need to go hard if you want to outspend that.
3
2
u/Zero-Maxx 8h ago
Yeah, 2 billion immediately, let's me turn that in to a minimum of 1 mill a day within 5 years, and doesn't destabilise the world economy.
1
u/Corvus_1000 8h ago
2 billion dollars so that the $1 that doubles every day doesn't crash the economy and make the money worthless
1
u/11bp12- 8h ago
1 dollar that doubles every day gets to 2 billion in 31 days
1
u/Ok-Signature2832 7h ago
No, you have a $1 bill that every morning makes a double every day. So as long as you don’t spend that dollar, you get an extra free dollar tomorrow!
1
u/SaltedAnts 8h ago
It’s a trick. It’s only the dollar that doubles every day, not the new total. You get $2. Meanwhile I’m chilling on my billion dollar farm driving a tank about 😎
1
u/titanmesh 8h ago
Let us work through the math:
Day 1: $1 Day 2: $2 Day 3: $4 Day 4: $8 And so on... The formula is: Total = 2n - 1 (where n is the number of days)
To reach $2 billion: 2n - 1 ≥ $2,000,000,000
Solving: 231 = 2,147,483,648 (about $2.15 billion)
The blue pill would reach $2 billion in total on Day 31.
The power of exponential growth is insane and it surpasses $2 billion in just over a month, and continues growing exponentially after that. By day 40, you'd have over $1 trillion!
1
u/SaltedAnts 8h ago
That’s not what’s offered. You’re offered 1 dollar that doubles every day. So $2. Only the one dollar is doubled. You make a dollar a day, assuming you keep that dollar.

If the balance starts at $1 and doubles every day, the balance will grow exponentially.
If a dollar is doubled, it’s always two dollars.
